Gabe Newell Is Doing An AMA Today

Why the constant fat jokes with him? His weight is of no concern and making fun of his appearance only cheapens your arguments. The real criticism should be around how they have basically ignored those of us who were fans and continue to provide no fan service to those of us who supported his company.
This argument holds no water. Valve owes nobody nothing.
EXAMPLE
My favorite restaurant makes the best Denver Omelette in the known underverse. If they were to take it off the menu, or quit serving breakfast all together they would still not owe me an omelette.
I have never understood the entitled gamer argument.

TLDR Either we'll eventually get HL3 from Valve, or we'll never get it (by the way, the notion that they "owe" making that game to their customers is quite a silly one). It's pretty much as simple and clear-cut as that.

Anyone else read that as "MMA"? Gabe gonna beat some ass. Hide yo' wife. Hide yo' wallet.

ITT: jealous fat-shamers. :p

That aside, if I had as much money as him I would just hire a personal nutritionist to cook healthy meals for me all the time.

I honestly could give two fucks about Half-Life 3. Whatever they could possibly produce would never live up to expectations at this point.

I am far more interested in a Portal 3, or maybe a TeamFortress 3, or even a Left 4 Dead 3. I think I see a pattern emerging here.

New Day of Defeat please.

You are completely correct.

Still, episode 3? Valve had made such a big deal about how they were changing the game development paradigm. The whole 'episodes' format was supposed to allow them to come out with new content quickly, they would have teams working on episodes in parallel so that they would come out on a frequent basis, Source was even modular so that they could upgrade the engine as they went. It was to be the greatest thing ever.
And then they left Ep 2 on a cliffhanger and never followed up.

At least Valve is no longer a one-trick pony making just Half-Life games for eternity.
Now they're a two-trick pony, selling other people's games and hats.
They'll never be a three-trick pony, Valve can't count to three.

Gonna go home now and play some non-Valve games on Steam.

Hard to say what Gabe is worth as most of wealth is probably what Valve is worth and since they're private it's hard know exactly what Valve is worth. I'm guessing that Valve is worth at least $10 billion on the open market, so yeah, he's doing ok.
Google search says $4,100,000,000.00, so... chaching! I'd be happy with $410,000 net worth.

screw him and screw valve -- give me HL3 or give me death. ;-)

It's been said that to live a truly decadent life, one needs $100 million USD, so on the unlikely chance that Gabe only has this amount, he's still rolling in dough.

He has a wife and two kids, so I don't think she'd be too happy to see that photo (or others of its kind).

IMHO Elon Musk has much better taste in the "physical characteristics of women" dept. Can't go too wrong with Justine Musk or Talulah Riley. ;)

ITT: jealous fat-shamers. :p

I want to talk shit and I can do it without being jealous. Yea, I'd love his money, but being a bit on the chubby side and making fun of it isn't jealousy. It's stating the facts. The dude hasn't seen his dick in decades.

I have no questions for the guy. Maybe what does he think about the new Netflix show...

Uh-huh, sure man, whatever... :p

Might surprise you but fat people can live rich, fulfilling lives like normal-sized people. Some richer than others, in this case...

I don't understand why people keep saying this as-if they are so high and mighty that on the off chance it does get announced and releases they won't be fucking gushing over it and excited as hell to play it, but then in front of others and online just talk more shit just b/c. I don't see how you could have played all the other Half Life games and pretend that you won't care if they were to announce another Half Life game. And honestly, peoples' expectations are their responsibility. If your expectations are soaring in the clouds and you get disappointed that's not Valve's fault; it's your fault for not keeping your expectations in check.

Tell that to everyone who shit on No Man's Sky.

I think I only finished Half-Life 2 and it's "episodes" because they were decently short. That said I've never had the slightest desire to play them again. I've never finished the first game despite owning 3 different iterations of it now (by the time I'm 8-10 hours in it gets insanely boring and I have better games to play with my time). On the other hand I liked Portal and loved Portal 2's single player campaign and it's co-op campaign. So, yeah, I'm a shitload more interested in another Portal sequel than I ever will be in Half-Life 3.

Probably not actually at his weight.

No problem being fat, but he's not fat, he's next level at this point and its dangerous.

He may have diabetes which has all kinds of health issues, he won't live as long, he won't have as much endurance for sexy time and severely limit positions, he'll feel hot all the time, and he may have sleep apnea which can contribute to already high blood pressure (meds aren't fun) and snoring with a feeling of being tired often unless he uses a very uncomfortable CPAP mask.

Its his life to live, but he really would live longer and happier IMO if he spent some money for a life coach to follow him around and give him pro-tips and motivation. *pretty thai girl coach slaps donut out of hand, inserts carrot into its place* "Mmmm, you like it huh fatty Master, mmmm".

That is quite an old pic, it looks like he has actually lost quite a bit of weight since then.

