ahaha I wish my T1 really ran at that speed, the FCC must be inflating the result to make things look good. In reality our T1 is so slow, but my boss still thinks it is latest and greatest thing even though we can 25/10Mbps Business line from the Charter for half the price of what we are paying AT&T right now..

Do you have the full T1 line, or is it fractional? Fractional T1 can be damned slow.

Its a full T1 but still compared to my home internet and what else is available out there these days it is slow in my book.

That could be since you are close to the central office. Someone very far away would have a much slower rate since phone lines impose limitations.

No.... everyone is getting close to 8Mbps as far as I know(where I live)....

When I say close to here, I mean about 2 hours away in a different city. Our ISP has a "super DSL" service @ 12Mbps.

While 4 may be a little on the high side as the standard. It's definitely on the low side of what's available. I pay 35 a month for an 8/1 cable connection; which works at it's rated speed or better 95% of the time and I could get up to a 60/10 for about $80 and I live in a town of no more than 20,000 people. I could also get up to a 24/3 dsl connection. Real high speed internet isn't just for major cities anymore. Heck my parents that live out in the middle of nowhere can get 6/.768 dsl if they want it.

Excatly what I was saying... I live in northern NB Canada.... in the middle of NOWHERE, in a village of 1200, and we have DSL of 8MBps/640 available to us.

Our ISP finally did provincial-wide upgrades (Saskatchewan) this year and bumped everyone on 1.5/128 to 5/768. The highest you can get from them is 25/5. So yes, DSL can handle high speeds. (That's only in the major cities though. I live in a town of 300 and the most we can get is the 5/768 packages.)

I hope the FCC pushes hard. I live about 25 miles from LA, so hardly out in the middle of nowhere, and I cannot get a DSL package faster than 300 KBps / 50 KBps no matter how much I want to pay. AT&T says they cannot guarantee me a faster speed and thus won't sell me one and uVerse is not available in my area.

Meanwhile a few cities over my friend has obscenely fast Verizon FIOS. Yes I'm jealous.

The number of people with Broadband available was getting to high.
By redefining the definition of Broadband, they can increase the number of people who don't have Broadband available.

Next step is to ask for a new tax to fund access for all the poor people who don't have Broadband available.

I pay $50/mo for a 10/1 cable line now....I remember when I paid just shy of $200/mo for a 8/2 DSL line about 6-7 years ago.

I'm on FiOS 35/35, 36/31 actual speednet. I wanted the 50/20 but somehow wasn't available. The 35 up makes up for it though :)

Though the 1Gb I think is only really sold for p2p circuits. I'm working channel binded docsis 3 at 54/5 the other day, but I mean we can only guarantee that to the drain goodluck getting that outside our network.

*shrug* I cant think of a reason why I'd care about my upload. If I get any requests I might test 50/20 this year, but no one really cares about upload. I mean just from the customer feedback I've heard.

I drop a ton of my high res pictures from my camera on Flickr, and really appreciate the higher upstream bandwidth...

The only problem is, the flickr servers seem to be the limiting factor, so I barely get better speeds now than I did before I had FiOS. :(

I'm on AT&T DSL. We're supposed to get 1.5 Mbps down/384 Kbps up, but we're lucky if we get 384 Kbps down most of the time. I'm not sure if it's AT&T ^$%#ing with us (like with our bills) or because our phone lines suck, but whatever the case, it takes me days to download games. Alien Swarm, for instance, took me about two days to download (online play is another story). I told this to my cousin, who has FiOS, and he said he downloaded it in the time it took for him to go to the kitchen and make a cup of ramen.

What I'm trying to say is, DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL WITH YOUR "BROADBAND" CONNECTIONS!!!

    :p

SWEET! So when does AT&T and Comcast have to quit advertising they offer broadband in my area? Gonna be great! Even better if they finally decide to upgrade their systems after 10years.

This is hopefully great news. After using at&t DSL for 5 years i can hardly call that crap broadband. luckily time warner stepped up their game and give me 6-30Mb/s (depending on time of day) down and 1.8Mb/s up now.

you cant compare a T1 to a regular DSL / cable line, lets see you upload at 1.5 and download at 1.5 at the same time with say a 1.5/1.5 cable line.. wont happen.

Maybe this means Comcast will increase their economy speed to 4/1. I'd downgrade to that if they did. It is 25 dollars a month with cable TV service.

These days (esp w/DOCSIS 3.0) you can easily see real world 20/5 speeds on cable, at the same time. Some DSL connections are capable of speeds like that also.

I work for Michigan's Largest FCC Licensed Wireless Company and we dont offer 4/1 in all markets... Mostly 3/384... Ural Michigan it's hard to find anything better. Hell in most of our market's customer's cant even get DSL or cable internet.... Sad to see really.

I live <hr outside Dallas, I pay @$73/mo for wifi 2Mb/300Kb and I rarely get close to 2Mb and latency and service is inconsistant. There is no cable or DSL available to me (rural). Lack of competition is a killer.

Hope to sell my house soon and move into town where FIOS will be at the top of my list of available services for a new home.

My AT&T DSL was very frustrating, as I do alot of file transfer back and forth to the office. I went from 3 Meg Down/384K up to Comcast today, which is hitting around 16 Meg down/3 Meg up. Cheaper for 6 months than DSL, then slightly more. Over 1 year, it will average to the same price, then I will reevaluate.

Yeah thats why we're (engineering) not so up in arms as the sales groups about doing big up and down. Once you get off our network it does matter what your speed is if flickr or photobucket cant support your traffic.

Rumor is guys in charge might work out deals for direct fiber ISP 2 ISP. So we may in the next year or two handle off traffic directly to say Comcast or TimeWarner for example, but thats all theoretical, you didnt hear it from me.

3mbps/768kbps non broadband reporting in. We have the only cable provider in my area and its rather pathetic.

I pay my dads cell and my mom pays our internet. Our 60 channel tv + music channels and internet runs us 95 a month. They offer up to 10mbps but that isn't in our budget because to get it you need to upgrade your tv too taking it to like 135 a month.

Its sad when I'm playing a game and someone else even jumps on to browse the web I get instalag.
