I have been checking this site every single day for 18 years, and it never even occurred to me to give it money directly ( even though it is one of my favorite things ever ), fuck , I guess the internet does make me stupid .

But , for those of you that might have the impetus; when you have or find interesting tech /science news tidbits drag and tag them to this forum like mini-articles, that way we kind of crowd source a sort of second life hardocp experience...

Congrats on the new job at Intel.

This officially closes all the hardware chapters that were part of my young adult life. Now I really have no idea where to go and trust for any hardware reviews. Like many posts here, HOCP was the last review site that I can trust. I just read up on the reviews here and I can easily make informed purchasing decisions for my hardware. It will just be blind purchases going forward.

RIP Tom's Hardware, Anandtech, Voodoo Extreme, PCPerspective and HardOCP. They were the kings during its heyday. It is truly over for the old guard.

gee its been a long time since i been in this suit. doesnt fit properly anymore and my neck itches...

    oh well.

Might be a bit far to come from Australia for th Storage Locker meet lol tho i would love to be there, in spirit at least.

long time reader and forum lurker (hence why my forum acct has been so moribund) - and i think i even tipped in a couple of news tips early on in the piece. i also enjoyed the wide ranging discourse on the front page - hardware reviews mixed with ROBOTS ARE GONNA KILL US ALL! (ahem... eventually). Space news and launches, consumer heads up about major hackings like the TJmaxx and equifax fuckups - lets be brutally honest here; thats what they were. convention news of all the latest and greatest hardware heading our way. i can get bits and pieces of that information elsewhere but nowhere that had that distinct and easily digested blend. (not to mention i also am a fan of the colour scheme).

dont remember when i started reading but i distinctly remember Tbird pencil trick stories (and advice to get a shim, which i did). Cr0bars matrix spoof may have been linked here as well. had a forum account before the 2000s crash so it was at least that far back. my, but time flies when you are having fun....

All the best to you for the future Kyle. one little thing for your new role, dont forget to use the cattleprod on them over the spectre and other mitigations - there wont be much for enthusiasts to enthuse over if future chips are compromised before they even go out the door. noone wants to be patched downward in performance again.

now... where the hells do i find my tech news now?

Everyone has to grow up and get a real job at some point ;D

[H] is probably the last of the OG tech sites that I visited with any regularity, so it will be missed.

It will be interesting to see if there is any noticeable drop in enthusiast PC builds/sales now that [H] will no longer be around to give reviews of new hardware. I truly believe [H] was that influential.

Have visited HardOCP for as long as I can remember, I think even since before the turn of the century. Really sad to see you leave. You and your site have contributed to hardware enthusiasts in spades, but if it is better for you than all the best !

ps: Thank you for rocking the boat with GPP and hopefully for you Intel isn't going down that road.....

First EOCF, then Xtreme Systems now HardOCP. For me that was the triple back in the day. I understand but still sucks. Makes me feel rather old now.

The long and the short of it is this. HardOCP and its branding and trademarks are my property and I do not want to lose control of those in any way. Maybe that is selfish, but I look at HardOCP as my legacy in this industry, and I do not want others controlling it.

That said, I have talked to all our editors about moving forward in the industry with current or existing tech websites, and they have my full support in that. I have even let them know, that if they want to take our formats or procedures and use those, they have my blessing. Many of the editors still have all the equipment to work in industry. I have asked for none of that back.

Kyle, do you have any screen shots of the "very first" [H]ocp page that ever went up? /please post one if so

Things have come a long way since then. Everything in the industry has been through such sweeping changes, including all the enthusiast sites.

Seems like it was just yesterday that Mike Chambers from nV News passed away. It's crazy, but as you get older (if you live long enough) you get to see everything around you change some day, people, places, things. You were one of few remaining "old timers" (not talking about age).

Everything is but a moment in time, the bands we listen to, the celebrities and sports figures we admire, our own lives, and I guess [H]ocp too. Never really though I'd live long enough to see [H]ocp cease to exist on a daily basis, thought I'd probably be the one who kicked the bucket first. I guess that's just life, they say the only constant in life is change.

