Good free backup options? Need advice

Hi - I'm looking for recommendations and advice for backup software. I used to use Ghost and Drive Image from bootable CD to USB drive for decades, but I'm not sure those are going to work anymore. I actually bought Drive Image, didn't receive the rebate, then lost the media and I'm all pissy about that so free/open source is my direction.

My wish list:
  1. to back up windows 10 and linux (mainly centos) machines
  2. in-OS backup and/or bootable backup
  3. incremental backups
  4. some kind of background automatic backup
  5. good control over what's backed up (drive / folder selection or exclusion)
  6. backup to USB drive or SMB/SAMBA file share
  7. encryption to prevent machines from accessing other machines' backups
  8. compression
  9. trustworthy (eg, doesn't call home or install other stuff)
  10. browseable backups, in case I need to access files
Any help / insights / warnings / rants / anecdotes would be appreciated. Thanks.

This seems to be specific to virtual machines. Also, it's only a free trial, then it looks like they want money.

There are multiple version of Veeam, backup & replication is the "server/virtualized environment" oriented one. For end user's need (like yours), this is the one:

Look into Macrium Reflect. Though I think the free version does not have a few items you want.
