A power deliver system is no easy feat, you can't just add more components, you have to consider electrical engineering stuff....like interference.


Someone needs to Ask Nvidia if they play tested their reference design in house or just drew it down on a napikin and sent it to all the AIB's...
 
I'm thinking AMD at this point. Nvidia and AIB partners have f'd this up beyond belief.

Well it's one thing when you can't get the product. It's another when you can't get a product with a possible hardware flaw. Then it's like "why bother"?

Don't get me wrong. This gen may be the time to buy AMD. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

Anyway, NV has had cards out for a week. Every big release lately is a CF for everyone, Intel, AMD and NV.

I know it's deemed cool around these places to hate on everyone but AMD, but they fare no better with releases.
 
All the AIBs are within the Nvidia design reference specification. Looks like Nvidia gave them bum dope. AIBs want the better or competing performance, boosting a little too much. Some may not even know their card is next to crashing because the card is not being cooled as good so the boost level never gets to the crash point, until winter hits, temperature goes down and we get to see another wave of CTD complaints. What happens when Nvidia puts out a card at MSRP then charge so much to the AIBs that they go by the minimum spec so their card is not priced out of the market, which obviously Nvidia min spec does not work. I bet some AIBs are rather livid about this, I am sure Nvidia is a good partner when you need them, bump gate? Probably not.

Well maybe it was good that Nvidia did not have that many for sell, this problem would have been way worst.
 
Even though it'll affect the boost clocks a firmware update will fix the problem affecting these AIB cards.

There appears to be a flaw in Nvidia's web store causing it to display the email address and more personal information from other shoppers at random...a Reddit poster published a screenshot of what they claim is another user's email address and "partially masked" credit card information...multiple other posters confirmed they'd seen a stranger's email address when logging in to check an order...

I haven't had an AMD video card since 2003. Seriously I looked it up a while back. So I'm not an AMD fan boy.

I would say this Nvidia release is the worst I've ever seen by a mile.

Not me. I'd say the Dustbuster and the 280 were far worse. Don't get me started on the 480.

AMD doesn’t really have a great track record either. Might be worth waiting a week or two after launch and checking the owners threads. I have trouble remembering an issue-free AMD launch. Maybe the 390x if that counts?

I am practically onboard the skip Ampere train. I’ll wait for Hopper or the off chance AMD delivers on rasterized and RT.

Yup it's the capacitors. Some of the AIBs were CHEAPING out on them and instead of doing one of the expensive array and 5 of the cheaper ones, they were just going all 6 cheap capacitors cos they were like we'll save a few bucks LULZ nobody will know the difference! EXCEPT it does make a difference, enough to cause crashes because of the dirty power delivery. That's why the FE cards run mostly flawless because Nvidia made sure to put in TWO of the expensive capacitor arrays in both their 3080 FE and 3090 FE. It's safer to buy FE if this concerns you. If you can't get hands on an FE card, you will have to research carefully to see what Brands and Models have the proper power delivery capacitors.

The ASICS come from NV via manufacture by their Fab and VRAM from Micron ( or whoever was making the VRAM back then.) I thought Foxconn made the PCB and assembled the boards back in the day.

Which card are you using though? Some have the proper setup and filter caps that are not creating the instability. It was some AIB's going cheap on the boards that's causing issues. Look at what EVGA just confirmed. Jay's 2 cents also claims the same thing. nVidia hasn't confirmed it but their silence speaks volumes.
 
what about Gigabyte cards?...safe to buy?...they are my preferred GPU manuafacturer

Here is a list people are compiling on reddit to count caps. The "POSCAPs" are the cheaper variant and believed to be causing the issue when they aren't mixed with the higher quality MLCC's

Edit: * Nobody know's the definitive issue yet but its believed that the POSCAPS are causing dirty power delivery.
" To reiterate this is NOT confirmed as the issue. This theory is just speculative at this point from Igor's Lab. As an electronic engineer is pointing out here, this also does not equate to MLCC good POSCAP bad".

looks like the Asus cards are the best buys right now...the Gigabyte card looks pretty poor in relation to POSCAP's...will a company like Gigabyte be able to change their manufacturing process quickly with Revision 2.0 cards?...will they even want to or just keep the current cards in the market?

EVGA says they caught and fixed the issue. None of the consumer boards shipped out have the bad cap layout. Thats why the FTW3 was delayed and came out after the initial launch.


From EVGAs statement:
During our mass production QC testing we discovered a full 6 POSCAPs solution cannot pass the real world applications testing. It took almost a week of R&D effort to find the cause and reduce the POSCAPs to 4 and add 20 MLCC caps prior to shipping production boards, this is why the EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 series was delayed at launch. There were no 6 POSCAP production EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 boards shipped
 
What a f'ing nightmare, cancelled my MSI and EVGA orders. Now to place an Asus Tuf Order, it'll match my mobo! One game that seems to really make the 3080 suffer is COD warzone according to the piles of 3080 owners complaining about inconsistent frame times and crashing on reddit. Kind of relieved I couldn't get a card at launch since it's the only game I play.
 
I don't get why people are willy nilly canceling orders when its mainly the Gigabyte and Zotac cards that have the problematic 0 MLCC and 6 POSCAP layout. EVGA FTW3 has the same 4+2 like the FE edition. MSI does 5+1.

I would have happily purchased one of those cards from someone who insists on getting an Asus 6 MLCC. Please if anyone wants to cancel please consider selling to me instead?

So i think you misunderstood me and it was partially because of the way i stated what i did. (did i need a comma maybe? idk English is hard) I cancelled my original order which was for an MSI ventus, and I instead pre-ordered the FTW3. Lol you didn't need to quote the article to me that i linked in my reply. I typically don't quote something before reading it.
 
Most of the reason for canceling the Ventus was because the small sampling of "reviews" i have seen show it running hotter than i would like. I didn't cancel anything over the crashing issue specifically.

Yes, I misunderstood you, my bad. The way you wrote it is kind of ambiguous and could be interpreted either way depending on emphasis if only looking at that one post. I didn't however read the whole thread and your other posts which would have made it clear you switched to the FTW3 and not away. So that part is on me for replying too fast without reading the whole thread.
