Good Headset?

Do you want a good headset, or a gaming headset. If you want a good headset, try headfi.org to find a good headset, then buy an AntLion Modmic for it.

I've got a Sennheiser HD600 and love it.
 
Interested in this myself, OP, as I've been looking for a while but can't seem to find anything all that special out there. Seems the ones marketed towards gaming are all pretty similar, with some boasting good audio quality but usually trading that for comfort or other features.

I was leaning towards one of Sennheiser's headsets even though I'm not a fan of their high end headphones per se (they make great sounding headphones, I just usually can't stand how they look or feel tbh). Read plenty of good reviews for all their models, just not sure which one to get yet:

Do yourself a favor and get some good headphones, and then either a desktop mic or a clip-on mic. I've been with this setup for over ten years after being annoyed at headsets breaking every few to several months. Spend the money on great sound IMO, then a $10-15 mic. FWIW, I use a cheap Logitech mic and Audio-technica ATH-M40fs.

personally i've settled on a pair of CALs and the Z's beamforming mic, would really like to try out soundmagic HP100 sometime soon, the ear cup design is 100% compatible with the fresh velour pads of my dead DT770s :(

bought a pair of AKG K601s back in '09 when i saw spaceman's headhphone guide, they're really accurate when it comes to sound positioning, i got called a "wallhacker" so many times while using them lol, too bad they need an amp and/or a beefy headphone output like ZxR / X7

I'm using the Corsair H2100 and it sounds great and has a pretty good mic on it. Due to children, I often game with the left ear cup off and behind my ear (so I can hear my kids in case of trouble) and the mike picks up fine even in that position. I also love I can pause a game or movie and walk across the house and still have audio without having to worry about cords and such.
 
I like my Razer Carcharias Gaming Headset that I got off Woot a few years ago for $30. Love the felt earmuffs.
 
BTW, keep in mind that if you game for long sessions, and plan to use your headphones for that, you will want a light headset. A heavy headset will give you a headache.

^ what he pointed out doesn't seem very obvious to a lot of people picking based on looks or hype. Until they decide to try gaming all day instead of their usual casual shit...
 
Go Wireless and never look back! Wired Headsets only last so long till you trip or run over your cord.
 
I've been using the sennheiser PC360s for the last several years and have been very satisfied. I'm not hard on my gear but for 100% of my pc gaming i use the headset (usually just as headphones) and it has held up just fine. Performance and comfort have been great the mic boom is a little more bulky than I would prefer however I really like the swing up to mute function it both gets it out of the way when you don't need to use a mic and also quick and easy if you have to sneeze or something.

Does not seem like it is directly listed on the sennheiser website but you can still get to it through the 363D link. Alternatively it kooks like the g4me one headset is the equivalent updated model.

I got this headset based on the recommendation from head-fi for having good positional audio/soundstage and good acoustics. I use it with a Xonar U3 sound card in Dolby headphone mode.
 
Just in case OP never responds back with a price point, anyone know what THE BEST headset is for gaming (money no object)?

Talking about headsets specifically, not headphones + modmic or standalone microphone.

Razer's 7.1 with individual drivers and connectors (requires a proper sound card though), astro, Sennheiser gamezero, steelseries siberia elite, klipsch kg300.

But which depends on what you really want. The Razer assumes you want surround and are pushing a high end sound card with the connectors. Astro comes with it's own mixamp and is an odd beast. The other three are just generic headsets but some of the best out there.

But you'd still be better off just buying headphones and tossing on a mic.
 
Would audible microphone quality (in game while talking to other players, not in a video blog on Youtube) be noticeably better getting a real microphone like a Blue Yeti versus a high-end gaming headset?

And thanks, had been looking at the Sennheiser Game Zero but hadn't considered the others yet! Will start reading up and comparing.

If I had different headphones I'd be all over a modmic, but the thought of putting 3M adhesive on mine makes me go

The tiamat is the razer 7.1 to look at, not the other.

Anyways yes, the mics on headsets are about as good to true mics as the sound on headsets is to a real set of headphones.

Now, if price is really no damn object and you just want it to be a "headset" you might want to look into broacasting pro gear.

I'm not trying to talk you into going that route, but I took it off my old headphones (JVC) and it came off without problem.

Sennheiser, if you can afford the brand, you won't be disappointed
 
I've had all of them and currently have an Astro A50, new A40 mix amp pro, and. Logitech 930. The mic on the A40 sucks. The range on the A50 sucks and it interferes with my wifi router. The 930 sounds worse than the Astros but overall is the easiest to use and has the best soundin microphone. It's a toss up really.....
 
HyperX Cloud Gaming Headset

Sounds dumb but amazingly well done and cheap gaming headphones. They use real leather and its very comfortable. The sound is very decent for the price. Its not going to please audiophiles but its fantastic for the average Joe.

Right now its $79.99 on Amazon. Also it works on PC and Next Gen consoles. So that's a big plus.
 
Hyperx Cloud headset also benefit a good deal from a good sound card.

Closed headset makes for VERY deep base, great 53mm drivers for the money.

And hey! No cheap plastic headband is always a plus!

I absolutely love my ATH-A900's; I normally use them with a clip-on mic for gaming. Having the mic built in would be very nice to have, but I can't really say the price difference is justified.

Great closed headset. I don't hear the fans on my projectors or video cards.
