FreeBSD gets Intel 9xxx Wi-Fi support

Jun 10, 2015
Big news in the FreeBSD world:

One of the big complaints/drawbacks for FreeBSD, especially for desktop usage, was that it lagged behind in hardware support, specifically Wi-Fi. This changes quite a bit with this commit, as FreeBSD will now have support for Intel's current Wi-Fi chips.
I am not sure if this will make it to a 12.1-RELEASE update, but should be usable now with 13-CURRENT, and should make it to 12.1-STABLE in a couple of weeks.

For those unfamiliar with FreeBSD's versions, it can be compared to versions of Windows like this:
-RELEASE is the latest publicly supported version
-STABLE is like Windows Insider Slow Ring
-CURRENT is like Windows Insider Fast Ring
