im going to be flashing my WRT54G V2.2 with the DD-WRT i have been meaning to do this for sometime, im just planning to follow the instructions found here http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation is that the right place to follow and is there anything i should know before i do this?

i dont really have a reason i just want to see what its all about. i am however very interested in the URL redirecting you can do, so when people are connected to me AP if they open up a web browser i can send them to my own web page, im going to be building a file server and when people connect to my router with the DD-WRT firmware they get sent to my webpage wich has information about my file server.

I've flashed a few routers so far, and I used those very same instructions to flash my WRT54G v.3 to DD-WRT. Under 'uploading the firmware where it says:

7. The router will take a few minutes to upload the file and flash the firmware. During this time, the power light will flash.
8. A new page will open, wait about 5 minutes before clicking "Continue".
9. If flashed successfully you will now be at the DD-WRT web interface.

It really does mean wait 5 minutes. It may take even longer, but not 'hours' time. I completely disconnected the router from my cablemodem to decrease the chance of error.
I also opened the pages I thought I'd need in multiple tabs of firefox before I started at it so I'd have troubleshooting info in case things went south.

You need to flash it with the micro version first and then the full version in order to get rid of the Linux firmware. That is your biggest concern.

I have yet to check their site. Is there a v5 version floating around out there?

Either way, you still need to RTFM ;)

Looks like you need to reread the 1st post. he's got a v2.2 router. so he can flash straight to the standard firmware, without having to do your intermediate mini firmware step.

I did RTFM, hence the linkage.

Nothing like ignoring the details so you can feel 'right' about something, eh? ;)

Flashing a v5 requires a JTAG cable. I purposely looked for a v3 or lower as they can run a full featured (std) kernel. The newer revisions have had functionality removed, and the RAM and flash rom have been reduced in size.

"DD-WRT Micro is the only version that works on these neutered machines."

I never said you did not read the updating firmware part, but the RTFM is for knowing all the things that are in DD-WRT and what each section does. There a ton more options in DD-WRT than the standard firmware. You should read what each does so you know it more fully. I never intended my message to say, "You're and idiot for asking questions you fekking n00b. RTFM before you come to the forums." I never once said that.

Thanks for doing the groundwork for me. I guess I'll just fire up an old system collecting dust and install some version of Radius on it.
