I just picked up a system on craigslist for 150 dollars it came with among other things (a 4 core AMD 3.0ghz processor) a 9600gt. The cards seems okay, but I was wondering if upgrading to a 6770 would be worth it. I really don't play much more then Counter Strike Source which runs at max 60fps with vsync without skipping frame, but I just wonder if a 6770 could do more for me.

you should be able to snag a 4870 or gts 250 for $65 shipped. that would give you a nice boost in fps for cheap

What resolution is your monitor?

If CS: Source is the most demanding game you play often, I'd say no, no it's not worth it. I had a 9600GT for a short period of time (10 days) and it was pegged at 60 frames in Dust with 20 bots and 16xQ CSAA maximum at 1680. If on the other hand, you play BC2, and have $100 to spend on a card, the 5770 is not a bad choice, as is a GTX 460 768MB (which I'm using).

The 6770 (which is only a rebranded 5770 btw.) can do one thing that your current card cannot do: It supports Eyefinity for 3-monitor gaming.

However the 6770 is not a good deal, for the same price you can get a Radeon 5830 already. If your PSU can handle it, that is.

Thanks for the tips about the 6770 really just being a 5770 thats the kind of stuff I usually miss. If thats the case I think I might get a 5770.

Installing Battlefield Bad Company 2 right now just to see how it runs.

I went from 2 9600GT's in SLI to a single 5770 and I would say it doubled my performance or better. Thats when paired with an overclocked E8400 on a 1080p plasma. I can play Crysis 2 (don't flame me please) on max settings at around 30FPS, or on high settings around 50-60 FPS.

Also if you have an SLI motherboard I still have both 9600GT's if you want to take them off my hands super cheap. Just shoot me a PM.

I love my 5770 and I have yet to have a game make it feel weak. Yes I am only gaming at 1440x900, But it is a solid card mine has a passive cooler and is overclocked a little and never gets above 50C

OP get a 5830 I think it is still on sale for $100. 5770=4870 performance which is getting a little long in the tooth IMO. If not the 460 is the better card to get.

I can attest that BC2 runs great on a 5770 at his native rez.

OP - If you can find the 5770 cheap then go for it, you will get another 10% performance by going with a 5830, and another 30% by going with a 460, but if the price isn't right for you just know that the 5770 is more than capable.

ltr, if you have vsync enabled it will only be at 60 fps. unless you have a monitor that can do 120hz which vsync on will cap to 120fps.

if u disable vsync, the source engine i think caps at 300 fps

Thanks guys I learned a lot from this thread I will look into the 5830 if I can find a good deal I'll pick one up otherwise I think a 5770 would be quite a nice card for what I do.

sorry but that is nonsense. no way in hell a 5770 is twice as fast a 9600gt sli setup. heck looking through reviews a 5770 is not even twice as fast as a single 9600gt overall.

But there are numerous things to take into consideration. A: He has a dual core processor. B: he most likely had the 512mb ones with all the eye candys turned on, the 1gb of vram will help. C: His mobo more likely than not is a dual x8 or single x16 bandwidth.

Just some food for thought.
