Final Fantasy XIV has updated its Recruit-A-Friend program for the new Heavensward expansion! The RAF program gives some considerable benefits for both current players and new recruits, so it behooves all players considering FFXIV to be recruited by veterans. Thus, I propose we use this thread for players to announce they are looking to be recruited, so that those like myself capable of recruiting can start you off right!

Here are a few of the benefits granted to Recruits (available on all characters, present and future)

Friendship Circlet - Gives 20% Bonus XP so long as you are under Level 25! This is a BIG bonus considering that unlike many MMOs, a single character levels up many classes, so you'll be able to use this bonus again and again!
Aetheryte Ticket x99 - In FFXIV, you can Teleport to any "Aetheryte" that you've touched, at any time. These are mostly found in towns and cities around the world, so they're a fast way to get around. While you can set one of them as a Home point and others as Favorites in order to portal to them for free, all the others in the game world charge you in-game currency depending on how far it is from your current locale. For newcomers especially, it can get expensive porting all over the place, but these consumable tickets all you to Teleport anywhere for no charge!
Ballroom Etiquitte: Improper Greeting - This unlocks the /fistbump and /brofist emotes! FFXIV has many emotes that can only be granted through special conditions like quests, finding books and more.
10 Silver Chocobo Feathers - You can turn these in to special NPCs to unlock unique equipment!

For more information, check out the RAF campaign page here - Recruit a Friend Campaign | FINAL FANTASY XIV, The Lodestone

Anyone interested in FFXIV and wish to be Recruited? You need only PM me your Email Address!

For the smoothest road, I suggest asking to be recruited as early as possible to help ensure you get all the benefits available. Please note, while you can have a Recruiter send you a key via email at any time, in order to redeem that key and gain the benefits you must apply a FFXIV Game Account Key to create said account, but NOT yet be in your paid subscription period (ie After your free trial and/or 30 days included in your account key.) This is a little cumbersome, so I will copy and paste an entry from the Help Desk about redeeming keys at the bottom of my post that I hope will clarify.

Edit: For those interested in being Recruited I'd be happy to help you find the the lowest (legit) cost account keys to get you started in FFXIV! I frequent quite a few sites that offer discounts, special promotions, and sales and thus may be able to save you money!

If you have any questions feel free to contact me via PM as well. Enjoy!

Is content still locked behind a time gate?

What do you mean? Perhaps I've not gotten far enough, but I've not seen anything that seems time-gated beyond standard MMO parameters (ie certain content you need to be level X to undertake etc). More detail in your query, perhaps?

Limit on the amount of relic currency you can obtain each week, being locked out of coil, etc. It's been a long time since I last played.

I'm honestly not far enough in the game to be able to answer these questions effectively; they may be better posed to the game's thread in PC Gaming?

However, I will say that as it has been a long time since I played as well (I played for just a little while during 1.0, came back for ARR, and then was away for quite a long time without much progress) I can say they've added a lot of new features and even some quality of life stuff. My personal experience isn't with top-level content, but perhaps you can read over the patch notes and summaries and they will answer your questions as well. Of course, the launch of Heavensward again changes things!

Worth it for a casual player?

I would say so. I'd consider my time in FFXIV to be "casual" - it has always been one of multiple MMOs I've split my time between. Even more so than 1.0 or even the launch of 2.0 (AKA A Realm Reborn.), there's a lot of "casual" content here.

Whatever your particular focus in game, you can choose to attend to it at your leisure. This is amplified by the ability to level any number of classes/jobs, swapping between them at will and even selecting a limited amount of "off class" skills you learned from another class. Disciplines of War and Disciplines of Magic are non-magic and magic focused "main" combat classes, Disciplines of the Land are gathering professions, Disciplines of the Hand are the crafting professions. "Jobs" are "Advanced" combat classes that can be unlocked by leveling other DoW/DoM sufficiently and are many of the most recognizable Final Fantasy themed classes. This is one reason that the item you get from being Recruited, the "Friendship Circlet" is so useful - Having one means that you gain 20%+ XP up to level 25, so it really speeds your leveling (in addition to other buffs, rested XP etc..) over and over again as you use with with many classes!

