We've not been expecting you, Mr. Bond.
Exciting news for veteran gamers this week: Call of Duty publishers Activision are rumoured to be developing a remake of the Nintendo 64 classic Goldeneye for Wii and DS, if a reportedly leaked gamer survey from the company is to be believed.

Rumours vary, but a common claim online is that Bond will be played in this latest installment by Daniel Craig, rather than the original Goldeneye's Pierce Brosnan. Alongside the Activision document, Destructoid reports a handful of images for the game have also been leaked, including box art and - brace yourself - a golden machine pistol Wii accessory.

Goldeneye on the N64 was a massive hit when it was released in 1997, two years after the Brosnan film of the same name, and was praised for its mix of stealth, action and four-way splitscreen multiplayer battles. Source

Reports suggest that the UK-based Eurocom and the US-based n-Space are developing the game for Nintendo Wii and DS. The game will not be produced for the PS3 or Xbox 360. Source

Everyones dream is coming true;)

Lets hope its better than the EA developer Goldeneye game. Rogue Agent or something. I wouldn't mind a straight remake of the 64 version. Well, ok not a straight remake. I'd like them to uncrapify the level design of some of the levels and make the shooting actually good. But keep the MP as is only add the ability to play it online. I'd love to see the old cheat codes from the original game come back too. Those were awesome. I'd also like to see the AK-47 still look like a pencil gun. I loved the look of that gun.

Remake of a 480i game on 480p ... no thanks. I want to play this about as much as I want to watch the Karate Kid reboot.

You know I was trying to forget that that movie was even being made. Thank you so much for reminding me. Ugh.

If you picked up a Wii or DS for Crysis-killer visuals you may not be the sharpest pencil in the box. ;)

pointless, I sure has hell don't want to play it now, either the original or a new one. Most kids today don't even know wtf the game is let alone the movie.

I played the hell out of that back in the day, but, they really need to come up with new ideas here.

And it's on the wii...

Nintendo has the rights most likely on the game itself while Activision has the rights on bond.

There's nothing wrong with making a remake. If it's good and has good reviews then i'd like to try it.

At this point the only rights Nintendo has these days likely relate solely to the 64 version. A total remake with a different name (or possibly even the same name) could easily fall out of their jurisdiction. Kind of like how Microsoft owns any and all publishing rights related to Ninja Gaiden 2, but by making enough changes to the game to call it a remake and adding "Sigma" to the title Tecmo is able to release the game on the PS3.

It would be cool if they don't use the Wii mote. 4 people pointing at a screens to aim is going to make for pis poor multiplayer.

3d on DS is a joke and shouldn't be done.

amazing :) I hope they do a good job on it if this is true.

I also hope they make an optional contol scheme (where you can use the glassic or gamecube controllers).

I have been playing the PSX version on my PSP for around two years now. The original Tony Hawk Pro Skater is on there too. The N64 emulator never really panned out. That makes it the only legacy emulator the PSP can't run. That makes me a sad panda.:(

about a year ago there was an interview that confirmed no goldeneye remake was going to the ps3 or 360 as a result of nintendo still being involved with the licensing. this information was released shortly after the hd pics were relelase of an alleged 360 version.

You mean Kung Fu Kid? OH Wait..that's right, that title would make more sense at least.

and yea 480i to 480p. Come on! Sucks that Rare apparently doesn't have any rights to it anymore. Maybe they change the name of the title or something.

And why is Daniel Craig's Bond in Golden Eye? not that I dont' like him, just saying, wrong Bond!

Edit: Actually isn't N64 actually lower than 480i?

from wikipedia

The RDP is the machine's rasterizer and performs the bulk of actual image creation before output to the display. The Nintendo 64 has a maximum color depth of 16.8 million colors[29] (32,768 on-screen) and can display resolutions of 256 × 224, 320 × 240 and 640 × 480 pixels.

Due to how intensive 007 was at the time, I doubt that it was actually rendered at 640x480 but you never know.

I can't wait for this game. If it allows you to use a standard controller (no wiimote) then this will be a day one buy for me :) I LOVED the original... such an awesome game.

It was so popular because it brought new elements of addictive game-play, this will bring none. Though, I'm it will still be quite fun!

The E3 trailer was kind of off-putting. I like Danial Craig as Bond, but not in Goldeneye. It just seems so wrong with him being part of a piece of Bond so totally different than the versions he does. His voice just doesn't click for me at all in the footage.

Blegh, Daniel Craig :( Golden Eye without Pierce Brosnan isn't worth it... I honestly can't stand the current Bond actor, he gives me the creeps, like he should be the bad guy instead.

If I were Brosnan, I would take a big dump in a box and mail it to Nintendo.

Needless to say, I would have bought game if it simply had new graphics, engine, and gameplay. They made a virtually new story and entirely new game and exploit the market by giving it a respected name.

it's a new story line? From the clips I've seen, it looks essentially the same (with a few exceptions). I'm willing to bet that they couldn't use pierce because of stupid copyright/license agreements and all that crap.

ether way, it looks pretty good :) I recognized the facility map, the dam and the bunker. Oh hell yeah

It looks pretty much the same to me. They showed the dam, the streets of st.petersburg, facility...all of the classic goldeneye settings. I think it should be pretty good, if this has motion plus support I may finally splurge on a black wii for this and super mario galaxy 2.

From IGN:

"Now, you might feel a little robbed that Daniel Craig is taking over for Pierce Brosnan, and the game's scenario has been almost completely rewritten. According to Activision, GoldenEye 007 is a reimagining of the GoldenEye story, just as Casino Royale shook things up with a much more gritty version of the James Bond character. GoldenEye still retains the basics of GoldenEye's story, but retells it in a way that makes sense with Daniel Craig's interpretation of James Bond."

Not an entirely new story, but very different sounding. They also hinted that the Dam was one of a very few throwbacks to the old game...

Now I'm even less interested.

Damn.

It definitely wasn't 640x480. Games off the top of my head that I know are rendered at 640x480 were Turok 2 and 3, Star Wars Racer, Battle for Naboo, DK64, Shadow Man, Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, etc. These also required a 4MB RDRAM expansion "pak" that you swapped out with a terminator module (or "jumper pak") in the top front of the system.

I know there's more but I just plain forget. :(

Perfect Dark also had a "high-res mode" that put it at 640x480, but the framerate absolutely bombed while that was enabled.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron also had a Hi-Res mode with the ram pack installed. It actually made quite a difference.

Ok it's official now. This new GE game will suck.

I agree Brosnan is the most cliche Bond there is, but I also think it also makes him the best Bond for video games.

I don't know how good this is going to be. Every Bond game to come out has sucked and the only reason Goldeneye did so well, cause there wasn't exactly a plethora of console FPS games, let alone multiplayer ones.

Goldeneye did well because it was a fun game. Multiplayer was a blast; In 1997 it was probably the most fun 4 people could have on a couch with their clothes on.

I still don't get WHY......

A: why do people still care that much about a game that came out in 1997
B: why do players today care that it is coming out again with semi better graphics

If they are changing the whole story give it another name....They are hoping that the name golden-eye slapped on a box is going to = $$$$$ and it will work because people are stupid.

LOL @ any multiplayer FPS on the Wii being anything but terrible.

Why do you say that? The story was the last thing that made goldeneye the great game that it was.

As long as they stay faithful to the gameplay that the original had (and it sounds like they are), I'm sure it will be a huge success for them.
