Forum slowing down

Greetings...

I have noticed that the [H]ardForum has been slowing down lately. It seems directly connected with something called altfarm.mediaplex.com which I assume is the AD server that the [H] uses correct? The problem seems to be the connection to that server or perhaps the server itself becoming overloaded with requests. I think you guys need to make some changes here to speed up things, though since I am not privy to the goings on here I don't know what it is. ;) However, what about having the AD's placed on the [H] servers so there are no problems with connection difficulties? :D

I havent noticed any problems, Are you using an older machine? I think there was something about this before and some people using older stuff, OSs or something, were having the problem. I dont quite remember

I am using an AMD 2400+ OC to 2.3 Ghz on an A7N8X-Dlx with 1 Gb of Corsair 3200 XMS Pro. So I think I'm using fairly modern stuff ;) I also have a DSL line and am using MS Professional SP1 with .NET Framework. I am using FireFox :( Justchecked with IE and it seems to work just fine, but when I go back to FireFox it keeps hanging. Are there any known problems associated with FireFox and the [H] forum?

Yes there is. The New Egg ad doesn't like FireFox and it slows your PC down. It makes firefox take up like 100 MB of memory and slows your system down. You should block the ad if you can otherwise, use IE.

Run a search on it, I'm sure you'll find something.

The search function is your friend

new newegg ad eats 100% of proc

newegg banner?

NewEgg Ad == CPU Killer

This is a problem with Firefox, not the forum or its ads. Check which ad is on the page when it happens. Your best bet is when you see that ad, leave and come back to the forum and a different ad should be at the top. Just don't be tempted to block the ads. They are what pay for the bandwidth and make this forum free. That and you'll get instantly ban by MajorDomo.

Im using FF and everything is just fine. but im also running SP2,
As am I, and I have no problem with CPU usage or RAM when viewing the [H]

Less than 10% CPU use (typically 2-5%) and ~25,000K RAM used here, 2GHz Athlon XP, XP SP2, Firefox 1.0.4, FlashPlayer 7. That's actually pretty darn good for a website with flash ads, and I applaud the admins for keeping the ads unobtrusive. You could have to deal with pop-ups, 'this session sponsored by' click thrus, etc.

Running this forum costs money - it requires really beefy server(s), quite a bit of transfer every month, and a pretty large staff to keep it going. However, none of these costs are passed on to members. I'd suggest making sure all of your relevant software is up to date to ensure the best possible surfing experience, not just here at the [H] but everywhere.

The forums never ran slow, but today they seemed it. Posting responces took about 10 seconds before finally going through. This is with 3Mb DSL and loading other pages fine in tabs while waiting.

I doubt it's the flash ads for me, since they've been showing up before and no problems occured.

Yeah I sometimes have to sit and wait for mediaplex to do its thing for a few moments before the forums pop-up as well so its not just him. FF user BTW. Any way to make the forums load then try to place the ads in their place so that we can at least browse the froums while the ads load?

Rare it slows down on me but when it does theres ALOT of people on.

Yeah, no kidding. I'm very glad the [H] doesn't do the shit other sites do and would like to pass on a thanks to Kyle for that!

Here's a thought on why it runs slow for some and not others.....the connection to the servers that serve up the ads. Some people have good connections and some have bad connections.

try typing CMD in the run prompt...then typing "ping altfarm.mediaplex.com" to see what your ping is to that server...

my ping is 90-100ms

mine is showing 0ms, hmmf, didn't think that was possible, maybe my rig is the mediaplex server :D

All of my rigs at one point or another had a problem with the mediaplex ads, sometimes real bad. Somewhere along the line i miust have tweaked stuff because i rarely have issues now.