There are some great quality of life improvements that benefit casuals (ie Leves/Guildhests which are dynamic, repeatable quests that can be for not only combat classes, but gatherers and crafters as well), a well done "content finder" (dungeon, raid, and other group stuff) and even a little pop up when you log on that suggests some things to do nearby for your current level and where to find them! They added lots of stuff for gameworld "fluff" too, such as dyes, non-combat pets and (with Heavensward, flying) mounts that can be customized (aka "costumes/barding" for your chocobo) emotes (many of which are granted via quests, items and more), really comprehensive marriage ceremonies, and both personal and guild housing. Housing is NON instanced and takes place in open zone "neighborhoods", which is pretty cool. I've been told that the availability of housing is one of the only issues. Housing costs a lot of in-game currency, but there also needs to be an available lot. Hopefully they will add more "neighborhoods" soon. The addition of Gold Saucer (inspired by the minigame casino of the same name in Final Fantasy VII) and the implementation of "Triple Triad", the acclaimed card game from Final Fantasy VIII are just a few of the neat features! There are also lots of new Heavensward updates too. For instance, eventually guilds (aka "Free Companies") will be able to build and fly their own Airship, which is both transportation and "housing".

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. However, if you want to give it a try feel free to PM and I'll get you invited!

Yes. You can login and do a myriad of smaller tasks that don't take a lot of your time. You can do outdoor boss hunting called Fates that is quick, fast, and public. They pop on the map, rush over to them, toss some heals, tank, or dps, and level up. There are dungeons to run also. Of course there is questing. :)

Xaeos explained the crafting and other things you can do that you may find more exciting.

Final Fantasy XIV has just let Patch 3.2 go live!

They've just added quite a bit of new content, including some things especially for new players llike the "Hall of the Novice" which teaches group combat/raid dynamics, and the new Mentor system which will enable you to speak to experienced players volunteering their time in a special channel and/or party with them! Some overview/details here - FINAL FANTASY XIV: Heavensward | The Gears of Change .

They've also added new bonuses to the Recruit-A-Friend system for both recruits and recruiters, so all you need is an email address to get going!

Updated and clarified the recruitment policy to make it easier for everyone involved!

Can these be used for retired players? I haven't played since about 2 weeks before heavensward came out... I'm willing to play again if there is some sort of trial I can use again... but with my old account and with my toons I had.

Btw, content _is_ locked behind a time gate, to correct the erroneous post from earlier. You can only obtain a certain amount of loot every week. That's not saying the game is 'bad' but the reason I quit is because it just felt like it was a neverending staircase of work instead of an actual game that was fun.

Let me check into this. I should mention that every so often they sometimes run "come back" events where all accounts can play free for a week - its standard MMO practice I've found, especially after new content is launched. As far as the Recruitment is concerned, let me look into this to see if anything has changed. Normally, these Recruits could only be used on a free trial account before someone buys, but that was prior to Heavensward. I remember them talking about "resurrection recruitment" but they may not be in yet. In the meantime, check the homepage every so often for a free promo play period.

Btw, content _is_ locked behind a time gate, to correct the erroneous post from earlier. You can only obtain a certain amount of loot every week. That's not saying the game is 'bad' but the reason I quit is because it just felt like it was a neverending staircase of work instead of an actual game that was fun.

Again, I've not made it to "Raiding" tiers of gameplay, but for the very particular case you mention above it does seem plausible. Its standard for raiding MMOs to only allow loot drops from each raid once per week , at least for the current raid and setting (ie Standard vs Hard modes etc). Run as you like for achievements, older raids to gear up etc... but the current tier is usually on a weekly cycle for gear. I personally don't consider this a particularly strenuous lock, especially since FFXIV has been adding new content. If you're not having fun anymore its certainly worth it to take a break from FFXIV or any MMO, but don't forget that there is a lot to do besides raiding and there's more every patch too!

