Better late than never. :p

A German ban on selling Doom to teenagers has been lifted after 17 years.

The classic video game was put on an index of controlled titles in 1994 as it was deemed likely to harm youth.

Like pornography, sales of the violent shoot 'em up were restricted to adult-only stores.

The rules have been relaxed because officials believe that Doom is now only of artistic and scientific interest and will not appeal to youngsters.

"We are obviously very pleased with their decision," Bethesda Softworks VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines told us this morning. "Can't give you details yet on when they will be available in Germany. We'll let everyone know as soon as we know."

man... germany has some strange rules. Violence is verboten :)p), yet their pron is extremely messed up.

Their version of TF2 craks me up. Instead of blood and gore when someone gets gibed, screws/gears/etc fall out of the charactors

In the German Turok the Dinosaur Hunter game, all the dinosaurs are robots and bleed oil lol.

You can enable this if you really feel so inclined. Among the gears and such, you also gib into happy things like hamburgers and unicycles.

I never did quite understand why they have rules like that over in DE. Everything has been perfectly normal in my travels over there. There are even stores full of replica assault weapons that shoot plastic bullets and plenty of violent movies. Oh well!

Reminds me of Japan. Their porn takes fetishes to new heights... but make sure you blur the naughty bits! ;)

My @#$%#$ history teacher lied to me. He said the nazis lost WWII.

Germany is actually starting to learn that their politically motivated censorship campaign was a reactionary move in an attempt to redeem their image after WW2, but is also similar to what was happening in the 30's and 40's anyway.

Then they were paying attention when Truman sent over a little boy and a fat man to Japan.

Ha, I never knew that Nintendo of American (circa 1994) ran Germany. Learn something new every day!

Does this apply to the entire series or only the original game?

If it's the whole series, the comment that it is "only of artistic and scientific interest and will not appeal to youngsters" is a bit of a backhanded compliment. Doom 3 isn't that old at all, and id is already working on Doom 4.

The classic video game (singular) was put on an index of controlled titles in 1994 (well before doom 3) as it was deemed likely to harm youth.
