Talk about freaky, the FBI is gearing up to create a massive computer database of people's physical characteristics to better identify criminals and terrorists. As you can imagine, privacy advocates are having a field day with this one. Thanks to Lethal for the link on this one.

The bureau is expected to announce in coming days the awarding of a $1 billion, 10-year contract to help create the database that will compile an array of biometric information -- from palm prints to eye scans. Kimberly Del Greco, the FBI's Biometric Services section chief, said adding to the database is "important to protect the borders to keep the terrorists out, protect our citizens, our neighbors, our children so they can have good jobs, and have a safe country to live in."

For convicted criminals. Ok. For the general population, oh hell no. Protecting people from terrorists is the new "think of the children". We live in what is suppsoed to be a free society, a free society does not come without risks and if you can't stand the risks move to some nanny state where you don't have to think, or take care of yourself but don't play this give away freedom for security game.

and who did not see this coming? the potential for abuse and/or harm from misuse is staggering. the philosophy will be cast a wide net, and "if you have nothing to hide...". and the no fly list does nothing to make me feel safer. Air Marshall's with weapons dressed in plain clothes, now that makes me feel a little better, but our Gov't just keeps reaching for more.

the thing that bothers me is the FBI loses laptops with classified information on them, and i wont even go into carnivore. lemme guess...they will run windows too

This is nothing new, there are systems that store similar information already in place. This will just 'integrate' them.

Its shit like this that makes me more and more convinced I should never return to my birth country.

I just love the qoutes in there "announce in coming days the awarding of a $1 billion, 10-year contract to help create the database that will compile an array of biometric information -- from palm prints to eye scans." So your tax dollars have already been handed off to god knows what company to set this insanity up !!??!

I wonder how long it'll be before we find out Cheney,or another of Bush's croneys,is a grossly overpaid board member of this company. :D

Great! So, how do they expect to catch these "terrorists" and get identifying body marks if they can't find the sumbitches in the first place???

Read the article.

The FBI says it will protect all this personal data and only collect information on criminals and those seeking sensitive jobs.

With that in mind, I've already had all my info taken and directly uploaded to the FBI, so I'm all set. (note: I'm not a criminal... lol)

If you aren't planning on being a criminal, there isn't a worry. You guys need to stop having such over-inflated ego's to think the US gov't actually gives a shit about your worthless civilian life. :p

I can't believe people still use the excuse of: "If you aren't one then you have nothing to worry about," talk about a lame excuse to give up your privacy.

I've worked with the FBI recently. When you actually report a significant crime they are slower than shit about working on it.

Bleh.

Nobody is giving up privacy. If you are convicted of a crime, you get your info taken. If you are applying for a high security job, you have you info taken.

The only thing the US gov't wants to track its own people for is for the reason to collect their tax dollars. If you think they give one shit about you, you're wrong. Hell, we have millions of illegals here in the US, and hundreds/thousands more per day pouring across our sieve of a border. I'd be willing to bet 95% of them don't even have a US form of valid identification.

While you're at it, you might want to pull out your molars. It's how the US gov't tracks you through your daily routines. They implant them in you while you sleep. :p

I thought the exact same thing, and they even mentioned the safety of children in the article! It was good for a laugh.

Like Benjamin Franklyn said "Those who would sacrifice liberty for freedom deserve neither."

That's mostly the reason why this stuff pisses me off so much. We have potentially millions (very easily hundreds of thousands) of illeagle immigrants in this country. So what do we do? Spend a billion dollars on a fence? HA! We spend a billion dollars on a way of tracking and organizing the general public!

NOONE SUSPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!

Ditto :p , but the harsh reality is, anyone can come across the border, with anything.

Exactly! Like these "terrorists" are going to line up to give them DNA samples!!!

Seriously hope you forgot the /sarcasm tag

I say more power to them, as long as it's not your every day average citizen they want to do it to.

I personally don't mind if they scan my email, watch me out in public or anything. I don't have anything to hide so it doesn't bother me and if it means catching terrorist or other criminals, go for it. If you aren't trying tt do something, then you have nothing to worry about.

People holler privacy crap to try and convince people things are a bad idea and possibly because maybe they have something to hide, or will.