Edit: A few other interesting things about the game...

If you're the sort who enjoys following on the community for a game, FFXIV has surprisingly good and integrated community. Each character has a profile page that shows "Armory" style information, browsing others equipment etc... but you can also make not only forum posts, but blogs, quick status/microblog messages (ie tweet-like), and organize your calendar with events both personal, guild/FreeCompany, and linkshell. There is also an integrated Eorzea Database ( WoWhead-ish) ,Wiki, and there is a free database app "Libra Eorzea" for Android (probably iOS too) as well. Many of these features can be interacted with inside the game, though not all of them. Of course, if you don't care to use any of these features you don't have to - everything is private unless you set it public (save for basic character Armory-style info anyone could get from inspecting you in game) .

I should also mention that recent patches have brought forth "The Feast" - A PVP focused event that grants additional rewards based on your rank and more! The Feast | FINAL FANTASY XIV, The Lodestone - FFXIV is more cooperative than PVP (there are no free/open PVP realms, it isn't that kind of game), but they've been adding some "by choice" PVP battlegrounds and arenas that are well fleshed out with rewards, but The Feast sort of takes this to the next level! If you are looking for more PVP content, enjoy!

If you want to see what has changed, check out the Patch Note backlog - Patch Archives | FINAL FANTASY XIV, The Lodestone . They also ahve little overviews of each patch, for those who don't want to read the whole notes. Please note these are the "major, tenth's" patches only, like 3.1, 3.2 etc.. therer are also minor patches that add new things but on a much smaller scale like 3.21, 3.22. Of course, Expansions and whatnot are major number increments. FFXIV is good at adding new content and tweaking existing pretty frequently.

I mean, fine, if something is "standard for MMO's" then status quo it is. But if people are actually going to try to make the MMO genre popular again, they need to stop with the 'this is par for the course' attitude, and go back to making the game fun again, and stop focusing on the endgame raiding and gear ramp only. The game needs to be fun outself of that, and FF14 is not really that fun. You will definitely spend most of your time (99%) in random dungeons with people you won't even meet, or see again. Until you get to the heroic mode of Midas and the upper tiers, it's just a grind, none of it's remotely difficult and you can get by without knowing what you're doing. Then suddenly you need a static to get anywhere.

But when gear resets, and the content isn't any different, just a different difficulty level it has you questioning if it's even worth it, when you could just resub 3 months later and get it from pugging after ilvl inflation. Sorry I realize I'm jaded. I played WoW until WoTLK so maybe I've burned out of it, but I do sincerely think that the game needs something more than an endless staircase of meaningless loot to capture my attention. MMO's could look at at classic WoW (Nostral's success) for example, for what people are interested in, but I doubt they will. They're catering to casual people who are playing a game that is supposed to be about time investment, which is just stupid if you ask me. Might as well play a single player RPG with a much better story and save yourself the trouble.

tldr; the game is just a number ramp. The gear means absolutely nothing, it's just a number, and you feel like a template and not a character, just like new WoW. Every encounter has things to 'remember' and none of it is particularly skill based. It just requires you to remember events for tons of encounters and once you do that, you can do anything. If you're not interested in those types of games, I'd pass on this.

I for one, loved wow and will play any MMO that wants to share similar game mechanics as it has.
I enjoyed the leveling process a bunch more than I enjoyed the end game.
As I stated before, I stopped about two weeks before heavensward came out. I stopped because I was finally bored out of my goard with the repetive grind end game required.

The entire journey from level 1 to 50 was a blast in my experience. Even a great deal afterwards was fine.

Let's not forget that your fun factor also varies heavily on the guild you are with too. And because of the generous daily rewards and the extreme ease of joining the public dungeons, I rarely ran into an issue running with Randoms. 90% of players know atleast the basics of the dungeons to where it didn't matter if they were random or not. I almost always got my daily randoms completed without encountering any major hiccups.

And let's not forget the extra rewards you recieve if someone in your group hasn't done the current dungeon either. This game rewards players for their patience, and it pays off indeed.

