Google Ends Self-Censorship, Defies China Government

Didn't google jumped the ship? i guess is too big of a pie to leave behind so sad for google trying to portray this image of sad money hungry bastards in a desperate move to raise their public ratings.

They did. Hong Kong is still quite free as part of their take-over agreement with Britain in the year 2000. About all China can do is block every attempt Google makes to get around censor or block the rest of China from accessing google.com.hk

Google, is the company I grown to like a lot. Thats right up there with Charmin Quilted toilet paper company.

They will sacrifice their business there. Nothin more, nothing less. You don't like the rules, you don't have to play.

Sacrifice what business? Google is making the same amount of dough regardless; they are only redirecting users to .hk (which is not blocked), and the chinese government is instead filtering searches. Chinese users can still use google. Win-Win.

so they enjoy their censorship

Censorship has not been eliminated because of the move to HK. I do not know why you think that is the case. Some sites that were inaccessible are now fine and from what my friend who lives in China tells me, there are no longer links that will 404 you and prevent you from searching for 5-10 minutes....but I was not entirely sure what he meant by that last bit when we spoke of this last night.

When we were talking about this whole thing it did not sound like a big deal to him. I understand he obviously does not represent 1.3 billion Chinese but keep in mind what they typically censor has little impact on most folks. They censor certain searches like Tienanmen or Falun Gong and they typically try to block any form of social gathering (loose term) they can not control (youtube, facebook blogs etc). They do filter some porn but it's hardly a situation where you cant find a titty behind the firewall.

Anyway, yeah...Baidu is just fine for most folks apparently. They have held the majority of the market and I do not expect that to change anytime soon. It may even be a better search engine /shrug

You obviously never used the internet in china, another arrogant yet uninformed comment. A lot of stuff they censor is petty crap that i personally don't care. Last summer i was there and didn't have to change my browsing habits.

You are very wrong if you think china is like north korea. However google is not going to win the china market because they don't seem to get any more market due to the new move.

I use google mostly, just because i am used to that engine but i wouldn't mind change. Obviously i don't care if google leaves china because it won't be a big loss.

so they enjoy their censorship

Don't be a fucking tool.

They don't enjoy their censorship, obviously -- most of them have no idea what's going on. The government spins it as protection from corrupting influences, and the people, not trained to think critically or be suspicious of authorities as we are in the west, generally eat it up. Have a friend who's come over from China? He'll confirm what I'm saying.

As an example, check out this or this. These are from the state-controlled China Daily newspaper. This is the one in English. I'm told the Chinese-language dailies are worse.

Don't give me that shit because i think there are other countries far worse doing the censoring shit. No boobs on TV, no Fuck word over public broadcast and tons of shit that is happening currently. I should be free to decide what is best for me.

Democracy in the US? oh really how many people do really go to vote and exercise their rights? Not that i complain but is just pretty cynical when people that have their freedom never exercise their rights then point fingers when things go bad.

This same people still have the nerve to trash talk other government policies while the majority don't even go to vote for your local elections when the city has to approve a tax increase for some kind of big project then bitch when they get their annual bill for their assessed taxes "oh shit my tax is so fucking expensive".

I'll give you an example, a city in OK, Edmond the major wanted to approve a new city complex and only 25 people went to vote out of nearly 80k people.

Yes, biased news and stories with an overtly political angle never happen outside of China and certainly not in the US right?

Right?.....

BTW...what in those articles was incorrect exactly? You and I may disagree on their desire for censorship but outside of opinion can you tell me what is wrong with the articles?

@Fafeifa: If you can't figure out the difference between the government stopping you from finding out about riots and disasters happening around your country or criticizing its rule and the government stopping you from using obscene language on publicly-owned television stations, I'm not sure that we can have a conversation.

@spinelli: There are no lies in the articles, if that's what you mean. But that's the crudest form of propaganda. The way that information is presented is at least as significant, and probably much more. The suggestion that the government can and should control access to all information (not, as the article suggests, mainly pornography, but rather information about the modern history of China, its governmental leaders and policies, and the events that occur within its borders) is plenty dangerous enough, whether or not there are any lies. And surely you can see the difference between CNN/Fox (take your pick) and something like that?

Well, you presented those articles as if there was something wrong with them yet there was nothing in content or tone that was inaccurate or over the top. If you think those two articles were heavy on propaganda, I honestly would suggest you watch more US news and maybe reality will dawn on you some day. Yes, I can see a diff between the tone and language between the two articles you linked and what I typically find on CNN or Fox but the differences I see do not help your argument. CNN and Fox serve up news as a footnote, their core business is entertainment. More accurately, their core business is selling advertising, and it's clear.
