Yeah, Niflheim is a massive grind and it isn't fun, either. Once you make a couple passes through the fog, you've seen all there is to see. The fact that there are multiple locked chests and realm tears is lame. Even maxing out your runs, it still takes like 10 runs to totally complete.
The best way to deal with that (or anything tedious in GoW) is to turn the difficulty as low as it'll go. It doesn't seem to affect anything in terms of your rewards or your ability to get achievements/trophies, so it can make grindy sections like Niflheim and Muspelheim more tolerable.

I did all the side stuff that I could in the main normal realms. Skipped the two optional realms since they seem to just be gear grinding areas.

Overall had a blast with the game, got 35 hours out of it. It's going to be a long wait for the next game.

Will be cool for the next game to open the same way this game did, but it opens with you fighting Thor, as alluded to in the ending.

Works on regular monitors just found this program too bad the actual game didn't have a FOV slider I was pretty disappointed.

I completed NG+ this morning and (finally) got the platinum trophy/achievement. Overall, I can't say it added all that much to the game. There are 3-4 truly new armor sets, 2 new special attacks, and new (extra rare/strong) red versions of the better armor sets from your first pass. If you max out your gear and gems, you can hit level 10. I don't think 11 is possible, but it might be. Normal enemies are mostly the same and the game itself doesn't really deviate much from your first go-round. You do have the blades much earlier, so you can occasionally get a couple treasures sooner. Plot-wise, you can't go anywhere you couldn't before.
The difference is 95% in the Valkyrie fights. They went from really hard to "Fromsoft hard." They have the same attacks, but they're faster, they do more damage, you do less, and they love to bust out their strongest attacks at the worst possible times.

^This!! On the PS4 that's where I stopped playing. It just got tedious and I never went back. I caved and rebought this on steam, and I just got back the blades but I am still hoping I don't just drop this when I hit Niflheim again. It was a terrible area that killed the game momentum and any desire I had to actually finish it IMO.

You don't have to play it, that or the other realm. Just skip them and focus on the main realms & the storyline. All the side-quests worth doing that have a story attached anyways are in midgard.

These two optional realms pretty much only exist for better gear grinding so you can fight the Valkyries. Of course, on easier difficulties you don't need said gear to beat them..

Yeah, Niflheim is totally optional. It's basically a circular randomized dungeon with unique currency, "mist echos." There are some decent rewards in the chests and realm tears (plus the mist armor is among the game's best), but you can totally skip it if you want.

If you're just looking to blow through it quickly and get the rewards, I highly recommend lowering the difficulty to "give me a story." From there, just circle around the dungeon starting on the right side. Just keep hugging the right wall. That'll take you to every room in the dungeon and it'll give you the maximum number of mist echos + other mist rewards. The more echos you collect, the more each subsequent chest will have. With the difficulty set that low, you're unlikely to die because of something stupid and it'll speed the whole process up by 2x. After you make a few rounds, go to the blacksmith and sell off the random other stuff you found for more mist echos. Don't forget to buy the stone that unlocks the middle area, too. Just make sure you keep a few items that are needed to upgrade the mist armor set. If you do it right, you can actually get everything you need from Niflheim in about 30-45 minutes. When you're done, then set the difficulty back where you want it.

You can do the exact same thing with the Muspelheim trials if you're looking to complete them but don't want a multi-hour slog. Lower the difficulty and then set it back where you like when you're finished. You can replay the trials later so there's no harm in blowing through everything on easy mode to save time.

The problem is that getting to 2 of the valkyries requires playing through Niflheim and Muspelheim.

Before it came out on PC I knew nothing about this game, hell I knew nothing about it even after I bought it other than watching a trailer and liking how it looked and reading forum posts. I'm only 7.9 hours through but it's nice and fun for sure.

The SFX in this game and how fluid everything feels in terms of combat mechanics and stuff is just on another level. Horizon was nice but I got bored of the lacklustre sound effects in the game or quality of weapon sounds etc whilst God of War is just immensely cinematic and makes my stereo bookshelves rumble to the point I can feel deep voices and resonance in my chest. Simply stunning.

I mean look at this!

God-of-War-2022.01.24---19.13.gif

And man does it look stunning in general...

What NVIDIA GPU is required to have medium to high level SSRTGI which came out along Driver 511.23?
Did anyone try SSRTGI in God of war to share results?

I took out my 240hz Alienware Monitor for this game looks Super Smooth but my System was trying hard to keep up. I just boxed it back up using the VA 144hz.

Any RTX, I have the Studio driver installed so can't try SSRTGI right now but am about to install the game ready driver and give it a go as it looks cool.

Just went through the garden witch part last night and I thought the exact same, lot of art work going with solid control-gameplay-fluidity.
I've been told it gets even better a bit later on too so I cannot wait.

Hmm I tried but failed. The latest game ready driver but I don't see SSRTGI or anything like it in Game Filters when pressing ALT+F3 in the game. I look on nvidia's page for Freestyle too and don't see God of War listed so maybe that's why. ANyone else figure this out? I am not paying a monthly fee to patreon to try something like this out.

Do you have in Geforce experience SSRTGI checked? Then filter should be visible like that

Most of them only have 3 or 4 moves that are heavily telegraphed and need to be dodge, blocked, or interrupted. For example, some of them will hover in the air and spin their weapon before slamming down on you for massive unblockable damage; when they do that have Atreus attack them and it will interrupt and cause it fall to the ground. I just went back to questing until I felt like I was close to the end of the game and then went back and smashed them with no issues.