If you've got a shit guild, I don't care what MMO it is, you're going to have a crappy time. I joined one of the best guilda I've ever been in(in any MMO I've played) early on in FFXIV, never met such a great group of helpful players.

However, end game is where I had the problem. It became way too repetitive and too time consuming to queue up for end game (24 man?) stuff. My crafting was already leveled and had no intention on leveling an alt class either. I basically sat around my custom house or guild hall until shit popped. End game from what I remember, was in dire need of more content. I'm assuming that's changed in Heavensward?
Also the PVP from what I remember was an absolute joke.
PVE side though was as good as I could expect from an MMO.

And to OP, please let me know if you find anything. I've been playing ESO for the past year and have done pretty much everything worth doing.
Here's my character I had-

Eshelmen Logan | FINAL FANTASY XIV, The Lodestone

Eshelmen - I suggest you give it another try now with Heavensward. There is a lot of new content for all levels, new Jobs, and more. I can't say I've done much PVP but those who enjoy instanced "battleground or arena" PVP have told me that The Feast and previous improvements have been worthwhile. New content like free company airship construction, Gold Saucer, upgraded neighborhood housing etc.. have all come to Heavensward. Classes have also be revised a bit as I can see, and leveling multiple of them are required in order to unlock Advanced Jobs like Dragoon, Ninja, Astrologian, Machinist. From original Realm Reborn, at least at lower levels - I can't speak to max level encounters, but leveling and queuing for content has been enhanced significantly, so you can easily find groups for dungeons and other content without spending a lot of time.

Mystique - If you are burnt out on raiding style and PVE MMOs, even some of the best of them like FFXIV and WoW probably won't satisfy. Talking about "meaningless loot" is exactly why there is a raiding loot limit to once per week, per raid/mode - they don't want people basically running the raids grind style every day, eschewing the rest of the content, and then getting bored because there is "nothing to do". I dare say that Classic WoW's success - which had the same or greater restrictions on loot drops - wasn't due to old mechanics that have since changed., but a variety of facets of its time, your personal experience with MMOs, and more. If you haven't played WoW since WotLK, I suggest giving it another try if you feel you've exhausted FFXIV, since they've added lots of new quality of life improvements, there are lots of new and old dungeons alike to enjoy, and the Pet Battle system is a mini-Pokemon MMO built right in as a sub-game if you so choose - Legion, launching Aug 30 will bring even more newness..

I personally feel that FFXIV and WoW offer some of the best MMO experiences of their type, so they're worth a try for all sorts of players and are updated frequently with new content. You can also try Guild Wars 2 (be sure to get the Heart of Thorns expansion) for another high quality MMO with a different focus - it certainly isn't about raiding! The Secret World is a unique offering as well if you;ve not played it , set in the modern era , leveling is related on a particular skill tree where you can eventually learn them all and pick your current "deck" of actives and passives that work together,, and has interesting content. If you're looking for something truly different, I suggest following two MMORPGs that are in development now - Shroud of the Avatar and Crowfall. You can pledge for both of these before they launch and get in on the alpha, currently. Of course, Star Citizen, if you are not familiar with it, has the potential to be a groundbreaking MMORPG experience in a totally different mold!

Think about what you want out of a MMO and then work from there. If you;'ve been away from any MMO you enjoyed at one point and there is a new expansion, I'd suggest checking it out again. I suggest trying out content that you may have overlooked and not getting so hung up on the "best gear" or a treadmill. Sometimes I run older content in WoW because I want to unlock a title, pet, find a unique aesthetic piece of equipment, or challenge myself to an achievement or two. In FFXIV, I level multiple classes when I get tired with one or the other and am planning for things to place in my house. Roleplaying servers offer a multitude of players that use game systems and extensions (like WoW UI Addons) to make their own fun; maybe you'd be interested in this, perhaps not, but its another way to add variety and enjoyment to the world - I know there are considerable communities in all the MMOs I've listed (sans Crowfall) I'd be happy to give you a "revival" for any MMO you used to play or "recruitment" for a new one, if I am able to do so. Just let me know.

