In a report from Nikkei, Foxconn wants to reduce it's dependency on Apple because of weakening smartphone demand, and plans to expand into the manufacture of semiconductors for displays, and professional quality cinema cameras. Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou told reporters in Taipei after the company's annual employee party "We will make cameras that will shoot professional-quality films in 8K resolution but at only a third of current prices and a third of current camera sizes."

The article also states that Gou said he has been in talks with RED Digital Cameras about forming a joint venture or partnership to produce affordable cameras. While I can see Foxconn's need to expand, I think the high end digital cinema camera market may be a bit too niche to really bolster profits.

Foxconn's move is part of an effort to build a corporate ecosystem related to displays and videos. Gou said his company is basing its strategy on the display manufacturing facilities it already operates and its 2016 acquisition of Sharp's semiconductor business, which will be expanded this year.

"weakening smartphone demand"

Finally. Maybe, just maybe there is hope for humanity. Until the bot overlords decide there isn't

My guess is it's just like the PC market and a 5-10% increase in performance isn't enough to make people want to drop $1,000. Current phones are plenty powerful enough to do everything that a phone can do with them. Aside form weird aspect ratios and mounting 9 cameras on the back, I really don't see much of a huge tech leap in the smartphone market for a while, meaning less people upgrading.

I've been trying to convince myself to spend drop $700 into upgrading my $150 Zuk Z2 that I bought a year ago... but I can't, there's nothing that the new phones do that mine doesn't.

If they really wanted to jump into a nearly immediate market of profits with extreme demand they'd move to ram/nand production. I've yet to hear of decreased demand for them.

Except that's not something they can do immediately. Foxconn doesn't have the capability to start producing chips and they'd be years away from creating a fab to do such.

Their best bet was to buy Toshiba (which they did try to last year), but can't do that anymore.

Don't ask me who is going to work at thw Wi Foxconn plant the plant should have expand to something else rather than LCDS.

Dear Foxconn,
Please make 80-120" OLED 4k HDTVs for under $1k. That's something that you'll sell a crapload of.

Thanks,
BP

Maybe they are assuming the high end pro camera tech will drop to pro-sumer then consumer level in a few years.

Not a real stretch. With the importance of cameras in phones, it could give them a leg up in producing components for the broader cell phone market.
