The 4TB WD My Book I bought last year had a Hitachi Deskstar 5K4000 inside. Surprise.

No way it'll have a black in it though, portable external drives are meant as mass storage/low performance devices so at best you'll find a WD Green in there, if they are even using their own hard drives.
 
A bit late, but for those wondering, the WDBFJK0040HBK-NESN has a WD40EZRX (WD Green) drive inside. The previous generation (WDBACW0040HBK-NESN) has a Hitachi Deskstar 5K4000 drive inside.

LOL. they aren't putting Blacks in their externals. its almost always the cheapest line they offer, since 99.99% of people won't know the difference
 
They use the green drives.

I have a 2 TB model. Even if you just remove the hard-drive from it, its a good price for a 4tb drive.
