I'm trying to convert a CD into ogg format and CDex won't save to my drive unless I reduce the length of a filename. I tried that only to find out that when I tried to rename it what it's supposed to be named that I could not fit the name of the song in the file name space. How do I get around this? Google says it's a limitation of the file system, but I think there's a way around it.

Vista upped the file length limit to 260 characters, but this includes the full path iirc. Although some media programs limit the length even shorter, one of the apple players, i think its the podcast thing limits to 63.

right; it's not JUST the file name length, but also includes the length of the full path, also.

Shocking that this problem still exists, but indeed, the full path can't exceed 260 characters.
