For around 75$ would a 2.1 sound better or 5.1?

For around 75$ what would sound better? More expensive 2.1 speakers or cheaper 5.1 speakers?
 
The sound card or whatever related output hardware influences this a little as well, but as a general rule you usually want the higher-quality speakers unless you have tin ears (which isn't necessarily a bad thing in itself).
