Wah! Something went south...

It’s Borderlands 3 we are talking about. If you like BL1 or BL2 then this ought to be good. If not, move on.

Gearbox will not screw up BL.

ACM was just a clustercuss all the way around from Gearbox to Sega to the outsourced studio... (can’t remember who...)

Borderlands 3 will be a good game if you’re into Borderlands. I’m calling it now. If I’m wrong I’ll be very surprised.

Let’s hold back the pitchforks and torches at least until we know...

You say they won’t screw up BL right after I posted about a remaster of BL1 with added micro transactions. I promise you they will find a way to screw up BL because Pitchford is an asshat and because Take-Two wants all of their AAA games to have recurrrent spending models. Prepare for paid loot boxes.

I’m not a Randy fan. I’ve elaborated on that elsewhere before. I’m more interested in whether they make a fun game than the extra crap they want to sell me. BL2 had a bunch of add-on crap too. Some interesting, some not. It was still quite enjoyable. We’ll see. I’m thinking it’ll he a good game. If they push the in game sales to the point where it’s distracting, I’ll change my mind then. In the meantime, I’ll wait and see, leaning toward them being able to pull off one more game. There are more people working on this than just Randy.

Man I fucking hope so.

Or, it could be in reference to Handsome Jacks mask. I think the new villians are either Atlas higher ups that contended with Handsome Jack or possibly Handsome Jacks children.

I'm pretty sure they have a pretty good idea of what would happen if they made one.

They built a hero shooter and Blizzard mopped the floor with their corpse with Overwatch. Everyone said at the time, "They should just stick to Borderlands."

If they do a BR game now, I think exactly the same thing would happen again.

I'm hoping they know that they should "Just stick to Borderlands". It's what they know how to do, and do well.

I dont know how they'll top Jack but I hope they do. That was one of the best villains I've experienced in a game. The writing and the actor they got to voice him was just fantastic IMO. I too am hoping they dont mess up BL3.

I do hope it's not some BR game, getting sick of those already. I hope it's more like the old borderlands with maybe more refined rpg elements and more guns obviously

Okay, I am mildly hyped. I am still not convinced this isn't just the same exact gameplay loop, though, with nothing new mechanically.

I do like the idea of having multiple planets, that should mix things up a bit.

Have to admit, the trailer was pretty dope overall.

LOOT BOXES! INCOMPLETE SEASON PASSES! GAMEPLAY TWEAKED TO ENCOURAGE SPENDING MONEY IN THE DIGITAL STORE FRONT!

Yeah, I loved 1 and 2, but I can't get excited for what Gearbox has planned for the 'modern' 'live service' ecosystem.

That's pretty much my expectation as well.

On the surface, I'm excited. I enjoyed all the Borderlands games, with BL2 probably the most (and TPS next in line). I'm certainly up for another one and the video shows a lot of the pieces are there to make a new one great (I do wonder if any of the older heroes will be playable, or if there will be a case of older characters being way cooler than the ones you control), but it is all in the implementation. With luck, Aspyr (or Feral, or an internal team etc) is planning for a Linux port - Borderlands 2 and BL:TPS both had great native Linux clients and to this day have an enduring playerbase. I guess we'll see more on April 3rd, but I hope the release date isn't too horribly far away.

This is what concerns me. If they do things like BL2 and TPS, they have more than enough opportunity for monetization while it was still "fair". For instance, the only "loot boxes" were available using FREE Golden Key that you could get by registering game keys they posted every so often; a good tool to keep people engaged and get them nice random stuff, without it being exclusive or real money expensive. All of the Borderlands games have offered DLC done right and content heavy for the most part. Major expansions, minor expansions and events, level cap upgrades with other bonuses, buying new characters etc... all of it was pretty reasonably priced for the most part. There were also some for-pay cosmetics/color things that I could have done without but they were inexpensive at least and even more so on sale! The "Season Pass" for Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel both turned out to be quite worthwhile indeed!

If they start adding for pay lootboxes or otherwise crap up the works to encourage paying even more money, they'll ruin the good thing they've got going. Players of the series are going to be very likely to buy a Season Pass or other DLC knowing that in the past it has been viable; if they foul that up they're just asking for trouble, but it wouldn't be the first time greed caused a game company to walk off an easily visible cliff...

This.

But I'm not holding my breath. Proton/Steam Play may be the cheap way out.

You don't have to pay for any of that. Or you pay what you want to. The choice is simple.

So to set aside my cynicism for a moment:

Not BL3, but related enough to work-

Borderlands Game of the Year will be a free update to owners of the PC version, even if you don't own the DLC.

Borderlands 2 and Pre-Sequel will be getting free graphical updates, adding ultra HD textures and updating some graphical features.

You don't have to pay for any of that. Or you pay what you want to. The choice is simple.

"You don't have to pay for it" is and has always been a complete bullshit defense of predatory business practices.

I don't follow? You either want to pay for something and you do, or you don't. That's the way its always been.

Incorrect. These practices are designed to psychologically manipulate people into spending more money and then further manipulating them into spending more and more money. These predatory practices basically turned the mobile game market into a complete shit show.

Well of course, pretty much anything you buy has some form of advertising along with it. The trick is not to allow yourself to be manipulated. They are designed to make money, and make money they will, will it be your money? You have that choice.

That's why its called psychological manipulation. It's not advertising, its directly preying on customers. There are good reasons why gambling, for example, is highly regulated and why truth-in-advertising laws exist. Its not terribly hard to manipulate people into doing things they normally wouldn't and that is why these companies have psychologists on staff to help design games and spending models in ways the "encourage" recurrent spending. Beyond that, it also has a direct effect on the game design itself. Since the game is 100% built around manipulating players into spending more money they have to make sweeping changes and make the game more "boring" or "tedious" to complete in order to get people to buy into their spending modes. Or they strip out unlocks and features that used to come free with games and sell them, preying on the human desire to stand out or be unique (which is why cosmetic stuff does so well). These practices result in worse games.

It's precisely why many countries have gambling regulation boards investigating or outright banning the use of paid loot boxes in games.

You don't quite get it, do you?

When a game's mechanics, including rarity of loot, difficulty of enemies, progress of character abilities, etc. are all designed to make the player feel like they are missing something or are behind the curve, and then the game shows off all these great items, chatacter traits, missions, etc. you MIGHT get if you purchase additional tokens with your real credit card for their slot machines... Well, then it's no longer a game: it's a sales platform. One that cost ACTUAL Money to buy in the first place.

I guess I don't. I just play games because I like them. If I see something I want to pay for, I usually do, if I can afford it.

So you're okay with game publishers removing content, making you pay for it on top of the original purchase price of the game? Additional DLC that extends the scope of a game like an expansion pack, skin pack, multiplayer map pack, etc. are all fine, as they add extra content to a full game. Nowadays game publishers are more likely to plan out a full game, play test it to make sure it's as fun as possible (they usually aren't good at this part) then chop it up to a barebones state to maximise people's desire to spend EXTRA money on top of the original purchase price.

too bad they didn't announce what storefront the game would be on.... read rumours it would be an epic store exclusive...

No and I never have been. I've also posted my displeasure on this exact same topic many times here on the forums in the past.
