OK, so I buy this dvd r/rw drive and I want to play some movies on it..

I pop one in and it turns out I need a dvd decodec to watch them. So i google the thing and then I learn that to obtain one I must pay money for it. Maybe I'm slightly mentally capped, but is there a decent FREE decodec out there for me to use?

Thanks.

You could try vlc (always surprises me how little processor usage this app uses during DVD playback. Or Media Player Classic and ac3filter for ac3 decoding.

edit: Oh yeah, the "de" in "decodec" is already handled by the term codec, either a COmpressor/DECompressor or COder/DECoder depending on which definition you want to accept as definitive.

Thanks, I'll check them out.. And it's also good to learn some new terms and how they should be used..

I second this. VLC is convienent, easy to use, and will play anything. Not to mention that the CPU usage is very low.
