Is it possible to have Windows Explorer sort your files by the literal file extension, rather than by the designated file type? For instance, instead of having all of my WAV, MP3, MID, AIFF, OGG, etc files being listed as "Winamp Media File" I'd prefer that they are seperated by thier individual extensions like "WAV File" or "MP3 File" which makes it easier to identify file types within the explorer. I guess the same thing applies for images and video files, which can be grouped together under a common application.

Well you can always use the "arrange icons by type" method. You can also assign certain icons to certain file types through folder options. That way all your wave files may have one icon while your MP3s have another, etc.

You can't sort by extension, only file type.

Seperate file types for all the formats Winamp supports is currently on Nullsoft's offcial Winamp To-Do List. So eventually Winamp will no longer put everything under one file type.
