Absolutely go get the FreeSpace Open installer so you can install mods- they released the source code some time ago and there's some serious mods out there, including graphics upgrades and a few other things that make the game still look pretty damn good.

Edit: Looks like the launcher Knossos is the launcher of choice these days. The Freespace Upgrade Project if memory serves replaces the meshes with higher detailed models & textures and is kind of the starting point for going down the rabbit hole.
