I guess it's time for Google to pay up or pack up and get out of France. Does anyone know why companies like Google and Facebook even have offices in France?

French Finance Minister Michel Sapin on Tuesday ruled out striking a deal with Google over back taxes as the British government recently did with the U.S. internet giant. "French tax authorities do not negotiate the amount of taxes owed, there is a discussion underway about which rules apply, that's perfectly legitimate," Sapin told journalists on the sidelines of a finance sector conference.

let the french government run the search engines and have a populist revolt.

the french people do revolts well.

Wow.. politicians with some integrity. Wish the scum we have here in the UK couldn't be bought off so easily.

Same in the US. These tools want to ban encrypted phones, to make the populace more pliable to their will.

The French will change their tune once Google starts building it's own army :)

As for why Google is in France, it might have something to do with them being their 5th largest customer. It sounds like UK politicians are going to get an ass reeming over this, since the UK is Google's 2nd largest customer. Google has offices in just about every major country.

The EU will bring the tax hammer down on ALL US companies. You make money in the EU, you pay taxes in the EU - and without some illegal tax dodging arrangements like the one in Ireland. Simple.

Google should become a distributed autonomous company.

Where is your god now? :p

Which is pretty ridiculous. Simple basic flat tax across the earth would solve the problem. You make money in the US, France, where ever, you pay 5-8%. Simple. The EU just wants to rape companies because the need the tax monies to keep their socialist regimes in place. Retire at 50 so the guberment can't take care of you.

Why, just why do people talk about taxes as if something decoupled from the economy.
It's really fascinating. Good governance and talking care of all/most people in all that entails is not part of the economy itself, but some kind of parasitical consequence of the awesome efficiency of selling shit to each other. Incredible.
Good on France go get the fuckers or kick them out, same thing US should be doing.

It is every citizens obligation to pay as little in taxes as possible. Companies are people, therefore they are obliged to pay as little in tax as possible. This isn't that hard to understand. If you can get everyone to pay a little, you get way more in return. Let's stop trying to fuck over rich people and companies just so we can give it to those who never earner or worked for it.

And your solution to the problem would be a global government?

Google should have to pay the taxes owed.

They don't or shouldn't owe the taxes. Taking advantage of loopholes should not oblige you to pay "back taxes" when a country decides to change the system or the interpretation of that system.

No global government. The US should change the effective date for everything to 5-8% and issue a nonpenalty proclamation for any overseas profits returned to the US. Then the companies would refile as US entities, and only be obligated to pay the US rate, because of the rule change that allows them to book all profits in the US, even if the have a presence in another country. A presence in some other shit hole country doesn't mean the company is based there. The only thing that dictates where tax is paid is the filing country. Thus the US retains all of the tax revenue and collects way more than they current do even though the rate is much lower. If company wants to register somewhere else, they can but the US collects a penalty for the company leaving.

If there is no global govt. then your global tax idea wouldn't work.

Its why a Tobin Tax has never been implemented.

Also Flat Taxes are dumb since they're heinously regressive unless you implement a ton of exemptions and subsidies and if you have to do that for such a supposedly "simple" tax system then why bother?

Negative. It's right, not an obligation.

Companies are people

Nobody bought that when Mitt Romney was pitching it, not sure why you think you might be better at selling it. You know what makes a person? A birth certificate. Companies don't have birth certificates. Companies are absolutely not people.

Although they are not a person in the biological sense the SCOTUS has ruled (and correctly in my opinion) that these business entities still retain many of the rights of a person (right to free speech, right to trial, right to own property, etc) ... corporations are not just some cash cow that can be milked every time the government wants a Latte (at least they shouldn't be)

Very well stated and I completely agree.

But the US ruling companies are people has no relevance to France, a sovereign country with its own set of rules.
