If you've been paying to use the GeForce Now service with your Nvidia Shield you're going to get that service for free from this point forward. Whether or not this remains the case for long is another story. However, free is always good and I'm sure users of the service won't mind one bit that Nvidia isn't charging them anymore. Further, Nvidia is hinting at future updates so there might be something else coming in the near future. We'll just have to wait and see what else they come out with.

Starting today, GeForce Now is a free service. Nvidia has sent out emails to customers saying, "Over the next few months, we’ll be upgrading your GeForce NOW service. You’ll continue to have access to your favorite membership titles and games you’ve purchased through the GeForce NOW store. To reward our loyal GeForce NOW gamers, we’ll stop billing your account as of May 15th, 2018 to make the transition as smooth as possible."

I got this email... first thing I thought was upgrade to what???

One excellent part about buying games via GeForce Now was they also sent Steam keys... so I am not to upset about a few purchases I made.

This is about the monthly fee people have been paying to access the streaming games
"To make up for the server costs, GeForce Now has been a paid service - $7.99 a month."

That streaming service is now free. Can't wait to try it on my Shield TV.

looks like they sold enough user data to make it free for now.

is there anything worth doing on the shield without buying the game/movies etc ?
yes the service is now free, but what do you do with it without buying more stuff ?

I really only use my Shield TV units as streaming media players and occasionally some of the Shield/Android games. I've been looking at emulation, but I haven't put any effort into it yet so as soon as I saw that GeForce Now was free I jumped on and checked it out. I was surprised at how well it worked, and I've played a handful of games I otherwise would never have tried. Pretty cool stuff!

That being said, I saw that the Shield TV Controllers are on clearance at GameStop. Makes me wonder what that's all about...

If only the Shield (2015) controller weren't such unusable hot garbage...

Maybe I'll see what needs to be done to pair a DS4 with it, or something.

I tried it when I first got my shield TV a couple of years ago and it sucked.
Too much lag, disconnections and bad IQ.

But I just tried again and it just works.
Even with my lousy 10gb connection. There are several free games like the arkam series, lego games, bioshock and many more.
Most of them I don't own, so its a welcome addition.

Btw, you want a good 5g router or better yet a wired connection

It does work well.. I got the GF hooked up to a number of Lego game after I upgraded to PS4 (many of her favorites are still PS3 only).

The only problems I ran into were some random glitches which all were sorted by turning on VSync (interestingly you have full access to all settings just like PC), and the streaming does eat up bandwidth, hit my 1TB limit fairly quickly with moderate gameplay hours (+ some usenet also to be fair). I don't think they have Netflix like compression.

They don't have a ton of free games but a few decent ones like Arkham series etc.

There are about 60 FREE games. And most are pretty good.
Been playing one of the Lego Batman games with my 4 year old on the shield in his bedroom. Performs WAY better than I expected, honestly, even over wifi. Some hiccups, but certainly not unplayable. I really should run Ethernet over to it, though.
