FEAR + windows update

windows update seemed to have killed my copy of FEAR. it worked fine before i updated, now i get the 'FEAR has encountered a problem and must shut down' error message.

the update was installed AFTER FEAR. system restore didn't seem to do the trick. anyone know what i can do to get FEAR up and running again?

i tried uninstalling and then reinstalling FEAR, uninstalling the system updates, and restoring it to an earlier system point.
 
i already had FEAR on v1.08

the update that kills FEAR is a rather old one (from august). having bought a copy of xp from my university, i was able to validate and thus get the updates from windows. after the update, FEAR no worky :(
 
Ok, here are some generic things to check:

Video Card Drivers: Download and install the latest drivers for your video card. ForceWare 93.71 is the latest for the GeForce 7-series.

Motherboard Drivers: Download and install the latest forceware nforce drivers (6.86).

DirectX: Download the directx webupdate thing and run it. Install whatever it wants to install. This will ensure that your directx subsystem is alive and functional.

Download and install the AMD Dual-Core optimizer driver.

Lastly, check your motherboard manufacturer for a firmware update.

None of these things are necessarily guaranteed to fix your problem. You have probably already installed some of this stuff. Reinstalling various things shouldn't hurt anything, and they may help. It is a possibility that the update has hosed one of the above items, but not necessarily guaranteed.

is there a certain way i should go about uninstalling a windows update?
 
Actually I recall reading about a certain Windows Update that *does* occasionally break game functionality. It's been a while since I read it, but you might try googling "broken windows update" or something like that.
 
the problem lies with Windows Update KB917422...I also had problems with FEAR after installing that patch where the game would not launch and all I would get was an error message...after doing some research online I discovered that it was that patch that caused the issue with a lot of games including FEAR, BF2142, Titan Quest, PREY and a few others...

you can either un-install that patch or install a hotfix that MS released in mid-October to fix the problem...installing the hotfix worked for me and know FEAR and all my other games work fine again :)

Hey waddaya know, I went ahead and tried this before uninstall/reinstall and FEAR runs like a champ again. Thank you polonyc2.

edit: now when i try to update FEAR to v1.08, it says that FEAR isn't even installed...
