My rig is in my sig:

I have some stupid questions.......

I bought 4GB Mushkin XP PC2-6400 EPP memory and when I put it in an pressed the power button, the computer comes on for about 2 seconds, shuts off then turns on and boots....weird.

When I tried booting to windows, I kept getting BSODs. Now, this ram has printed on it 2.0v. Is the default setting for ram in the bios 1.8v? If so, if I use the DDR Overvolt bios and d seand set it to 0.20+ v give me 2.0v? According to Everest my 2.5v setting is 2.0v and according to Easytune 5 it is set to 2.0v.

When I use CPU-Z it says my memory frequency is set to 533Mhz and my FSB:RAM is set to 1:2 with timings of 5-5-5-15. Isn't it supposed to be set to 4-4-3-10 @ 400MHz? How do i set it to do that? I don't want to kill my ram.

+2 on the RAM to make it 2.0V, you're good there.

Set the RAM to run @ 800mhz in the bios. Maybe press F1 or CTL + F1 while in the bios to show extra options.

Set the timings manually!
 
You need to read your manual. Gigabyte likes to hide memory timing adjustments. When you first get to your bios screen, hit "ctrl + F1". Your screen will flicker. When you go into your overclocking section, you'll see more options now for you to tweak.

It is normal for the board to reboot after adjustments are made in the bios (at least for overclocking). If your machine goes into an endless boot-reboot loop, you push overclocking too far. Power down. Unplug your power cord and clear your CMOS with a jumper or use a spare jumper on the CMOS clear pins. When you reboot, your machine will be back at default fsb 266.
 
in my overclocking of my E6600, I had to go with setting voltages via "auto". Everytime I tried to set manually, I couldn't find a combination of adjustments to give a good OC. With auto, I maxed out 3.36 from the stock 2.4. Dropping my mult and raising my fsb didn't improve my final overclock.

I did read the manual--it says nothing about what I asked. But the ctrl F1 thing I did not know about. Thank you.

Ok so i have the voltage set right for the ram. The system memory is set to Auto which says 800 but CPU-Z says the frequency is 533MHz. I dunno.......
 
The reboot sequence happens on some Abit models. I don't think it's memory related.
 
Any idea why CPU-Z is seeing 533MHz as the frequency instead of 400MHz? it is set to SPD in the bios and the BIOS says 800.

If CPU-Z says 533, you're actually running at 1066...that very well might be your problem.
 
I have same mobo and found same issue with boot stalling then restarting. After reading a few different ideas on what was causing it I flashed bios to latest public version v4 and selected "option 2" for high speed ram settings under MI. Nary a hitch yet. Almost finished getting all my hardware sorted and i want to OC my 6320. Anyone have experience with this mobo/cpu tandem?

Go into your bios and use a 1:1 ratio,
System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [2.00]
This is a 1:1 divider, memory speed will be 2x FSB.
 
I would like it to say 400mhz in CPU-Z. I manually set it to 3 to get 2:3 for the ratio. And now CPU-Z reports correctly. I assume that using the AUTO settings for System Memory Mulitplier is not a good thing? Now I just have to manually change the timings.

It just sounds like your SPD timings and speeds are very aggressive.

Yeah. Based on the screenshot i posted, do you think I did any damage to my memory running it that way? I wasn't getting any instability or weirdness.

No, you're not going to do damage to them unless you're running big voltage through them.

Well, in your case, it sounded like you were having stability issues at 533mhz, so 400mhz would probably be better. 533 is faster, but unstable...400 is "slower" (I doubt you'd notice the difference), but more stable.
 
I wasn't having any stability or weirdness running it at 533Mhz. In fact, i had the system performance set to EXTREME as well and wasn't having any issues. I was concerned I was "hurting" my ram by running it @ 533Mhz instead of 400Mhz.

I thought you said you were getting BSOD's in the OP...oh well...my bad. If your system runs fine at 533, I see no reason to not run it at that. I understand you'll probably have to up the voltage, but the manufacturer knows that, and 2.2V or whatever you have to use to get 533mhz stable is probably what they intend for you to use anyway. Most of the high performance stuff over DDR2 800 is 2.0-2.2V recommended by manufacturer. You'll experience lockups and BSOD's if your memory is getting too hot to start going bad.

I was originally, but as soon as I bumped the ram voltage up 0.20 + to make it 2.0v, the BSODs went away. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that point.

The 533Mhz frequency reporting by CPU-Z was the 2nd "problem" I was having, but it wasn't really a problem because the machine was working fine. I was just concerned that I was damaging the ram in some way by running it the way it was set. Was having it at 533Mhz really running it at 1066 FSB? Did my mobo actually think it could run at that speed hence the reason why it was set that high? I had OCZ PC2-6400 in there before with the same settings and CPU-Z reported the frequency at 400Mhz with a 2:3 FSB to Dram ratio.
 
Anybody have an idea as to why, since I have put the mushkin ram in, when I hit the power button, the machine powers up for a second or two, shuts down, then powers up fully and boots into windows?

I tried option 2 and it didn't change. This happens with 1, 2 or 4 sticks of memory installed.
