Foxconn Will Drain Lake Michigan to Make LCD Screens

Umm yeah exactly, hence why I have a problem with them bypassing regulations and permits in this case among the many other issues. That doesn't seem to be what "we" are talking about at all though, that seems to be "Well it's happens all over so who cares this time." - so the exact opposite.

Lol, great discussion as usual.

I don't know anything about water quality either, I just run all my drains & sewage into these and it just seems to work.

Still nothing from you but attacks and FUD.

Make fun of all you want. Get your chuckles in.

Because climate change is a real thing, within 50 years there will be wars over water.

Eventually, even republicans will understand.

Good thing I live less than a mile from 21% of the world's fresh water reserves. I better start on my well now so I can sell water to the plebs for $100/gal. Also, it is super easy to desalinate ocean water, and you can even do it at home with solar power. HAHA

The fresh water is used to dilute the toxic waste so they can dump it back into the lake. If it is diluted enough they are allowed to dump many tons of toxic chemicals.

This is exactly how the dirty nuclear industry operates to NRC guidelines.

Wars over water....when we will supposedly have far more water?

Anyone have an idea how many gallons of water are in Lake Michigan ? Care to guess how many days it would take for them to turnover the entire lake ?

Try 1.3 E 15 gallons and 500,000 years. Idiocy on display, as usual, from "environmentalists"

Oh, is that right ? How much "toxic waste" do you think the typical nuclear power plant discharges ?

Another hint for the clueless: For most plants - ZERO. And when they do discharge water, the actual radioactive content of that water, sampled BEFORE dilution, is lower than the standard for drinking water.

Try not to spread your ignorance.

Membrane RO desalination (the most affordable way to do it) requires approximately 70 atmospheres of pressure. I don't know where you live, but hardware that handles that type of pressure isn't something you attain easily.

The cheapest way to do it at home is with a fresnel lens or concave set of mirrors to boil & distill the ocean water. No need for 70 atmosphere containment, lol.. Plenty of youtube tutorials show success with nothing but scrap parts used. I actually did it back in high school for a science project.

Nice.

No one cares about the opinions of arrogant pricks either, but that doesn’t stop you, now does it?
Nice, I just love it when people miss joking, I wuv the internets.
Or are you offended by my user name, I get that a lot, people see I'm an Atheist and they get upset.
Do you need a doll so you can point where I made you hurt?

Just to let you know, this emotion-con " :p " also doubles as j/k, aka joking.

God, I swear, if I had a dime every time someone calls an Atheist "arrogant"...... cha cha, ching!

Considering that I’m an Atheist also, that had nothing to do with my reply.
Adding an emoji doesn’t give you a blank check to repeat stereotypes, you would not have used the “N” word or made a smart ass remark about the LGBT community emoji or not, and gotten away with it, now would you?

You went for the low hanging fruit and got called out for it, enough said.

The Quality of the water you drink actually affects future generations so basically we are all fucked here in WI. China is so damn polluted it doesn't even matter anymore chinese water is probably some of the worst stuff out there. My dad is a active Great Lakes fisherman in MIchigan either the Asian Carp were going to ruin Lake MIchigan or a LCD plant where people use the panels for porn and videogames and buying stuff off amazon. My brother actually works with the intake outake water at a nearby nuke plant.

Ah the perils of trying to get people to understand a complex system of simple rules. Most get the simple rules, but think you can keep making alterations and everything will be fine, because the complex system seems to just keep going.... For a while that is for sure, but the problem is it is ' for a while'. Now a days, no joke i read environmental news to see how fast the planet is ending.. its gets muddled a lot, i know we are screwed, i want to know how bad and how fast, but everything reads tempered down to me, there info missing in saying how serious.

Oh cry me a river, sing me a song, do you need a pack of tissue, do you cry when Comedy Central airs, I hope you don't step outside because you're in for a shock son.
Bloody hell, I'm starting to change my mind about Donald Dump winning instead of Hillarity Clinton, hopefully DD hardens uMerikan's balls.
Come on Foxconn, please poison our water and make our deaths a quick one, because I didn't eat enough lead paint chips as a kid.

Re: LCD video.....

New and un-used or get out.

Once a prick, always a prick.

Lake Michigan has 1 Quadrillion gallons of water, so at 7 million gallons of water per day thats... 142,857,142 days to drain it.... or 391,389 years. I live in wisconsin, our water tables are high, and we get a LOT of rain. Trust me, there is no water shortage here.

I talked to the guy who does this for a living at AMD's chip plant in Saratoga. That's exactly how they do it.
I am sure you did, because everyone is just dumping chemicals into water while the EPA goes "well its diluted so nothing we will or can do."

Dilution is the solution to pollution.

At least that's what the guy running our local waste water treatment plant said when I was in school. - No I'm not joking.

Earth has always had climate changes and will continue to have climate changes even if mankind did not exist.

I am sure we would all know if at some point in history it got really cold and everything froze. They would have given it some type of name like cold age or something like that. Where is your name for such an age? Why have we never heard of it? ;)

There were only five major ice ages. I wonder how many of those are blamed on modern man.

Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources has triggered environmentalists after approving a plan that will allow Foxconn to drain 7 million gallons of water a day from Lake Michigan to produce LCD screens. While some portion of that water will be returned to the lake (the rest will be gone due to evaporation), some fear that it will be contaminated with metal particles.

