Firefox Quantum (57) has hit release candidate state and has been marked to ship. If you want to get a head start on the next version you can download it now.

The UI has changed a little bit so it will take a few minutes to tweak it. It just feels so much faster.

One cool thing is that Mozilla has brought back the ability to use Tracking Protection (must be enabled) without being in private windows. TP does act like an ad blocker though, so make sure you disable it on your favorite sites (click the shield icon in the URL bar).

Been testing it off and on for a few weeks, still not happy with it overall compared to the rock solid reliable Firefox ESR 52 (and yes I'm aware that Quantum is in testing and still improving). Overall I'm just not a happy camper with respect to the things Mozilla is doing with Firefox but that's my own opinion on the matter there, not all the changes are positive ones for me and my particular workflow with Firefox so I'm confident I'll be using this version of ESR for a long, long time to come.

The next ESR, v59, will be based on Quantum of course and have all the stuff that brings to the party which means it'll have all the stuff that I don't find to be useful and all the changes as well so more than likely I'll just keep using v52 for the foreseeable future.

Holding out until 59 would give them a chance to get all the bugs worked out. Don't blame you.
 
Hmm, I see there is a build2 and build3 now from yesterday, but no mention on their testing site of the other two newer builds. Anyone know what they are for?
 
They've published the final RC build and put it on their public FTP site for release. Updated link. Installs over RC build 1 if you tested it.
 
i've been using since beta and I extremely pleased with it, it got full official release today. and well, I think officially I never gonna use Chrome again.
 
Not a fan of the options UI otherwise it's a good improvement but if you add a theme to it the browser takes the colors and pictures but ditches the textures. I've been having a big problem with Firefox since Windows Fall CU was out really slugish. I would switch to Microsoft edge but they dug their own grave but not added simple colors and themes to their browser.
 
Yeah I switched to Chrome "something I never do" since the themes are textured alot of my Firefox extensions like user agent switcher don't work in Firefox anymore but work in Chrome.
 
Noticed a drastic improvement here since updating to v57. On certain websites I would get lag all the time was just about to switch but not anymore. I suspect Javascript was the issue but unsure.
 
Garbage, won't even run for me. I was barely able to roll back to the previous version because it always auto-installed this.
 
Sure, and how did you deduce that? "No, Firefox is Quantum is perfect, it can't cause issues for anyone, that's impossible!" Was that your logic? Or was it the good ol' : "It works for me, therefore it should for everyone!"?
 
Got upgraded to it this morning and went back to 56. Couldn't get the toolbars arranged the way they were in the prior versions. Don't like Chrome or Edge, might have to try some others.
 
Within 5 minutes of logging in to vSphere web console, it will lock up. So far, it's repeatable on all of our systems.

I've noticed the stop/refresh button can't be placed back in the original spot, and the favorite star is moved, but otherwise I was able to get mine set back up the same way. What toolbar are you having issues with?

The bar showing what tabs are open is on the top now instead of the bottom. I want it like the image below but can't drag the toolbars into the right orientation.

I went back to 56 on all my computers as well. The new transparent square tabs look fugly, especially on windows 7 aero. And I don't want / need the pocket, bookmark and website action buttons on the address bar, but you can't customize them away. You can disable the pocket from about:config but not the others.

You can remove the bookmark star. That little 1/2" of dots bother you that much?
 
Right-click the star... remove. Right-click the pocket... remove. Pretty simple to get rid of those. As for the ellipsis, there's probably some config you can change.
 
I wonder if they'll release a statistic on how many people disabled updates uninstalled it and went back to 56.

Probably not, as it can only serve to make them look bad.

I don't think it's going to be bad at all for them. Reaction seems to be overwhelming positive from what I've seen. You might want to find something else to whine about. I use the beta currently and it has no clear tabs on it. I also used the nightly version for a while when Quantum appeared there. Maybe worth a shot? I guess it doesn't even run for you so you wouldn't even know anyway. It runs great on my system.

The best you can do is get the tabs below the address bar. I think the bookmarks will be under that.

  1. Close Firefox
  2. Go to %appdata%\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<whatever>.default\ and create a folder called chrome (if it exist, just open the folder).
  3. Inside the chrome folder create a text file called userChrome.css Make sure the icon changes to the gear icon to know the extension is right. You may have to view extension to make sure it's not really a txt file.
  4. Edit the .css file and paste the following code.

That worked. Any way to get it so the bookmarks toolbar and the URL/search bar are not highlighted all the time?

Went on the Mozilla Firefox Forum and got a solution. Apparently the "fog" on those bars was a holdover from using Classic Theme Restorer on 56. Added this code to the userChrome file to get rid of it.

I like FF Quantum a lot. And I do think that I will switch to it from Chrome. The huge hassle is the gobbledygook that my bookmarks have become on Chrome. I know, I can import them into FF, but I don't want the mess to persist.

My bookmarks are totally out of control. I have no idea as to how to fix this crap.