Regardless, those health issues you mentioned - sure, you are at a higher risk of them if you're overweight, but that doesn't mean you have them for sure.

No Man's Sky is a very shitty analogy. Half Life has a proven track record of being great games. It's not a coincidence they are lauded as the greatest PC games of all time. No Man's Sky pumped up their advertising to sell something that wasn't there but a untested developer and it failed. Still made a shit ton of money, but on false pretenses. There are no illusions like that when it comes to Half Life and never has been. Half Life took the world by surprise and changed PC gaming and story-based narratives for all time. Half Life 2 although being leaked and delayed multiple times released and not only met expectations, but exceeded them. Episodes 1 and 2 were also fantastic and there is no reason given that track record to think that Half Life 3 wouldn't be a great game, and based off the history of the series deserves the hype. But like I said, keep your expectations in check.

A better example is Duke Nukem Forever. Before it was actually released after being delayed for almost a decade people felt the same thing, although by that time it's turned into a big joke based off how many times it was delayed and remade in different engines and passed around to different teams of developers. But for me, I never expected anything out of DNF, played it and was pleasantly surprised. Had all the hallmarks of a Duke game, and other than those of us who wear rose-colored glasses when it comes to DN3D, DNF was basically the same game that looked better. I played DNF and enjoyed it. Was it great? No. But I kept my expectations in check, got on with my life playing other games, and then once it came around I played it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Would I play it again? Probably not, but it was still enjoyable if I just played the game on its own merits and that's important. Even Mass Effect 3; Soooooo many people were pissed off at that game expecting some grand finale, but I could care less. I enjoyed the game for what it was and moved on. Peoples' expectations get too high and then they end up dissappointed whether it's games or anything in life; especially relationships with other people. Expect others to be or do certain things and expect to get burned.

I can't believe we hired this man at one point. He helped produce Windows 1.0, 2.0 and 2.1. He left before 3.0. He's got a thing for not going any further than 2.

Uh-huh, sure man, whatever... :p

I don't think weight really comes into play with his fortune. The guy earned his money and deserves it. Great guy.

Just makes Cartman look anorexic. :)

What about the porn star Ron Jeremy? Am I jealous of the guys dick? Nope. I can still make fun of that ugly mug and beer belly.

What about Megan Fox? Her huge ass Botox lips. Am I jealous? Would I kill for a body like that? Well.... maybe. I wouldn't leave the bedroom.

who will die of bad health first before their final song is released? George RR martin or GabeN

A waste of what could have been a good AMA.

Thanks for posting the above DPI. looking through a reddit thread is mind numbing.

Isn't it obvious by now that HL3 is waiting for VR to mature enough to make it a feasible game? Just like HL2 came out during that leap in gfx tech.

Newelll is an asshat, give us HL3 and make HL4 VR. sheesh.

in return you get my money and a crap ton of it, that's how this works.

This has been a thought of mine for a while, VR seems to be Gabe's thing at the moment. Not really sure how HL would translate to VR.

I would wager that most of the fat jokes stem from the fact he/they HAVE ignored us and the outward appearance is that he's sat on his ass resting on his laurels for 10 years just kind of being fat/rich. I don't know too much about him, but the tidbits/vibe I get is that he's so rich and just kind of doesn't give a shit about any of the stuff we like him for anymore (Half life being the main one)

I can't blame him though, if I was worth 4.1 billion dollars I wouldn't feel bad doing whatever the hell I wanted... only difference though anytime I was sad or depressed I'd jump in one of my 7 Ferrari's instead of wolfing down a pizza.

Edit: my personal beef (hah food) with the guy is that I bought into the Half Life episodes bullshit, and then they just stopped making them... way to fuck me out of a story and my money.

Didn't someone awhile ago make a point where most of Valve's games were purchases/acquisitions of other people's ideas rather than an in-house creation? (That is, they hired someone with a good game/idea to expand upon it as a Valve game, rather than Valve just creating a property from nothing). At this point, it would make sense to do the same for their future games and VR. No one's quite made that killer app for VR yet. And the people who are the first are usually not the people remembered. It's the people who see greatness from others and use their ideas and expand upon them as their own who usually benefit. It makes sense at this moment in time for Valve not to release anything which most likely would not be as successful as it could be.

That is how Valve has been since the beginning. Outside of Half Life I don't think there has been a single IP that they created themselves. Counter Strike, Day of Defeat - both mods turned retail. Same with Team Fortress. Portal? Hired the devs making it. L4D? Turtle Rock. HL1 Blue Shift, CS GO? Largely contracted out. Even DOTA was more or less based off of a mod for another game. I suppose TF2 was different enough from the original that it can count as a unique Valve designed experience, but then we're still only at two different series.

"want = owed generation" covers a lot of behavior. Existed before Millennials, but has definitely peaked with them.

I want ultima online back to 1999 :( that is the only reason i would like time travel.
