AMD just sent over an email telling us to check out the new Forza Horizon 4 demo, which contains a benchmark mode. It is a 28GB download and available free through the Microsoft store. AMD tells us that "Radeon Graphics take the lead." It does cite the Vega 64 beating the 1080 at all resolutions, which is certainly believable considering how we have seen the Vega 64 and the 1080 exchange blows in the past. You can check out the Benchmark Guide PDF at this link. If nothing else, it will provide you with some fun geek reading material.

Low-level APIs like DirectX 12 allow GPUs to deliver faster performance with lower overhead, and Radeon graphics cards are taking full advantage to deliver more consistent frames, reduced latency and more power efficiency.

AMD worked closely with Playground Games to give Radeon players the best performance in this demo, with the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 graphics card beating the GeForce GTX 1080 at 1080p, 1440p, and native 4K.

Here’s an early look at how Radeon RX Graphics handle Forza Horizon 4 at 1080p, 1440p, and native 4K;
* RX Vega 64 ran 12-20% faster than the GTX 1080
* RX Vega 56 ran 2-12% faster than the GTX 1070Ti
* RX Vega 56 ran 13-22% faster than the GTX 1070
* RX 580 ran 12-16% faster than the GTX 1060 (6GB)
* RX 570 ran 46-58% faster than the GTX 1050Ti

28GB for a demo... HOLY SHIT

That's some impressive results from AMD, for sure.

how about 1080Ti ?
Why bother comparing it to a card that is 2x the price of Vega 64?

The engine the Forza games runs on is phenomenal to say the least. There are no other games I can run at 4K/60+ (supersampled) with my 1070. And they look great.

Looks like they did a good job with the PC version of this game. Should be fun!

Just ran this on my 1080 gtx OC to 2000mhz @ 4k and it only dipped under 60fps once. Thats with everything turned wide open. Game looks amazing. Really enjoyed the last one. I'll be picking this one up also..

Given the number of console ports, I'm a bit surprised we don't seem AMD be this competitive more often.

Makes sense to me, as this is an Xbox One game, which has an AMD chip in it, if I'm not mistaken? So of course it is by default optimized for AMD already.

Interesting in one of the pages, AMD state that the 1080 and 1080 Ti have the same score? Something's fishy. I also didn't saw the drivers they were using, as for example there could be driver issues as Ryan Shrout discovered for the Threadripper 2 gaming tests.

Yeah, was just looking at that and looks pretty fishy. 1070Ti and 1080Ti are both slower than 1080+Vega at 1080p, 1080/1080Ti draw at 1440p, and Vega 64 is still faster than 1080Ti at 2160p.

Edit: Might be because of the HDR hit for Nvidia? I dunno.

I’ll wait for new drivers from both sides before judging something. Wasn’t it early Forza 7 that Vega 64 beat the 1080 ti, till a driver/game update?

System configuration, including driver versions, are on page 15. I also find it odd, though, especially given that the 1080 Ti is slower than the 1070 Ti at 1920x1080. Must have something to do with how the benchmarks is calculating the numbers. Is the GPU supposed to be the final combined number?

Yeah, something's fishy and this driver of nV should be good. But not sure if it's game ready for the Forza. Anyway I'll wait an year for the game at least. I am still pissed off from the way forza horizon 3 works..if you want a car? go purchase car pack nothing that you have the ingame money. Freak'em.

I ran the benchmark on my system.... CPU limited.

Or more like just not using the resources properly? I locked my 1700 in at 3.7ghz and the results didn't really change that much. In both instances, CPU load never exceeded ~70%.

This was a known bug for a very long time in the previous game.

Players may experience loss of sound and possible inability to progress in the game if they 'Disable all enhancements' under Sound > Playback tab > Select your playback device > Properties > Enhancements.
I didn't touch any settings.

AMD numbers on an AMD optimized console port in an AMD guide showing AMD take a small lead. Curious how much the 1080 leads based on the NVIDIA numbers? ;)

looks like shit. i mean as shitty as NFS
it's Midtown madness meets need for speed without cops.. yes it's more arcadey than forza motorsports but it's also fun as hell driving through the streets just like it was in the 90's/early 2000's driving through san fransisco in Midtown Madness 1/2.

you are correct, nvidia did have issues in forza 7 with drivers which were fixed a couple weeks later. i'd expect performance on nvidia cards to go back to where they should be when the official release happens. my guess is microsoft didn't give them a heads up on when the demo was releasing so they didn't have them ready.

A question for those among you who are more versed in the GPU technology than I am. Why does AMD focus on this level of "future proof"? It's nice to see when the technology is finally used they gain an advantage but isn't that level of thinking always going to shoot oneself in the foot considering how long it takes for things like dx12 adoption to happen?

AMD's GCN Architecture was designed as a GPGPU solution for "one-size-fits-all" compute tasks. It can compute any sort of task you throw at it, but it's getting a bit old at this point. Nvidia's CUDA arch is similar, but it focuses more on game-related tasks, hence why there are specialized cores for AI, RT, etc.

AMD cards are slowly looking better. But when I factor in Nvidia OC ability, even the AMD wins become draws.

Good for AMD. It's good to see them get a win. I do believe that Vega is quite powerful, perhaps just as powerful as a GTX 1080 Ti. It's held back by software and optimization like most things AMD.
