So I recently swapped my monitor from 60hz to a VA panel 144hz Freesync. Tried both an RX 580 & Nvidia GTx 1070 & both just work.

Amazing how easy it is to get working. On top of that usind HDMI of video card out to monitor & monitor output to speakers worked with basically 0 issues.

Love this setup :)

Hardware
I7-4770k
32GB ddr3
Ubuntu 19.04
GTX 1070/RX 580
Kernel 5.0.0-13 IIRC
AOC 144hz Freesync VA Panel monitor (1080p)

Borderlands 2 & Borderlands the pre-sequel

GTX 1070 does seem significantly faster than the RX 580/8G. Lowest framerate on the RX 580 has been about 48fps. On the GTX 1070 lowest has been about mid 60s....64/65fps.

Nice makes sense the 1070 would be 15-20 fps faster... think all the benches I have seen both Linux and windows say that is about what to expect. Not counting the used market the 1070 is still quite a bit more expensive.... I mean the 1070 is hard to find new but you can pick up vega 56 and even 64s now and then for around what the 1070 last sold at. Where I am new the 1060 is still selling for more then the 580s.... at that price point AMD is clearly the better card.

At least with the AMD option your on open software, which in my option anyway make AMD the best Linux choice. :) (although for the right deal on a used 1070 or 1080 you might be getting a steal)

I've seen 1070's finish on ebay at sub $200 US shipped...then again used 580s are like $115 :)

I'm always to chicken to grab cards from ebay... but ya the pricing has been tempting.

The local store I tend to use today has a Gigabyte Vega 56 for $330 CND (which is better pricing then a lot of 56 ebay listings)... I was sort of thinking about it then I have to remember Navi is only a few months away and you have no time for hours of gaming till after that anyway. Resist. :)

Tempting.

According to phoronix anyway the 56 sits right between a 1660 ti and a 2060 (mostly in some games like hitman 56 pushes more fps then 2070)... Gigabyte versions of 1660ti and 2060 today 380 and 500.

Who knows depending how Navi shakes out perhaps I'll risk a ebay buy of a cheap vega or something. I've been lucky though our local computer shop has gotten some real aggressive buys the last year or so, have gotten some dirt cheap new cards.

So, this is one of those monitors that Nvidia decided to support with Freesync?

No official support on this monitor, but it works great. No tearing! There is an box in the "Advanced" properties of the nvidia utilit to enable G-sync on unsupported monitors. On top of that this is a VA panel model that only cost me $150. PIcture quality doesn't compare to my $550 1440p IPS monitor (Acer Predator) but it is more than passable.
