Wife's machine has a G4400. Doesn't quite make FarCry 5 playable....

I just can't bring myself to pay more for a used 6th/7th gen i3/i5 than a new 8th gen i5.

A new G4560 is $62.

Will the hyper-threading make a noticeable difference?

I don't know the answer to your question, although another post recently seemed to suggest that HT does indeed help these days.

My suggestion is to overclock it. I'm not sure how they fair compared to the g3258, but if they are anywhere near the same it will overclock very well and the increase might might save you a purchase.

May as well sell the board/CPU and pick up an 8G i5+H310 board

The thought had occurred to me.

But its basically seldom used, so if a $60 upgrade will be a noticeable improvement, I'd rather do that first.

I think it'll make a noticeable difference, however I'm sceptical that it will make it an enjoyable experience. I suspect whilst it'll be playable you'll get a fair amount of stutters still.

G4560 is essentially an I3-6100. 2 cores 4 threads and uses slightly better ram 2400 vs 2133, but gives up 200 MHz and AVX 2.0 instructions. No big loss for a gaming box. I would think it is an upgrade over a g4400.

May be able to sell the G4400 for $30 to $45 judging from ebay. Makes the swap cheaper.

Games seem to like the 4 threads a lot in the G4400 to G4560 video above

If only the G4560 was unlocked like the G3258...
