Global Agency Reconsiders `.XXX' for Porn Sites

It has been so long since we’ve discussed the .XXX extension for porn sites, I forgot what side of the debate we were on. What exactly is wrong with using .XXX again? Why are people against it?

Parents would be able to use the system to help block access to porn sites, though because its use would be voluntary, the ".xxx" suffix wouldn't keep such content entirely away from minors. Religious and other anti-porn groups worry that ".xxx" would legitimize porn sites, and the proposal has already been rejected three times since 2000

It makes it too easy to find porn. You know, to block it... Or because anything involving porn is bad, including things that are made to block porn.

But holy hell, whoever domain squats google.xxx...

This is so stupid. "Legitimize", man these people need a life. You can't stop the porn! Porn is the main reason there is an internet. Well... a good portion of it. I mean, after all, we have ".gov" and that still hasn't made our government any more legit. I say let it pass and find ways to actually improve life rather than nit picking and bitch'n about things that have been apart of human nature since the beginning. Like gigabyte internet access!!! :D

Giving porn its own domain would further legitimize and solidify pornography's place in society. Neither of those things are good since the massively negative effect it has on the pinnacle of human expression (AKA: Making Love).

Its like setting out a room for local hooligans who vandalize your house and steal things for drug money just so you can better keep your eyes on them.

Sorry, porn has been solidified and legitimized by society since, errrr, the Greeks? Eqyptians? Giving porn it's own place on the web would make life easier for parents to keep track of "things".

As far as porn having any real impact on the art of making love, other than giving people ideas of things to try, the only thing negatively impacting love making is crappy relationships.

Where's the line? Who decides what is a .xxx and what is clean enough for .com?

The problem with .xxx, is there is very little global consensus on what is pornography vs art or educational materials or blasphemy or criminal.

You can't create a new category for names that nobody will agree what belongs and what doesn't.

I believe the discussion last time was something along the lines of how to decide what sites got to keep their name, since it would mean moving ALL porn sites to .xxx. For example, if there's a boobies.com, a boobies.net, a boobies.co.uk etc etc, who gets boobies.xxx? I vote leave it alone, imagine the millions of bookmarks that would no longer be valid around the world :D

The adult industry is against it because they wouldn't want to be forced to use it because so many people would just block it automatically anyway.

The anti-adult people seem to think it'll create more sites?

Existing websites would be able to purchase the .xxx version of their .com in advance, but that is just one more domain they'd have to pay for.

If they made it so that .xxx was the only legal way to host a porn site, that would really be a quick and clean solution to the internet porn problem once and for all. Making it so someone can't access a .xxx site is literally millions of times easier than blocking them from every porn site online.

They could make it so every old porn site .com becomes a new porn site .xxx and the old .com remains as a forwarder...

He was here the last time we talked about this and he said the same thing, I think. So, yes, presumably he's serious.

My opinion: .xxx should be made available without stipulation that porn sites must use it. Reputable sites are going to switch over, because most reputable sites already take part in some sort of identification program (whereby their participation ensures that porn filters include their sites as pornographic). Other sites will choose not to for one reason or another.

The way to prevent non-pornographic site owners from buying .xxx domains would be to make them cost prohibitive. Have 'em start at $100, for instance, and you'll dramatically reduce squatting issues.

I will buy all sex related .xxx domains before it comes out and sell all of them for a fortune. Anyone want to buy my sex.xxx web domain?

What internet porn problem?

Sure let me clarify, the fact that parents and organizations even need porn site blockers at all, and that they aren't even always 100% effective. Porn should have it's own restricted zone where only those who are allowed to enter in normal society are allowed to enter on the internet. It's not so easy as it is currently set up. Like I said, it's literally millions of times harder as it is, because that's how many web sites there are.

And don't get me wrong, I was looking at porn when I was 12 years old, but that didn't turn out so well for me.

Wait, aren't the millions of men watching Pr0n on their desktops including myself once, instead of going out to meet women legitimizing it already. What religious groups do to try to keep control amazes me :roll.

Though it seems he is... I wonder how people come to have such an opinion on things... Either way, if you think the porn industry isn't legitimized already as it is, I only have one question for you.

Did Marty McFly put up much of a fight when you robbed him of his DeLorean? :p

Adults can choose to do it. As responsible parents and adults who look after kids it makes it easier for us to assure they avoid them. I've always been an advocate of the .xxx domain. Do it already. There is no compelling reason not to.

You mean as opposed to the ongoing fight we have right now dealing with their pop-ups? Oh, how so late 90's and early 00's.

greek husbands and fathers had little boy lovers on the side and it got to a point where that was normal. even now gays are putting up ads which essentially get them a live-in lover.

there have been societies where it was normal to take pleasure in murder and rape and even to feed the flesh of one spouse to another, while the children watched.

hey whatever we want right?

all im saying is if people want to do whatever they want to do, fine. sure. go ahead. but dont keep throwing it into my face and practically advocating it or worse, telling me its normal or ok. i have just as much right to think it's a bunch of crap as you do to think it's the most amazing thing you've ever seen.

put up the xxx domain so that parents and schools and anyone else who cares about any semblence of sexual purity can more easily block out that crap.

and btw...i'm with you in thinking that arguing that xxx would legimate porn is a lame, stupid argument.

There are a myriad of reasons for and against this, I'd say most are moot unless you can solve the quoted point in an equitable manner.

porn is the most natural thing we have on the internet, ironically. i think... i really dont know what ironic means. but i think .xxx is a good idea, i cant imagine what would be wrong with it. i could build computers that dont go anywhere BUT porn sites... make it coin-operated and duct tape a bottle of purel to the side. shit i just got a new business idea.

Thats the only valid argument against XXX I have ever read. Yet even so, some things are clearly over the line. I don't think nudity its self warents .XXX, any sexual activity, (that is with the models own self or others) should rate the .XXX.

I believe that covers most cultures, anyone have further input on what one culture might think is Art vs another thinks is porn?

Can I see your sources for lines one and two? With line one in particular the second part. I wont quibble the definition and age of "little boys"

Trying to make rules for what belongs in .xxx or .com based on not offending certain cultures is doomed to fail, I won't bother pointing out the cultures/religions that are beyond uptight about sex or nudity. I like where you drew the line between art and porn initially, seems simple and straight forward enough. I am sure people would like to cloud everything up with detailing exactly what constitutes porn or art but the only way that .xxx could work would be if folks kept things as simple as possible.

It's usually pretty apparent what is meant to be educational and what isn't, as to the criminal aspect...not really sure how that should be addressed or if it should be at all in relation to .xxx. What is considered criminal varies too greatly for there to be any kind of general consensus most likely.

I'm for a designated domain for pr0n, but .xxx seems a bit harsh in terms of connotaion. There's some popular softcore sites out there (no intercourse, just models), and don't have that harsh "hardcore sex" tone of .xxx. It could hurt their image. .sex seems like a decent domain, or something that denotes "adult" material (.adu maybe? too close to .edu though).
