I'm just the opposite, i keep the camera pretty close, unless i'm fighting something that I come up to it's knees, then i have to zoom out.
 
The game tries to cater to more people and run smoothy with many players on screen at the same time. It looks ok imo, though definitely not high end. But these games are really all about gameplay.