I'm all for giving up a little privacy to help protect me and my family more.

I do see fingerprinting children as a double edged sword though. I mean for one, it would be easy to identify them if something ever happened but, it would also make the job of the police easier as they would have a lot more people's fingerprints in the system.

As far as the illegal immigrant problem. That's very simple to fix. The illegals would go back home on their own and not have to be deported. Well, 99% of them.

How does taking your retina scan and a palm/finger scan keep people from crossing the border illegally? lol that made me laugh good.

If you've been convicted of a felony then i think this makes sense, but a misdeminor i think would be taking it too far. Also, i hope that this database isnt stored on some laptop that some guy can run off with... that would be great.:)

I have no clue how it would help the border issue. We need a monitored fence system that couldn't be breeched easily. It certainly would cut down on the influx.

But I'd assume all the info would be stored on a central database with some sort of encrypted tunnel application to the client computer stations.

There is an oft-overlooked Presidential candidate you could vote for who is on-record as being against this kind of thing (while consistently voting that way in the House) and his name is...

<Sigh> Who am I kidding?

Cue w1retap in 5... 4... 3... :D

Ah, the ACLU. One of the fine organizations in the US that wants to give captured terrorist enemy combatants the luxury of our Constitutional rights.

"(insert fascist agenda here) [is] important to protect the borders to keep the terrorists out, protect our citizens, our neighbors, our children so they can have good jobs, and have a safe country to live in."

Sounds like the usual template to me.

Maybe that's because they know once you give the government one single thing, they keep expanding it until it encompasses everybody. If they gave in on that, the definition of "terrorist" would quickly be watered down to anybody that even criticized the government.

Sadly though there is a large portion of the population that is already databased and categorized. I mean i wok in a secure facility and have to do thumb scans and carry a badge and before that i carried a badge and endless amounts of combos. Sadly Americans are to stupid for the most part to realize we are giving up our rights. Look deeper into the Patriot Act, that is a pure piece of fascism and we the people gave our rights away for that piece of trash to be put in to enactment, all in the name of "democracy." that is not freedom it is the slow spiral of fascism.

Bleh.

Define significant.

I ask because my father was law enforcement for all of my life, so I know a thing or two about that world.

FYI-US Customs, now ICE, enforces like 230-250 laws. It's not like these guys sit around f'ing off.

Don't get me started on that idiotic lunacy called the ACLU. They have their own agenda and that's for the country to be run by them and their way. That would be a major disaster. They should take very one of them out back and shoot em before they destroy this country. They just a bunch of paranoid idiots that must be criminals if they have a problem with the government monitoring things.

It is important to secure the border. You see, we have this thing called illegal entry. You do it the right way or you break the law. Not securing the borders is like having a prison with no walls, fences, etc.

Like I said, about the only people that have a problem with the government and law doing things to help improve their chances on catching criminals and terrorist, are people that don't believe in punishing people or are criminals themselves. If you have nothing to hide....

Shut up. :D

Go watch more hollywood movies.

I should add one other category to above.

Paranoid conspiracy theorist

Why would you do something like that? What is the point of doing this?

Of course they do. Which is why they spend more time tossing my shit at the airport than they do actually catching illegals. Holy shit batman I may have brought back $412 worth of shit instead of $400 this is important shit right here! Lets screw with this dude and not even bother trying to enforce the really important laws!

You obviously have no clue what you are talking about.

TSA (Transportation Security Agency) is who searches your luggage. They aren't really law enforcement.

US Customs (ICE) is law enforcement. The folks you see at the ports of entry are low level guys. Agents, like my father, investigate and arrest many people. I assure you they are not sitting around. They handle the following:

Fraud: Fake merchandise brought into the US. This also include companies who fudge numbers on product they bring over to avoid tariffs.

Drugs: Anything from small amounts to TONS of illegal drugs. Raids, controlled deliveries, surveillance-this is a busy area.

Child porn: Another busy area. Undercover work, internet surveillance/investigation...etc.

And tons of other crap.

These people put themselves in harms way many times in their career. For YOUR better life.

So before you go off and insult good people by saying they do nothing-know what you're talking about. People do work hard to keep you and your children safe.
