Question about the new Gigabyte GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI and SAS/SATA ports.

On this link here: http://www.tonymacx86.com/142-gigabyte-silently-launches-two-new-x79-motherboards.html the article says,

"The other new model is the GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI which isn't a direct replacement for the GA-X79-UD5, nor is it actually using the X79 chipset at all. Instead, this is something of a consumer friendly workstation board which is built around the Intel C606 chipset. What does this mean in practical terms? Well, if you can afford to invest in an LGA-2011 compatible Xeon processor, then you get an extra eight (!) SAS/SATA 3Gbps ports as well as four extra lanes of PCI Express 3.0 bandwidth. None of these features will work without a Xeon CPU, so keep this in mind if you're planning on getting this board."

Does that mean if i pair it with a Core i7-3930K I won't be able to use them? Can someone please clarify.

I just bought this board and putting an i7 3930k worked flawlessly, not to mention it also runs at 3.8Ghz compared to my current Asrock X79 board which maxes out at 3.5Ghz. Though Gigabyte should put a CPU support list on their website for this board which they didn't.

But it's true that you can't use the eight SAS/SATA ports or the four extra lanes of PCIe 3.0 with that processor, right?

Well I'm using the board with an i7 3930k and everything seems to work fine. Not sure about PCI-E 3.0 though, because it never worked for me with my Asrock X79 board as well, isn't that a NVIDIA or Intel issue with X79? I noticed the SATA 3 speeds on my SSD are much better as well, I can reach up to 500MB read speeds and 200MB write speeds while my Asrock board did only half that speed, for some reason.

Also, I bought this board here:

Its an Australian store, I assume most of you guys are from the US.

How many of the SAS/SATA ports have you tried?

Well, the SATA 2 and 3 works, I tried one of the SAS ports on my SSD, it worked but it was slow, I think, I didn't really had enough time to try them all. I'll have to get back to you on that one but so far the board works well.

Where did you buy this board? Amazon and Newegg both were not showing it.

I'm from Australia but if your interested I bought it from here:

A couple of Australian retail stores are selling it. Don't know why its not available to you guys in the US, and normally we get hardware late here.

The lack of PCIe 3.0 support is an NVIDIA issue.

I ended up getting this board and it in fact does support all SAS and SATA ports without needing a Xeon processor. i ended up pairing it with a 3930k. Overall, it's a really stable board with some great features.

I think I am interested in this board for my server. heck of a price, and lots of storage on-board. Might make a nice AIO server if it supports vt-d .
