Any recommendation for a book on basic networking principles? I know how to do general router configurations (port forward, wifi config, etc) but I'm lost with anything much past that. Should I start with a N+ book?

Check out what your library has in eBook form. There are also books in the Dummies series that are decent to start. Also, the Ubuntu documentation isn't that bad and neither is Wikipedia, tech net, and, msdn sites.

I would also suggest to check out a CCNA video course from CBT Nuggets. The first part, ICND1, explains a lot of concepts of TCP/IP. And is presented in very easy to learn way. Plus, you might as well pick up CCENT certification if you decide to take the ICND1 test.

After that, Network+ books will show you the rest.

Just do the ICND1/ccent, its the n+ plus some cisco stuff. It teaches the very basics very well and is much more respected by anyone if its on your resume.

The CBT nugget videos are good but don't forget to read the books too.
