1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
I'll be doing some middling gaming SC II, and some swtor and Guild wars 2 when they come out. But the benchmark I need to hit is for BF3, recommended system specs were recently tweeted by a dev here http://yfrog.com/nvfjhp (GTX 560 or Radeon 6950 + quad core cpu)

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
I just want to meet, and hopefully exceed, these requirements and build the best bang for your buck pc w/ no bottlenecking so that I'm not upgrading it too soon and so that down the road i'm not replacing parts that i paid twice as much for half the performance boost. My uneducated guess is that the sweet spot price/performance wise is probably around $1330.

3) Where do you live?
Upstate New York

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

My first build and i'm a real green so I might forget something, but here goes: CPU,GPU,RAM,MOBO,DVDDrive,SSD,

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

Acer H243H, Razer DeathAdder, M-Audio Studiophile AV 40

6) Will you be overclocking?
If I can assemble this computer without snapping anything in half or accidentally creating a black hole then I'll worry about overclocking. But yes, I'd like to have the option to in the future.

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
24

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
this week unless black friday deals start soon and you guys think ii's worth waiting a week or so.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? etc.

Obviously not starting out with 2 GPU's but If sli makes it cheaper to upgrade in the future then yes, unless 2 gfx cards is a hassle then no. No interest in raid atm, just want the mobo to be whatever the word is that means its less hassle to set up. Completely blanking on the word i wanna say standard or proprietary but i know thats not the word.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

yes.

So far this is what i'm looking to buy

$125 - NZXT Phantom Black - I know it's a bit pricy but I like the look and what i've read about it. Unless theres been a slick new case thats come out in the past 3 months (and I've looked at a few on neweggtv) then I think I'm pretty set on this case. Though the Corsair Carbide Series 500R White Steel is nice for a white case.

HDD - the one danny bui suggested just today to someone that i completely cant find now. It was around $68 and he said something along the lines of it was the best performing 1tb 7500 rpm drive

My big 3 question are about SSD since it's obviously a big expense here, thoughts on is it worth it?
I would obviously feel most comfortable with at least 128gb but could I get away with a smaller one?
and are ssd'd like hdd's where you need to keep a percentage of the drive size free in order for it to function as smoothly as possible?
I feel like I really want that application load speed especially with swtor and I'm worried if I set up this build with my os on a 1tb hdd then theres no going back.

guessing i5 2600

IMO, if you can fit it into the budget, the SSD is worth it. You should be fine with a 64GB as long as you just keep the OS + small apps and maybe one game on it with the rest of your data and games on the hard drive. IIRC, you should leave about 20% (?) free space on the SSD.

First off thanks for the help, exited to finally get this sucker bought and hopefully built. After some thought I think i'm gonna need to go bigger with the ssd, especially if I want to keep a 30-40+ GB mmo on there. But as far as the cpu and gpu you think the 6950 and 2500k is definitely where price/performance tops out? If I over-clock the cpu to 4 will I see bottlenecking with the gpu and or insufficient cooling? Not that it's super important but how loud is this setup? And can you recommend me a wireless adapter the one on my build list from 3 months ago is oos.

Just moved $1500 to my account, all set to order once I can find a SSD, does OCZ have a bad rep? they have a 120gb on sale for $125

The 2500K and 6950 is pretty much the sweet spot right now.

OCZ has a pretty bad reputation for SSDs - I personally would stay away. If you can swing it, either the Crucial M4 or the Intel 320 are good choices.

Do not go with the OCZ unit. It has a known random BSOD issue with the Sandforce based controller and OCZ's customer support has been under par recently.

Go with this 128Gb SSD if it's within' your budget.

$199.99 - Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SATA

For the price it's the best SSD for your money @ 128GB.

What Skillz and Forceman said: Don't go with OCZ. The 2500K and HD 6950 are the sweet spot for performance and price. The Crucial M4 128GB SSD is a solid SSD for the money.

So just to make sure, those two drives are the same right? Did the price just go up on the newegg one marked $199 because its showing $240 now, seeing as the amazon one is cheaper and I have free prime shipping I should go with that one right?

And how about a wifi adapter? And lastly do I need a fan controller or sound card?

They have two versions on newegg, one comes with a transfer kit which is why it costs more. Since this is a new build, the transfer kit isn't really needed so get the one for $199. If you can get it cheaper on Amazon, then by all means buy it from there.

I can't seem to find the one your talking about can you link me?

For some reason I'm seeing these two

Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2CCA 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) with Transfer Kit for $214

and

Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) for $239

^note ignore those amazon links I'm looking at it on newegg. I assume those are just affiliate links that auto display as a result of clever coding.

Well damn the price went back up. It was $200 when I copied/pasted it earlier today. Still a good buy but I'd get it off Amazon.

$197.99 Crucial 128 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA

lol alright that works for me, too bad I cant get 2day shipping on the newegg stuff as well. That SSD is gonna get here a day before the others and make me anxious.

So before I checkout let me post my newegg cart to make sure i didn't mix anything up...will edit when i figure out how to do that...

Looks good to me. Newegg usually ships really fast too, depending on where you live it might only take two days.

Only problem is the case wont let me do 2 day shipping at newegg and at amazon its saying it will take even longer, gonna drive me nuts looking at all my components without the shell to assemble most of them. On the bright side I didn't realize newegg didn't charge tax to ny residents, very cool!

Anyways thanks again to everyone for the much needed guidance!

You can always just bench assemble it and start using it while you wait for the case to come in.

If the SSD from amazon gets here at the same time as the other newegg components then I might try to.

By far the best bang for the buck motherboard is the ASrock Extreme3 Gen3 for $125 - Z68, crossfire/sli support in 8x/8x, Sata 3, USB 3, and it's a great looking motherboard to boot (matte black PCB, gold polished caps, gold trim).

Then grab 8GB of G Skill Sniper 1600mhz 1.5v RAM for about $50, a 6950 2GB, an 80+ gold 850w modular power supply, i5-2500k, whichever case suits you, etc.

I highly recommend Corsairs cases, though. They are definitely the best cases on the market as far as features and cable management goes. You should really invest in a great case that you'll love and want to keep for a long time, through upgrades and new builds. This is why I had no problem buying a Corsair 800D for $300 - I've gone through 5 cases in the past 2 years trying to find that "perfect case", and the 800D is definitely the best case on the market.

The Corsair 650D is like the little brother to the 800D, and at $190 I highly recommend it. Anybody who owns a 800D/650D/700D can tell you how amazing these chassis are. Corsair definitely delivers the highest quality products out there IMO.

That chasis looks nice but it's way to big and way to expensive for me. I'm not doing water cooling and I'm only running 1 video card I dont need a case the size of a great dane.