Saw this thread after I already purchased the game bundle with heavensward. Guess it's too late to do the recruit thing but this is my first p2p MMO. Hopefully it's better than the f2p ones.

Actually, there's a very good chance you can! You bought the game bundle recently, okay... have you applied the game-key to your Square Enix / Mog Station account yet? If so, its probably still in your included "free" month of play. My understanding is so long as you haven't either A) actually had a charge on your credit card, paying for a month or more of game time after the initial free month or B) added a game time card, its likely that you can still get the benefits! Feel free to PM me your email and I'ld be happy to send you a key and we can give it a try - if it works, great! If not, well neither of us loses anything.

If you're tired of F2P MMOs, I think you'll have a better experience with "buy-to-play" and better yet subscription-style MMOs - I know I prefer them, at least the ones who do so well, by far. Final Fantasy XIV is one of the best of its type (alongside World of Warcraft, which if you ever wish to try I'd be happy to help you get set up there as well), I've found. If you tell me what you like and dislike about MMOs, what you enjoy doing class-wise (ie do you prefer using melee weapons to do damage close up? Do you want to "tank" and absorb lots off damage, a vital role for groups? Do you want to stand back and heal others? Etc..) and I'd be happy to help you get started and pointed in the right direction.

Just bumping this up for people who might be interested! Now is a great time to give FFXIV a try, as the next expansion pack - Stormblood , which adds lots of new features including swimming/underwater combat, upgraded housing, and new classes/jobs like Samurai and Red Mage - is coming June 20th! http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/stormblood/

Here's the Stormblood full trailer, just released - !

So now is a great time to get into FFXIV, even as a newcomer you'll benefit from all the existing content (and new patches in the interim), along with an upswing of players as we head towards the expansion! Just PM if you want to give it a try and get some bonuses for doing so :D

I would love to play this but I had to quit playing ARR because I didn't have time to invest into the bigger group stuff. Last time I played was when they had the Lightning event years ago where you could collect her or Snow's clothes. I remember beating the first Turn with other people. That was fun. But shortly after that I couldn't play anymore. I did like how they still had things for you to do if you didn't have a big group to play with but that's where all the good equipment is at as well as a good chunk of other stories. I plan to play it again but not sure when :p

I still even have the game installed since I enjoyed it so much and want to revisit haha.

Stormblood is now here (in Early Access, for pre-order customers anyway)! There's lots of new content, but enjoying the older original ARR (ie 2.0) and Heavensward (ie 3.0) content is still not only viable, but encouraged and is part of the gameplay pattern! Want to go right to Stormblood, skip content you missed etc.. they now have special potions (which cost real money - not unlike buying a max level character Boost on World of Warcraft) that will level you up and skip past the "core" quest line if you prefer, though I HIGHLY suggest that you play through especially if new to the game as the story and mechanics are important as well as enjoyable.

Besides Recruit A Friend referrals for new players, I am pleased to announce I can also offer special Return codes for players with existing accounts that have been absent at least 90 days! So if you played FFXIV before and want to check out the progress, these Return codes will grant you special bonuses including tokens that can be turned into gear for various classes, leveling boosts and more. I will update my main post as soon as the homepage stops being slammed thanks to the new expansion!

Any questions, feel free to ask!

Other than the betas I only bought and leveled through ARR. I played from the start, on the re-release, as a bard and was working on the weapon creation part. I think I had completed the harder Garuda, but not Ifrit or Titan.
How difficult would it be to find a group for those fights now or are they not required to complete the weapon quests?

Technically, it would be relatively easy to find others capable of handling those fights now. Alas, I am unsure about those particular quests as I've not progressed to that point. That question would best answered by perhaps the official game forums, as well as the server forums where you play in terms of grouping/linkshells etc. I know that in general there are lots of players who level up other classes/jobs and do "old" content, but the particulars you describe I'm afraid I can't answer with any certainty.
