I have a friends Gateway MD2614 laptop and it wont boot, the dvd drive just cycles as though its trying to read something. He only wanted his data off the HD so i took that out and hooked him up with an external enclosure.
While going through the usual hardware eliminations, i got to the processor, applied some fresh thermal paste and voila, it booted. I thought maybe the processor was just overheating. So i loaded Linux from a usb stick and left a 3d screen saver running for 2 days straight. All seemed well until i let it go to sleep. After that it was back to not booting. So i went back to the processor, simply reseated it, and then the laptop booted again without a problem.
Can anyone offer any insight on whats going on here?
