Gizmodo has "voluntarily agreed to turn over information" to the authorities in the iPhone 4 case? Why? What ever happened to protection for journalists and their anonymous sources?

The agreement between Chen and the San Mateo County District Attorney's office, which calls for the DA to drop attempts to search Chen's property, puts an end to the dispute over whether the search of Chen's computer gear was lawful while also providing the DA's office with the information it sought from Chen, said Chief Dep. District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe in an interview with CNET on Friday.

I see the future!

Ok the LOST iphone 4 was actually the one that worked.

Ok, so they had to make a new one in 3 weeks or something because all the hardrives failed on the mac pros because of microsoft flash viruses.

Therefore the whole worst phone/company ever thing is all engadgets fault.

lol fatty, not unless ya' had another job lined up... but I agree, it's pretty unbelievable, the press should be protected.

The press should only be protected when acting to protect the interests of the public when dealing with releasing details from/of "stolen" items. When it's only pre-release specifications for a product, it only serves to drive page views to the journalist's site, plus this is after they've sent a "ransom" letter to the company that owns the product, IMHO, the "journalists" don't deserve any protection in this case.

I don't want it to get to the point that any thief can create a blog and claim "journalistic" protection.

Calling Gizmodo journalists is pushing it. A bunch of children run that place.

It's not up to the police to protect the journalist's sources... it's up to the journalist. I would never dream of leaking information for people the likes of Gizmodo.

Gizmodo are a bunch of immature punks who only count as "journalists" because the rest of the industry has sunk so low. If they cared anything about confidentiality, they shouldn't have published the name of the employee whose phone it was.

It's up to them if they disclose their sources or not, but they knowingly purchased stolen property. Someone on their staff deserves jail time.

From reading the article it looks like gizmodo didn't have a strong position. From the judges actions it looks like the law only protects anonymous sources so the judge appointed a third party to search the comps and give only iphone4 data to the DA.

This DA probably has 20 capital murders on hold so he can indulge his Apple-fanboyism and ruin these guys lives. Sad.

Their source lost his anonymity when Giz announced who he was. Then Giz proceeded to go out, quite a bit like a bitch. Out like a bitch, Gizmodo went...

california is two steps away from being a welfare state, and this is the crap they spend money on?

They knowingly received goods without the consent of the lawful owner. That is theft or receiving stolen property, depending on how the DA wants to push it. They then revealed trade secrets, violating the Uniform Trade Secrets Act and documented the entire thing on the Internet for all to see.

Gizmodo was involved in activities that might have been deemed illicit. And they are cooperating, aren't they? I don't see the issue. Most of the information that led to this came from sources other than Gizmodo anyway.

Because it looks good that they didn't have to take the info by force and likely have a undisclosed deal to get the heat off of them and on the original guy who took it. They aren't the NY Times or some other outfit that can fight this for years on end. They probably just want it over.

common sense has no place in the workings of a machine that big once it gets rolling.....thats why you have to build it right or it will go way off course, and bankrupt itself

And Ca will bankrupt itself. Our legislature is a group of incompetent morons.
