Dear residents of Austin, Texas....I hate you. Not really, but I sure am jealous.

Crazy that Google is the only company getting after it in any way, shape or form. ISP's just ignoring fiber and the overwhelming demand for speed.
US Govt. should be laying fiber with the same ferocity with which we built our interstate highway system.
didn't FIOS cost $20+ billion for it's initial roll out?
Silly Citizen...that's why you have the free market! If there were demand, it would be built by now.

Silly lib, there is no free market, only government granted monopolies/dualopolies.
Please Google, take my money here in Orlando Florida.... please
Oh good, Austin will have A neighborhood armed with giga speeds. Jus like KC.
I'm in KC and my odds of getting Google inet are less then the chances I have at winning the presidency.
Expand you assholes!!

I was going to post exactly this. Thanks.
Dammit!Dear DogsofJune,
We were going to expand into your neighborhood.
In fact, we were set to expand it to all of KS and MO.
Then you called us a$$holes.
We're taking our fiber and going home.
And we're telling all of your neighbors why.
The local government is definitely cutting Google some breaks for this project. Also, here are a few small tech companies you may or may not have heard of that have major offices in the Austin metroplex:Wonder what the rational for Austin is... yeah yeah I know hospital, schools, etc... but it's not like Austin is unique in that aspect. Is it more about local government kickbacks? tax breaks? what?
Also wonder what the cost to Google is in deploying, didn't FIOS cost $20+ billion for it's initial roll out?

AMD
Dell
Intel
ARM
NVIDIA
Apple
Qualcomm
Samsung
Freescale
IBM
HP
National Instruments
Cirrus Logic
Altera
Oracle
Calxeda
VMWare
I'm sure I forgot a few.
Anyways, I say bring it! At the very least, it will bring TWC's prices down!

As I suspected. No one of consequenceHaven't heard of any of those companies ... who are they
Well like I said, Austin is hardly unique... as to your list of "look at us we are big" list... I live near Silicon Valley (don't consider SF as part of it) I'm pretty sure our list trumps your list simply because many of the companies you listed have their HQ over here, not just a "major office" (Dell being an exception that pops out at me... but then again they're not really known for innovation they let others do stuff and they put it all together in a black box). Also, here are a few small tech companies you may or may not have heard of that have major offices in the Austin metroplex:

Because we can so afford to do that right now.Crazy that Google is the only company getting after it in any way, shape or form. ISP's just ignoring fiber and the overwhelming demand for speed.

California does have lots more rules on business than Texas and as others noted Google probably received some nice incentives to come to Austin ... If the Silicon Valley area wants Google Fiber they will need to pony up some bucks and incentives
