I have Panda and it is WAY too intrusive. Is there an anti virus that works well for performance PCs?

but does it stop spyware? I want something which allows me to browse without picking up crap that slows me down.

I currently don't run any anti-spyware software. I use Spybot to get stuff after the fact, but nothing that monitors actively. I use FireFox and Ad-Block Plus and that stops almost everything right there. That and not going to sites that are "questionable" in the first place. I believe there is an active spyware blocking portion of Spybot but that's just another process that runs in the background. I can't say whether or not it's intrusive or resource hungry.

NOD32 is incredibly lightweight. It's a great scanner too and got an especially nasty infection off my PC with no damage. The price is up there, but it's worth it.

go with nod32, incredibly effective and light on resources. I would recommend it to all gamers

oooooooooook. that clears it all up then thanks!

care to explain HOW?
the only secure way to stop spyware or anything intrusive is become a better user. do things outside of the scope of "better user" use and you probably need it. personally I never use antivirus, but I stick to reputable sites and never download on my gaming rig. I've only been infected a few times, but its been from lan use. avast seems quite good and free. mind you, if I only had 1G ram I'd turn it all off gaming. if its always running outside of gaming its pointless anyway

also never use any antivirus nonsense and no problems.

a good software firewall + avoiding shady porn/warez sites = little threat.

scan for spyware every now and then to clean up the tracking cookies and such.

another nod to NOD32!!!.

Play games, install games, surf the we all with absolutely no noticeable performance loss. Small memory usage small system tray icon and no obtrusive update message.

NOD32. See networking forum for multipage forum wars over why you should/shouldnot use AV. It's quite exhaustive.

Ever been to ZALMAN's website? Their website tried to install a virus on my PC a couple of months ago, they are a reputable business. If I didn't have antivirus installed, it would have installed and I would have never known. No matter how careful you are, you're still open to attack.

this antivirus software you are seeking does not exist.

and i also never use any firewall and whatnot and have had no problems as well.

Just giving you an alternative...

Sure, it's common sense, don't go to questionable websites, don't open unexpected email, don't use internet explorer. Never had a virus, I've had spyware and browser hijackers but they are cake to get rid of

I agree that is how I run mine. I think I got more viruses and stuff when I did have AV.
Well actually, only time I got a virus was when I went to some free keygen site or w.e that site is :p.

I hated NOD32. It would constantly make my hard drive busy.

I use Kaspersky. It's a great program where you set and forget much like Norton but it does a better job and less resource hog.

Avast.

Has a neat option of checking for full-screen applications (games) and supresses popups such as: "Updated Virus Definition" etc.

Lightweight as well.

The only gripe I have with anti virus providers such as AVG's non-free products or NOD32 is they charge a yearly subscription fee for virus definitions. Symantec Corporate is $50 per machine and does not. AVG free does not have spyware/adware protection, but it is excellent as an anti virus.

To be honest I've never had an issue with any AV I've tried causing any sort of noticeable performance decrease whether it be NOD32, AVG, Symantec, etc. Kaspersky is the only AV I've ever had an issue with. There are a couple threads dedicated to its issues with Vista, so I would avoid it if you are planning to use Vista. The issue is rather easily to duplicate with KAV installed.

AVG lets you try their software before you buy. ESET (maker of nod32) appears that they would if you contact a customer service rep, but then they probably bug you to death.

Good luck on your choice.

NOD32 does have a free trial available through the web page. You may have to sign a form... can't remember since I pay for it now.

I like NOD32 a lot because of its no frills straight to the point interface and scanning. I don't think I ever even notice it most of the time. Also besides the beta version of PC-Cillin at the time, it was the only other Antivirus that actually installed correctly when Vista went RTM.

I used to run Panda at one point in time and was quite happy with it, as it would detect exploits in e-mail, etc before there was detection for the viruses attached with them. Then they totally went apeshit with their anti-phishing e-mail detection. They would wipe out my e-mails coming from Ebay or Paypal and replace the text. Don't know if it is still like that, but it became bloated too.

Symantec is horrible... I keep trying to get my father to stop using it. He went from a P3 500 to a AMD X2 3800+ system and his system ran the about the same in XP because of the crap Symantec was doing to his system. He didn't learn his lesson of course and spent another $80 on the latest version of Systemworks.

Edit: Link to NOD32 trial: http://www.eset.com/download/index.php

Ah I missed that link, cool.

As for Symantec, I just want to clarify for the OP and others considering a different AV, that Symantec Corporate is an entirely different product from any Norton named product such as Systemworks. I agree that anything with Norton on the label is a poor choice.

Nod32 is not like other anti-viruses, it by default scans every file when it is called by the system. so for instance if you open a picture, it will scan it. It is proactive. if a appication calls a graphic, it will scan it.

Now this certainly cant be good for games. as everything the game calls will need to be scanned right then and there, this will and does tremendously slow down gaming performance.

so Nod 32 is not recommended. even thogh it is probably the best anti virus you can get.

I would just recommend using nod32, sav10, or kaspersky, these are by far the best of the best and then just disable nod32 or kaspersky while gaming.

Norton anti virus is horrible, thogh Symantec anti-virus which is very different that Norton is not bad, it is actually one of the best and highest used anti-ciruses in the corporate world.

QFT almost two years now as an [H] employee and a gamer, zero infections.

I use nod32 on one machine and avg on a few others.... Have not noticed any slowdowns or game/installer incompatibilities caused by either one..

AVAST FTW, amazing program, very low key, virus database updates are free too, commercial use program fully featured and free completely

I've tried Avast before NOD32 and I like NOD32 way better for previous reasons stated.

Disabling real-time scanning is just a click away in NOD32. (well, two clicks).

How is it 2007 and we still have people debating whether to run antivirus software or not?

Sure, my AV software never dings, but if it once saves my data or keeps me from picking up a keylogger it's more than worth whatever few clock cycles it may have sucked up over the years.

If you don't run AV software, please unplug you internet.
