Gaming on HTPC displays

Gaming question:
Does the wide format of LCDTVs that can display 1280x768 (16:9) actually enabled a wider area of viewing in most of the games (like first-person-shooters), or is the image just 'stretched' to accomodate the different viewing ratio (e.g. 16:9 vs 4:3).
 
depends on the game and what your card supports.

First, you have to be using a HD input on your TV. S-Video/composite = NO

Second, your video card must support the proper resolution/refresh rate. IIRC these are as follows:

480p: 848x480 @ 60Hz
720p: 1280x720 @ 60Hz
1080i: 1920x1080 @ 30Hz

If you're lucky/rich enough to afford a 1080p TV, then just change the 1080i to 60Hz.

Now the game must also support the resolution.

All the Unreal games work fine. Half-Life and mods work if you are using Steam.