One of the best strategies for starting any fight with them is to go absolutely ham to begin the fight. Fire up your talisman and then use a running strong attack followed by using both of your specials in a row. Make sure your specials are among the most damaging ones you have. Have Atreus firing arrows rapid-fire to start things and you might even consider having him use a summon, too. Remember that you have specials for both your axe and your chains, so after using your specials, swap weapons. You can do a lot of damage before the fight really begins. Once it does get going, it's helpful to know that red circles onscreen = you have to roll dodge while yellow circles = you can parry OR roll dodge. Be sure to lock on, too. If one gets behind you, you're gonna get wrecked. The game doesn't really let you dodge attacks from behind even when it should. Have Atreus shoot arrows whenever they float in the air. They're still tough fights, but do your best to learn individual attacks and how to avoid/block each one. Most of the Valkyrie's share 2-3 attacks, so your efforts with the first one can work for subsequent ones.

Hmm, its been a while so I don't remember the details. At the time I didn't think it was optional, but it's quite possible that because some gear was locked behind it was the reason I didn't feel it was optional like Bankie said lol.

It's all optional gear/completionist grinding stuff. The main quest line doesn't have anything to do with those realms, and further, neither do the dwarf or spirit favor side-quest lines which are the only side-quest lines of note in the game anyways.

You don't ever have to set foot in Niflheim or Muspelheim. You also don't ever have to fight a single Valkyrie, dig up a treasure, close any realm tears, etc.

There are only a couple real bosses in the game that you actually have to fight. Magni/Modi, one of the dragons, the head of the dark elves, and Baldur. There are trolls and ancients, too, but they're more like minibosses. The tough stuff in this game is almost entirely optional and the elite gear in the game is designed for those fights/areas. If you stick to the main story and don't deviate, you can just use whatever gear falls in your lap along the way.

Honestly, the hardest fight that you actually have to do is near the end where you've got to fight three of those dark elf bosses at the same time. If you're on a harder difficulty and haven't really done a lot of side content for gear, it's a pretty tough fight. The 'big boss' fights, to include the final one, are all really easy.

I'm having a real hard time trying to get into this game.
The combat feels anemic (the only other melee combat games I've played in the last 5 years or so were Soulsborne and Mordhau), the story is boring so far, and the weirdly repressed (how many times is Kratos about to comfort Boy and then hold back?) dad/boy interactions just don't do it for me either. I'm at the part were we drained a lake or whatever - does it get any better?

Everything just feels slow - combat rolls, turning (yes I know about quick turn), attacks etc.
I don't mind slow if it's done right like RDR2 for example, but this is just tedium at this point.

I played the original GoW games a looong time ago, but this doesn't feel connected to those at all in terms of gameplay and plot outside of starring Kratos.

Personally I think this fits perfectly into the GoW series of games. Compared to the first 3 GoW games, yeah this game isn't like them game play wise, even story wise it has shifted. It is much closer to most open world games like Tomb Raider, Dark Souls, Witcher 3, etc. GoW 1-3 was more like Sony's solution to fast action twitchy games like Ninja Gaiden (more fixed linear progress with predetermined camera angles and never ending fast fights, definitely feels like a "younger" gamer game). They shifted the whole game design for this GoW game. Personally I like the change because it makes it feel like Kratos has grown older (kind of like me lol). It is reflected both in the game play just as much as the story IMHO and is why I think I really like the game even if I never finished it on the PS4. Where in the original GoW 1-3 games Kratos wasn't careful, he was like a raw raging exposed nerve dispatching everything in the way. Here he is vastly more experienced, thinks before he acts, and understands actions have consequences. The whole awkward interaction in the beginning kind of drives a point across that Kratos was very much an absent dad for most of the kid's life and left the work of raising the kid almost entirely to his wife. Now that his wife isn't there to take care of the son, he is left in a 'how do I do this?' kind of place. As far as story plot fitting into the previous games, it will definitely fit in slowly as you play it at least for as far as I played. They definitely touch on Kratos' past when the kid finds out they are both gods. Combat has a large depth to it but it does take a while to unlock it. I believe you are at most level 2 right now so you will be quite limited as far as combat moves go. You are basically only warming up. :)

No actually and the kb/m controls are indeed quite wonky, at least for me. Only reason is I travel for work and the majority of my time spent playing games is on my laptop. It may not seem like much but I don’t have the room for a controller in my backpack with 2 laptops, an iPad, a Switch, and everything else lol.

One of the best strategies for starting any fight with them is to go absolutely ham to begin the fight. Good tips thanks for that. I kind of figured out the going ham thing at the start of the fight last night. I only had blue gear at first so I ventured off for a while and at least got some purple, upgraded it and the blades twice, and was able to finally beat the first one after a few tries. Still was not easy at all but beating them feels pretty rewarding once you finally pull it off.

Muspelheim made me rage quit. I know I'm 'older' and my reflexes aren't the best anymore but fuck that "Kill 20 enemies without getting hit AT ALL" fight. Best run was got down to 6 left and those guys that AE explode on death just clipped me.

I'm too old for this shit.

That one took me a while. My eventual strategy was to stay near the cliff and kick off every monster as soon as they spawned there. The rest of the enemies I alternated between Axe throws and special abilities.

Yup - I decided to stick with the game just a bit past my usual "this is a waste of time" threshold.
Combat really started to open up and the story got more interesting as well! Now I have the opposite problem of not getting anything else done besides GoW...

Finished the Valkyries off last night. I just have a couple center chests and the realm tears left in Niflheim and it looks like there are additional challenges in Musphelheim to do before I'll have 100% completed. Once I built all the pieces of the Niflheim fog armor it hasn't been as bad as it was but running around the map grinding mist is still a drag.

That’s your choice. No one is forcing you to play the optional grind content.
