Five Things That Make Rage The Best Id Game Ever

Rage may already be the best Id game ever. After spending three hours exploring, I found that the things that separated this game from previous Id titles (aside from sunlight and a diversity of colors) were the little touches that add personality and a sense of artistry to the game. I've listed my five favorites below.

1) Jackass Vehicle Physics

Driving plays a big role in Rage. You'll be driving around from town from one enemy hideout to another -- just watch out for sudden stops. During my time with the game, I looked away for a brief second to compare my PC build with the Xbox 360 build beside it (they look damn near identical), and turned back just in time to see my ATV hit a rock. My character went flying off the vehicle and met an untimely demise on a canyon wall. It was a nice little touch that had me chuckling. I respawned seconds later right next to the ATV.

2) Fieldgoals

The Rage world is peppered with little touches. I tried to keep an eye out for anything that looked like a goal post; there are three scattered throughout the world. If you can manage to fling your avatar through them -- using the vehicle physics mentioned above -- you'll find the game has rewards in store for you.

3) The Best Shotgun since Doom

Doom's shotgun was sublime, only rivaled by its double barreled cousin from Doom II. Nothing was more satisfying then lining a shot up just right, and dropping a zombie soldier or an imp in one hit. The secret was some combination of the quick kills it allowed and the satisfying sound it made with each blast. The shotgun in Rage feels like a worthy follow-up. The highlight of my three hours spent with the game was running through an enemy hideout and taking out each enemy one shot at a time. From the damage to the sound, Rage's shotgun is near perfect.

4) Enemies Will Get Scared and Run Away

How many times have you taken out a wave of enemies in a game, only to have a lone and apparently suicidal straggler continue to attack you after you've dispatched his buddies easily? I know that if I was an evil henchman, I'd think twice about continuing to fight the badass who just killed six of my friends without breaking a sweat. The crazed enemies in Rage apparently concur with my tactical assessment. If you're truly kicking ass (perhaps with that amazing shotgun), the enemies will turn tail and run. Most of them regain their composure after they calm down behind some distant cover, so you'll have to tangle with fleeing enemies eventually.

5) Amazing Animations

During my room-to-room shotgun massacre that I enjoyed so much, an enemy surprised me by popping out of cover three feet in front of me. My initial shot missed because the goon didn't just rotate out of cover like so many Call of Duty wack-a-moles -- he lost his balance, recovered using his free hand, and stumbled backwards.

The enemies in Rage move in ways that you've never seen before. Wounded enemies will react to their wounds, stumble to the ground, and even play dead in the hopes that you don't further injure them. The game feels so much more tense, because you never quite know whether an enemy is really dead. Best to shoot them just in case.

I haven't really been looking at Rage, but this stuff is certainly interesting...

It's a bonus that the PC version looks the same as the xbox version?

Did I wake up in Bizzaro world?

It's a bonus that the PC version looks the same as the xbox version?

Did I wake up in Bizzaro world?

Exactly. It's designed to run at 60 FPS on consoles, and appears to have no extra eye candy for PC, so hooray I can run it at 600 FPS!

id single player has always, always been the weak point. I just don't see myself buying an id game designed primarily for single player and the console.

The thing I like/hate most about it is that when I watch the demos(6/7 of 'em?) all I can think of is Borderlands.

For me, that's not a problem since I loved Borderlands.

This, on the other hand, is practically a show stopper. I can only hope this guy was running with some weak sauce settings or something else.

I can't but feel so utterly bored everytime I watch videos of this game. About the only good thing it has going for it is the art direction in the junk towns. Everything else from the gameplay to the enemies is so... blah.

I enjoyed all of id software singe player.

the only one i didnt enjoy was quake 3 arena

Could be. It is a 1up article, afterall. I hope...

Enemy AI is probably the most impressive thing to me IMO. The game can be total crap but I hope more people try to do what they are doing with different enemies. Here is a vid on some of it...

Considering how weak their recent games have been it's not too big of a stretch to say it's better than anything since Quake 2.
The earlier stuff was great for the time, but obviously almost every new game should be better than Doom and Wolfenstein on paper...so that covers that base, too.
It's really only competing with Quake 1-3, and #3 was MP-only, so that only half counts.

Exactly what recent games? The last thing id software has been directly responsible for is Doom 3 afaik.

I'm not an ID fan. Loved Doom, Doom 2, Quake 1&2. Then, it went to shit for me. Carmack is overrated. He DID revolutionary stuff, then he tried to hard and others beat him to the punch. Unreal, Crytek came out with stuff that he was still working on.

Enemy AI sounds good. Console & PC being similar is a deal breaker. I own a kick ass PC that can kick the crap out of an Xbox 360. I'd like to use it, thank you.