Environmentalists are also concerned that the decision will set a new precedent allowing the fresh water to be used for predominantly commercial purposes, instead of as drinking water. “If we allow this to happen, it’s going to happen all over the basin, with other states and then it’s going to be the thirsty states and nations to come,” said Jennifer Giegerich, the government affairs director for the Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters.
So for the hippies that suck at math and are afraid of big numbers, it will take 2,348,337 years for Foxconn to drain lake Michigan, assuming no water is ever replaced from rainfall (0% probability).

Math:
Lake Michigan = 6,000,000,000,000,000
Foxconn usage = 7,000,000 / day
6,000,000,000,000,000 / 7,000,000 / 365 = 2348336.594911937

Yeah 2.3m years to drain and probably only 10 years before unexplained cancer clusters start showing up in the towns near the factory thanks to returning a portion of it back to the lake.

Earth has always had climate changes and will continue to have climate changes even if mankind did not exist.

Correct but the Earth's climate is like a self healing Jenga tower. Changes occur as natural disasters like volcanic eruptions pull out blocks but over time those pulled out blocks get healed and get put back so the tower won't topple over. On the other hand though, man is the ultimate natural disaster in that it is not like a single catastrophic event that happens then it's done with for a few centuries and then allows the environment to heal or rebalance itself. Man kind is a constant puller of environmental Jenga blocks from the tower. We pull them faster than the healing process can repair and just like a Jenga tower at some point it'll be too late and that Jenga Tower will collapse.

Yeah, but can they make a display technology that people actually want instead?

Came to say exactly this :D

Where's that OLED replacement tech that gets brighter, refreshes faster, and doesn't degrade over time at?

No coincidence they choose Lake Michigan, its the only Great Lake that Canada doesn't get a say in, as its entirely within the US (unlike the others). Anyways, this sounds like a terrible plan unless tightly monitored, but with Republicans at the helm of all the neighboring states, you guys can look forward to a Lake Michigan that's as polluted as Flint's water supply in less than a generation.

But how would they do that without Democrats in charge?

Earth is more resilient than you give her credit for. If you really cared about her climate you would live off the grid with no electricity at all, palm leaves for shelter, rocks for hunting and sticks for fishing. Until you change your lifestyle you are nothing but a hypocrite who shouldn't tell people how to live their lives.

And for the anti-hippies (sorry I got nothing...) that are really focused on raw numbers here's a depth map
(picture too big, don't want to flood the thread) click it if you want to see it.
https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/greatlakes/lakemich_cdrom/images/area2hi.gif

Now you'll notice the deep red around the perimeter of the lake and the very dark blue occupying most of the inside part. So as we all know (hopefully) the water depth isn't constant, there's the water near the shoreline which is not as deep as the interior, and the interior is where most of the volume is... but what about near the shoreline? Well just for some handwavy numbers because I don't feel like getting too much into researching this too much for what effectively is an internet dick swinging contest if you take the average depth 10 feet from shore is 10 feet (which in all actuality is probably a HUGE over estimate), Lake Michigan has 1640 miles of shoreline.
1640 miles x 5280 feet x 10 feet wide x 10 feet deep = 866 million cubic feet which is about 6.5 billion gallons of water
6.5 billion / 7 million / 365 is about 2.5 years. Now if you say the entire shoreline of Lake Michigan will recede by 10 feet in less than 3 years that's pretty damn drastic... hell Green Bay alone would shrink even more drastically since a large portion of it is less than 10 feet deep. Now yeah this is making the assumption that zero rivers/rain/etc refill it, but it does illustrate a point.

You probably would have would have been better off of an argument of saying the factory would use the equivalent water of 70-100k people, which sounds like a lot but isn't huge.

You'd also have to calculate in draining part of Lake Superior and part of Lake Huron as well, since they're attached. (to about 30ft depth for Lake Superior, and about 250ft for lake Huron, if not more) ;)

Chicago drains the lake to the tune of about 561 BILLION gallons per year. or 1.5 BILLION day a year because they are too lazy and cheap to treat their shit, so they dump it in a river and have it flow to the Mississippi.

But you fools are worried that about 7 million a day might get used by a plant, some of that treated and returned?

Population area of about 10 million people, versus a single company that is strictly doing it for profit? Yeah totally relatable.

If you are worried about pollution why are you focused on the a problem not even in the same ball park?

Chicago diverts about 214 gallons per every 1 that Foxconn will, and that's not accounting for how much water Foxconn will return.

And it diverts that water because its literally dumping shit into it.

Pretty sure I learned this in like 6th grade that the great lakes have a HUGE impact on the microclimates in the region. Draining 7MM gal out of it daily is bound to have a HUGE impact.

And now that I've said HUGE twice I can now see why the Trump administration is all over this.

Not correct. 7 million gallons = .07% of total lake surface area.

And while 2.7 million gallons won't be DIRECTLY returned (because of evaporation), look up "Lake Effect".
You get unstable weather systems hitting the stable air over the lake and dumping moisture.

As such, this effect will likely help the evaporated water return to the lake. Merely via indirect return.

The current administration will always support corporate use of natural resources before preserving natural resources for all citizens.

Is that so... the Clintons sold 20% of our citizens Uranium to Russians long before Trump was even a thing... and it goes on and on.... with others.