Good luck on the next chapter and thanks for 22 years of the best hardware site on the planet.

/Be sure and sends us pics from Intel's Area 51. :blackalien:

    This is the earliest from Archive.org August 15, 2000 - https://web.archive.org/web/20000815053607/http://www.hardocp.com/
The site started before that, though. There should be more way before that, bBefore Steve came on. I remember when he first showed up, too. His dual Celeron 550 cooled with gutter pieces.

No offence, but I think this is overstating [H]'s influence a wee bit :D People who were going to buy enthusiast components will still do so once [H] shuts down - I doubt anyone went out and bought stuff just because [H] existed, although I certainly believe that for many, what they bought was influenced by [H]'s reviews.

In short, reviews (especially critical ones) don't drive up how much gets bought, they just help to determine exactly what gets bought.

I would beg to differ. You would not believe how many messages I have gotten these last couple of weeks stating that HardOCP was exactly what motivated them into building and buying their own equipment.

Just wanted to chime in to say that personally I've made *less* purchases thanks to [H]'s suggestions and reviews because there's a lot of deceitful products that aren't what they are until a reality performance test is run on them.

Oh and the HardOCP brand - Kyle it's def yours and it's understandable. Also consider tho, that your homepage has become hundreds (thousands?) of others' homepage as well. And that the site ranks really high in tech news and visitors. I get that you wouldn't want to sell out, I'm just pointing out that there is money and opportunity for someone to genuinely continue something similar to the steady stream of visitors. If I were one of the forum admin guys, I'd make an external news page (hardforum.com/news for example) that looks like HardOCP's news stream. I'm sure it's easy to take the threads from the news board and output it in that format on a "new homepage" for us all. And also, keep the ads on there for a few pennies here and there, I don't mind, most/many don't mind. (apart from patreon)

It's not just sales it the type of sale. [H] did reviews based on facts and that's pretty much it. How many sites have a review but they are paid sponsors directly or indirectly?
Bias sucks and people believing that product to be good is just wrong. Just like the NDA. How many years did Kyle say he had to sign a simple one, then GPP, and now it's a huge book.
Getting those kind of reviews are going to be [H]ard. :)

[H] HAS ALWAYS MOTIVATED MY BUYING OF PC PARTS ..since the site always gave honest reviews ..and showed what you could expect in a real world scenario (bought several vid cards and CPU's as well as motherboards based on [H]ard reviews ..even if i hadda save a lil longer to spend more ) it may show me as a member since 2015 .. but i have been reading the site for many years before that

again thanks for your many years of [H]ard work Kyle ..of making one of the best tech sites on the net .

I'm thinking like XXX porn = hard (core) porn... so xxxocp.com would be a good "new" site.

Lol.. one of the links is to SA.. I used to love that site as well... the glory days of the internet before it became so modded.

Definitely see where Kyle is coming from though regarding his 'baby'. Most of the other sites that sold went to garbage. I used to love voodooextreme, sharkyextreme, and thresh's firingsquad.. all turned to garbage.

Anyways, fearing the day we hear from Kyle preaching on about Intel graphics :p

If Intel graphics are anything like the W-3175X, i look forward to it.

Let us face it: the W-3175X is the only thing worth the Overclocking efforts of an enthusiast today.

Precision Boost 2 is the one button perfect CPU OC.

AMD and NVIDIA bin their cards to death and we are left with 5% OC headroom, that kills the card months later.

Now Intel sells a CPU that requires a 360mm radiator to run at stock.

Can you imagine a better company for Kyle to work? :geek:

I just want to say, Thank you Kyle and crew! I own a small, local, IT company, and have visited HardOCP daily for 17+ years. I enjoyed the no-nonsense, honest, reviews and important news updates. I completely understand the career move, I'd do the same thing! I will miss HardOCP though, it's like my old school binky that I just don't want to give up! Best of luck to you in the next phase of your life Kyle! Look, there HardOCP is, and has been, on my Firefox Bookmark toolbar for over 17 years, back when overclocking Athlon XP CPUs was a thing. Damn, we're all getting old!