This. Doom 3....single player was meh, especially after playing Half Life 2 around the same time. Not to mention the HORRIBLE multiplayer for Doom 3. Carmack has taken too long to get this game out, everyone has gone past this game in gameplay tbh, and if the game looks no better on the PC than it does on the shitty console, fuck it, not even worth torrenting

Having said that, it is an article on 1up, not exactly a website for hardcore gamers, its right up there with IGN and Gamespy

It really isnt carmack fault. carmack is a extremely skilled programmer. He figure stuff out and invents new stuff. Gameplay wise it isnt really his skill.

1Up is better than IGN or Gamespy well at least the personalities involved are better. Prior to last week I might have said Gamespy isn't that bad, but well just go read their Driver: SF PC preview. The fact that they let that thing get published......

Is it just me, or are some people really easily impressed?

Rage has not captured my attention, and aside from the animations and the AI, I fail to see why it would be deemed a better game than any of Id's previous titles...

Simply from the title, this is most probably a paid advertisement.

Bethesda (Rage publisher) does have to go up against the two biggest FPS franchises as well as its own Skyrim in the same four-week release window, so unconventional means of advertising might be a good idea.

I didn't see a dramatic difference in the fun level of each game's SP. Maybe HL2 gets an 8.5 and Doom 3 gets an 8 on a stingy 1-10 scale. Coming from HL, HL2 actually disappointed me more than Doom 3. It felt too short and the puzzles and exploration were under par. Combat had a COD feel to it. AI wasn't that great. For its time, I thought HL was the more revolutionary game. But no doubt Doom 3 MP was half baked. HL2 DM was fun for a few days.

I'm looking forward to Rage. I don't expect its gameplay to blow me away like Dark Souls will, but I think it will be solid, in the upper tier of today's FPS games. id games always have a great visceral feel.

When you said "1) Jackass Vehicle Physics", I thought you were being sarcastic and about to trash the game.

Gotta double-tap, eh????? Sweet......

So, for the most important question.... how are the contols? M/KB work well with the vehicle battle? How are contols in general?

I have really been looking forward to this game cos I am a big ID fan (Wolfenstein was considered the first FPS.... correct?). I have high hopes and I am glad you didn't crap all over the game.... thanks for the info!

Looks like boarderlands. Specially with the lame driving video they posted. I'll wait for reviews.

Unfortunately only one of the enemies actually uses the environment to his advantage and attacks you from multiple directions. The rest, especially the Authority soldiers, just sort of stand there and shoot at you.

Shotgun is the most satisfying since Doom?

The double shotgun was very satisfying - the double shotgun in RAGE is preorder only

:(

How much did carmack pay this guy to write this drivel?

I actually feel this game is going to kick ass, and I've been pumped for it since the first bits hit GI many years ago but back then I was excited from a graphical/id kind of perspective rather than it being a solid game. If you catch my drift. Though In the past two years I've kind of accepted that it's not gonna blow me away visually but I really think id's really gonna impress a lot of people.

I think it's gonna look incredibly clean, unique and run incredibly well. A "next-gen" game in form and feel if you will. All the Video's I've seen makes the gun play actually fun and dynamic. There's a huge amount of diversity in your weapon and skill set, that boomerang thing is fucking awesome and it looks SMOOTH. All the animations of shooting, enemy movement and death all look great.

Then they can apply those "gameplay" principles and make DOOM4 a shotgun barrel of sex.

\End Rant, Sorry kind of everywhere.

This is my problem. Doom wasn't exactly an incredible "story". It was fun as hell but the MP has always been where its at.

It doesn't look like a bad game but it also doesn't look that amazing either.

Goodbye Rage. Hello, Hard Reset.

I would ignore that...the article is clearly advertising, aimed at console gamers. No reputable gaming reviewer/journalist would actually come out with something that ridiculously biased before they've even reviewed the game properly, let alone played all aspects of the game like online multiplayer and then have relevant NDAs expire. It's marketing.

It's trying to say to console players "hey, BF3 might look like shit on your console, but Rage won't! Buy Rage!"

Rage is on my extremely short list (I'm talking 3-4 titles) of games to buy this year.

What there's multiplayer in this game?

Yes but it sounds kind of different. More Twisted Metal than standard FPS modes...

Rage has two multiplayer modes: Combat Rally and Legends of the Wasteland. In Combat Rally, up to six players compete in a free-for-all match that takes place in an arena designed to make use of the vehicles. The objective is to collect rally points that appear around the arena while killing your opponents and stealing their points. Legends of the Wasteland is a series of two-player bonus co-op missions based on stories that you hear about as you play the single player campaign.

Looking forward to a demo I can try, and nothing else. Stop listening to the hype people. Wait for the real deal.
