Google Fiber’s Next Stop: Austin, Texas

Congrats to the folks in Austin ... make Google so happy with the service in Texas they want to put it in the other big cities here :)

Damned hippies! :p j/k

We will be sending telecom teams from Dallas to reroute that cable further north to cover a more true metropolis in this state.

I really wish Google would install Fiber in my area but I'd bet that isn't going to be happening for quite awhile, if ever.

Yet another reason Austin is awesome.
Damn shame I can't live there, it's remind me of an ex of mine all day, every day.
"But wait!" you say, "think of all the high definition, ummmmm, videos you could watch to help you forget!"
Sadly, it doesn't quite work that way, and it pisses me off, because Austin is great.
If only my city could dump our dickbags of politicians, we could be an up and coming Austin.

I'm excited to for the launch! I live just at the edge of town, so I'm not sure I will get it right off the bat. but I'm looking forward to the day I can dump TWC!!!!

Wonder what the rational for Austin is... yeah yeah I know hospital, schools, etc... but it's not like Austin is unique in that aspect. Is it more about local government kickbacks? tax breaks? what?

Also wonder what the cost to Google is in deploying, didn't FIOS cost $20+ billion for it's initial roll out?

I am sure that I will never see it since I live in a rural area.
My only hope is that I am right in the middle of several military bases and they would get it.

Please Google, take my money here in Orlando Florida.... please

Crazy that Google is the only company getting after it in any way, shape or form. ISP's just ignoring fiber and the overwhelming demand for speed.

US Govt. should be laying fiber with the same ferocity with which we built our interstate highway system.

Silly Citizen...that's why you have the free market! If there were demand, it would be built by now.

"More porn, faster porn... Google Fiber"

Come on Google. We know Chicago can easily be purchased. Wet the right beaks and come on in.

Oh good, Austin will have A neighborhood armed with giga speeds. Jus like KC.
I'm in KC and my odds of getting Google inet are less then the chances I have at winning the presidency.

Expand you assholes!!

Dear DogsofJune,

We were going to expand into your neighborhood.
In fact, we were set to expand it to all of KS and MO.
Then you called us a$$holes.
We're taking our fiber and going home.
And we're telling all of your neighbors why.

:D

And magically comcast/time warner cuts the internet cost by $20 and doubled the speed, but only if you are qualified to get google fiber...

The local government is definitely cutting Google some breaks for this project. Also, here are a few small tech companies you may or may not have heard of that have major offices in the Austin metroplex:

AMD
Dell
Intel
ARM
NVIDIA
Apple
Qualcomm
Samsung
Google
Freescale
IBM
HP
National Instruments
Cirrus Logic
Altera
Oracle
Calxeda
VMWare

I'm sure I forgot a few.

Anyways, I say bring it! At the very least, it will bring TWC's prices down!

Haven't heard of any of those companies ... who are they :p

As I suspected. No one of consequence :p

Well like I said, Austin is hardly unique... as to your list of "look at us we are big" list... I live near Silicon Valley (don't consider SF as part of it) I'm pretty sure our list trumps your list simply because many of the companies you listed have their HQ over here, not just a "major office" (Dell being an exception that pops out at me... but then again they're not really known for innovation they let others do stuff and they put it all together in a black box;)).

California does have lots more rules on business than Texas and as others noted Google probably received some nice incentives to come to Austin ... If the Silicon Valley area wants Google Fiber they will need to pony up some bucks and incentives ;)

Because we can so afford to do that right now.

Right! Who the hell wants to do business in California these days?

I saw that article yesterday and sent it to a couple friends who live in Austin. Now if only Google can go south of Kansas City (their 1st spot) and north of Austin, I'd be happy ... specifically, the D/FW area.
