Google Fiber Announcement Live Stream

Does this seem kinda creepy to anyone else?

Because it's Google? In a way, yes. The NSA is already tapped into virtually every ISP, so there's no big difference there (just the same lack of sufficient outrage), but Google as an ISP would be more likely to store a ton more data on your traffic for their own advertising/stalking purposes than the telecom monopolies do today.

Still, if Google had the drive and municipal permission to enter the marketplace everywhere (not just KC), that level of bandwidth competition could scare the cable/telco companies into improving their services across the board. I'm not sure how feasible that is though: The whole reason the telecom monopolies get away with what they do is because they have municipal monopoly contracts, and it's extremely difficult for non-wireless (and increasingly, wireless) competitors to even get governmental permission to actually compete in the same locality.

...then again, a fiber service would probably be treated as a different monopoly than cable and phone lines by municipalities.

it seems like the speed is capped by the network box gigabit ports. maybe someone will swap them with 10gbit ports and have even faster speeds!

My comments are mostly jumbled, seperate thoughts:

Anyone notice that the remote is the same shape and possible size and the layout is very similar to AT&T's uverse remote? Whcih is pretty much a Media center 2 remote.

I know this isn't Media Room but it looks very similar in a few regards.

I wonder who own's makes the remote, I have seen many things now use that shape and layout.

Man I wish I had this! $120 for the total package? Heck yes!

Next stop, Google wireless.

To all who think differently, google is probably already making money off this. They can now have first line access to everything you do on the internet, everything you watch on TV or via their device / connection. That kind of infomation has got to be worth something. Oh yeah don't forget the who G-integration thing, this will drive you to want more google products.

Finaly thought: Google, they are the new open minopoly.

I live 2 hours north of KC and I have fiber in an small town and I am paying $119.95/month for 15mbps down / 3 up. So same amount for a lot more is a great deal to me. Stoked about the Nexus 7 and 1TB drive plus having TV again.

We have been planing for a year to move to KC in January once lease is up. Both work from home, so we are free to move anywhere. So seeing the announcement had made us even more excited. But were going to wait to see what fiberhood gets it first, to narrow our rent location searches. Can't wait!!!

Happy to be living in the KC area right now. Between this and MicroCenter, I'm a happy geek.

I wonder how many people who refuse to use GMail or Google+ or have an account at Google are going to get Google Fiber :D

Man honestlly I'd probably drop my 18 Meg Uverse line for the free 5 Meg line. I just don't use that much bandwidth anymore.

Everyone can be bought. Given the right incentive, principles fly right out the window.

Then again, I suspect some people would still refuse to let Google in on the fact that they watch quite a lot of Matlock or that their interest searches include the keywords "cucumber lemonade" or "best drill bits", even when offered cheap gigabit internet.

PRIVACY.

Some people might have outlook express, thunderbird, or hell any number of other free email accounts and don't need another one.

Some people might have facebook, or don't care about social networking.

Does anyone else just see a radioactive rabbit running around the screen?

I'm surprised that tech geeks are saying this is meaningless since it 'isn't in their city.' The fact that Google planned this and followed through is big. At the very least it is sending a strong message to the existing providers - and that message makes things better for all of us.

Thank you Google.

I have broadband envy and am not ashamed to admit it...
Oh! How I long for the days when I will be able to get my giga-pr0n on!

With Comcast having a Monopoly in New Mexico, and the fact we're still the 3rd poorest state in the nation, I highly doubt we'll see this type of service for another 6 years. The demand is here, just not the financial incentives....

Edit from my above post: I shoulda waited 2 more minutes because I just got to the part where they mention the third package: free 5mb up/1mb down for 7 years, minus the 300 installation cost though. That solves about 62% of the states problem.

Suddenly the 150/65 from FIOS in my area seems woefully inadequate... welp.

I hope it come to new York. I keep hearing people fear lobbyist will not allow it. If so, I hope Google can do something to take these monopolies down in the area.

So for $120 you'll get:

• Up to one gigabit upload & download speed
• Full channel TV lineup
• 2 year contract
• No data caps
• Nexus 7 tablet
• TV Box
• Storage Box
• Network Box
• 1TB Google Drive
• $300 waived construction fee

What an outrage, HOW COULD THEY DO THIS? With Comcast that would be at least $1000+ per month. Sue Google they, unfair competition is what this is called!

I wouldn't be surprised if AT&T and all the others quickly got their lobbyretards working hard to stop google from expanding at all with this.

WE need something that can cover a large portio nof the US.

Instead of only lvery very very tiny few select cities and meanwhile the majority of US residents can't get it now or ever thanks to the monopolies.

Actually what we need is for MAJOR CITIES to get covered first, no offense to those who live in the rural areas, but fuck them. Since a majority of US residents live in said cities, that's where everything should initially focus.

While that's awesome, in some ways, who cares? Unless you live in Kansas City, you're never going to see it. I mean, I could get cheap gas if I lived in Saudi Arabia, but I don't, so it means nothing to me.

I live a couple blocks away from the KC Google Fiber Space building that just opened, so it matters to me. :)

$120 for Gigabit Internet (no CAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), true 1080p HD channels, Nexus 7, DVR that's beats the shitt out of everything else out there, CANNOT be beat....!!!! I live in KCMO and I'm jumping on this as soon as it's in my neighborhood..!!!!

I'm with you!

And since this isn't available to 99.999% of hardforum users, no shits were given that day.

Lots of KC people on [H].

Me too!

Glad somebody sees the bigger picture. :)

Dear Google,

Please bring this to the Northern Virginia area, so I can happily throw my money at you. Thanks.
