fx-53 vs.x2 4400+

i would just OC your 3800, though. no reason to get a 4400 if you already have a 3800...

The only thing I'd throw out there, more as a general comment than for the poster' specific question, is that "multitasking" means multiple programs that actually put some stress on the CPU. If that's what you are doing, the x2 is the winner by far.

But some folks run Word in one window, Internet Explorer in another, and listen to MP3s and think they need Hyperthreading or an x2 processor to survive. Yay marketing! :p

I suspect that alot of folks (not the OP, just talking in general) talk about "multitasking" when they really mean "futzing around with little crap that a single non-HT CPU could do standing on its head with 1,000,000 transistors tied behind its back." :D

Enough rambling on my part. Get the faster x2 (or overclock the one you've got) for the win.
