Google Maps Adds Buttons to Report Incidents like Speed Traps and Crashes.

According to Android Police, Google has added speed trap and crash reporting to Maps. This is similar to features found in the Google owned Waze app. Right now it is limited to only navigation mode and not everyone has access to the reporting features.

Take a peek at the Maps UI the next time you're navigating, and you may have a new report button down at the bottom of the screen. Tap that, and you can tell Google you've encountered either a crash or a speed trap (see above). Currently, this only works in navigation mode, but it's just a test.
 
Well it only work if you have a user base, and i never have my phone going when driving.
I might have navigation going on my tablet, but its not googles take on it i am using, cuz the less google have the better all us people in the world are.
O and i use a local APP for speed-traps as those here are mobile and we only have 10 fixed speed cams.
 
I pretty much know the speed traps where I drive. After a while when you start looking for parked police cars you can train your eye to spot them easy.

They more than probably use Waze user data and you would be surprised how many person use Waze. It goes from nerds, youth, older person, uncle, mom etc.... It works good.
Now what data are they harvesting... hummm. Also I wonder if they "only" collect GPS data on opened app or have full access even when phone is in pocket ?

I like Waze in Android Auto, works very well in our big city !
 
This one of the few instances I'm willing to give up some privacy. If it saves me from getting a single ticket, it benefits me more than them. On the other hand though, it's also generating a traceable record of all of my lawbreaking, which could potentially haunt me.
 
Driving with a internet connected GPS is not anything I will ever do; I can never seem to drive the speed limit.

I personally loved the 2008 recession; I was driving 60miles to work one way, all interstate, and some days I wouldn't even SEE another car. (5:30-6AM EST)

I made it to McDonalds in 30 minutes one morning. :)

I still feel sorry for the guy in the pickup truck that tried to follow me up the entrance ramp to I140, lol.

If you go over the 'lane transition" you find yourself 6" off the ground at 90, with nothing but K-rails to stop you. :)

I saw headlights go round and round until I turned the corner, lol.

well if google maps suddenly does exactly what waze did, no big loss? I much prefer using google maps for navigation, but usually run waze in the background to get alerts.

It can collect info other than when you're using it, if you don't turn that "feature" off.
 
I recall in Ontario i think the cops tried to sue the apps that did this and had reported speed traps , but dont think they won!

Quite a few police organizations tried to lean on Waze to not put info out claiming it's harmful to the public... more like harmful to their public "donations"

I don't eat in my cars.

Not a lot of Engineering jobs at McDonalds, but what do I know; there could be.

As long as I can get a Egg McMuffin, hash browns and Orange Juice, I'm good. :)

Dont worry they are busy prepearing other methods of tracking you without even being present. There have been pushes to force all cars to have GPS installed so they can bill you for how much you drive on the roads. Plus that will let them auto ticket you when you exceed the speed limit. Also lot sof states (esp MD) are installing license plate recorders everywhere. Right now the majority of them are vans suspiciously parked near major intersections...I actually got bitched at by the state police for reporting one of the vans to the FBI. Hey it was suspicious looking and right next to some sensitive areas....

Oh and if youre ever in MD avoid Montgomery county. Pretty much speed camera central and same for stop lights. The bumper of my friends car was past the white line so TECHNICALLY he ran the light...the camera tagged him and the judge wouldnt let him off. In Baltimore there are a lot of cameras as well but only in the poor areas. They dont enforce speeding laws in the richer areas.
 
^^ That's the O'Malley legacy lol. Two terms of being Governor, but then the Maryland voters in general are pretty clueless - but especially in blue Montgomery County.

Its funny the Baltimore DC area and Montgomery county are very liberal. The rest of the state is very conservative. Unfortunately the rest of the state doesnt count.

Steak or bacon egg and cheese bagel is the only way to fly.

Also, I'm sure they have engineers somewhere. Maybe outsourced. However, it's a massive operation.
