In an effort to address criticism that it profits from bootleg content, YouTube released a statement today that outlines its anti-piracy efforts. The statement seems a bit self serving but, then again, it's not like anyone expected anything different from YouTube.

Providing new revenue streams for media industries and content owners: Content ID has also created a robust new revenue stream for the content industry. YouTube has paid out over $2 billion to rightsholders who have monetized their content through Content ID since it first launched. In fact, today well over 90% of all Content ID claims across the platform result in monetization. The music industry chooses to monetize more than 95% of their claims, opting to leave the content up on the platform - half of the music industry's YouTube revenue comes from fan content claimed via Content ID. Thanks to Content ID, YouTube is also the only platform that gives partners an automated way to directly monetize background/incidental use and covers.

Too bad the system is hella broken and content makers on YouTube can easily end up with ads on videos they want to be ad free and free to their viewers all because of a clip that falls under fair use.

And that takedown claims are entirely stacked in the claimers favor. You don't even have to have a legitimate claim but you can fuck with a persons channel and get their video removed for the time it takes YouTube to investigate the claim and the channel owner has no real recourse.

I do however enjoy the Jim Sterling pioneered copyright deadlock. Use multiple instances of video and music clips from different rights holders and as they all claim different things in a single video it can end up with no monetization and none of them get money off of someone else's created content and FAIR USE.
