well im sure this is going to turn into an arguement of some sort...would like it not to but thats just human nature...now to my point of this post...

was just wondering everyone's favorite PC game is/was
what type it is/was
and what the story line is/was if it has one

My Favorite PC game: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Its an RPG but it has that old school diologe touch of the old Lucas Arts adventure games (ie Day of the Tenticle.) (I know, produced by different company, but the feel was there.)

And no I won't ruin the story but it definately has that old trilogy feel to it, and to be honest I'm no big Star Wars fan but its the best Star Wars story since Return of the Jedi. I'm not giving spoilers, I'd be ruining it for the people that haven't played it. And the dialog is sometimes humorous to the say the least.

Personally I liked the Light side story better and I liked the themes that came along with it as well. Sci Fi is often used as a way to comment on today's society and this game does in ways that no other game I've played has. And damn, if you really examine the events there are tons of themes that are very pertainate to society.
It is a true piece of art.

Ultima II :)

Call me an old man, see if I care - hahaha :D

Damn, I've been playing PC games this long - holy mosses

Duke Nukem 3d for me. Yea it's old, but I played that game for many, many hours. *sigh* those were the good ol' days....

fallout/fallou2. i can't really seperate them. and its hard for me to say which one i like better. probably fallout2. but i'm not sure :(. those games have to be some of the best, ever.

Argh.... I'd have to say either Doom(original) or Half-Life. And no, I can't just choose one.

Gotta be either Doom or Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries. I wasted a lot of my childhood on those games. :D

fallout 2
unreal tournament
counterstrike
quake 2

I've played newer games, but those were my favorite ones. New games just seem to f*ck up the game play and focus on being pretty.

Quake 2
I spent more time playing Quake 2 then I think I have spent playing any other pc game, and I put my share of hours in to a lot of games.

Half-Life is my favorite singleplayer game ever.
For multiplayer it'd be a tie between CS and Warcraft 3 + expansion. Man, I've wasted so many hours on those two games. Warcraft especially.

No One Lives Forever. The first one, not the sequel. It has a great story, neat setpieces and levels, and hilarious dialogue. Seriously. If you haven't checked it out, do yourself a favour. I have fond memories of playing through NOLF a few years ago at Christmas.

I agree as well with KOTOR. Been a while since I have played a game with a great story.

Yeah, I love WC3 standard multi (3v3 is the best) but all of the user made maps and hero battle style games are hella fun as well.

Doom and Legend of Zelda (yeah it's a console game so what?). I wasted a whole summer playing Zelda on my trusty SNES and Doom was what I started playing back in the day.

A difficult question, for sure. I'd probably have to go with the SimCity series. I won't single out just one, because I consider each one an improvement over the previous--not a complete change in core gameplay.

I'm also a fan of Unreal Tournament for quick-and-dirty games, but SimCity has a lasting appeal for me. In fact, I've been itching to play it lately and really need to reinstall it on my laptop.

I don't know if it's my favorite ever. But it's a good one. One of the best I've played in the last 5 years.

Soldier Of Fortune II: Double Helix multiplayer. I must have wasted 1,500 hours playing that over the years online.

Followed by Duke Nukem 3D. That game was the reason I got my first PC back in 1997...PB Legend Supreme 1600...P133...24MB RAM....S3 Trio64...Win95B. My friend had the game and I played it at his house and the rest is history.

i think Soldier of fortune 2 double helix was my favorite, it was just so much fun, and just about everyones computer could run it.

Quake III arena also has to be right up there with my favorites

Has to be Half-Life. It was so immersive...told such a great story, awesome game. Newer games like Far Cry, Doom 3...even though the graphics kicked ass on both...I was so sick of them at about midway point because of the lack of story, that it was a chore to finish them.

Can't wait for HL2 :D

Ultima VII: The Black Gate, Silver Seed, Serpent Isle

An RPG made by Origin before they sold the single-player community out to get into the MMORPG business.

Story wise it wasn't very different from the previous games; it still involved the monkey-like Guardian trying to take over Britannia. It was the gameplay that made this game great, I've still yet to find a game that matches VII's level of interactivity and immersion.

Doom
Deus Ex
Quake
Final Fantasy VII (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Secret of Mana

mainly old-school games, heh. I thoroughly enjoyed Doom 3 as well.

Definitely Soldier Of Fortune II

I logged more hours on this game than any other game. However, the Revolt Mod for Call Of Duty is just as fun....I've been playing this over everything else for the past month.

The game that started it all for me: Duke Nukem 3D

It was my first FPS and my first experience with online play....albeit only modem-to-modem at 28.8, but the idea of playing a buddy over the local phone lines blew my mind.

Then, along came Quake II and online multiplayer.....that ended my first marriage ;-)

Gumbo

anything that had a mechwarrior name in it

also doom and doom2...and DOOM3 KICKS ASS

oh and i LOVED UNREAL

hl was just overall boring...

i like alot of games...oh also i loved and hated Ultima online. played that fucking game for 7 years. just a couple months ago i quit. tired of all the fucking trammie carebears :D

i forgot one of the best RPG'S EVER...donno how i did..but i did...

FINAL FANTSY 7..............THE BEST..............

...the original UT and Q3Arena are two of my all time faves. Still play 'em both.

B.B.S.

Planescape: Torment

I'm rarely the first to post that in these threads.. Whats wrong with you people?

Gawd i loved Mechwarior II but that was with my desktop system and Thrustmaster Joystick, throttle, and rudder pedals...awesome game I was 1 with my mech and i loved designing them. Necesity later dictated a laptop and in those days usb controllers weren't an option so i put away my mechs and played a lot of Starcraft and Civ, depending on how much micro-management I wanted with my world domination. Later I got into RPG's and really liked Arcanum and Never Winters Night

Heavy Gear, my first online gaming experience.
You played Heavy Gear online? Me too. That game had it all. Great community, customization, co-op and pvp modes, an online "war", etc.

Single player was pretty good, too.

I've been playing PC games for so long that I can't really list one, so I'll make a short ranked list:

01. System Shock (the best game ever)
02. Ultima 8 (the game that got me into the Ultima series and still my favorite despite everyone else's opinions)
03. Quake 3 Arena (best pure shooter ever, perfect play balance, fast and simple)
04. System Shock 2 (most immersive "modern" game)
05. Ultima 7 Black Gate and Serpent Isle (with expansions)
06. Syndicate (best action strategy game ever)
07. Star Control 2
08. Al Qadim: The Genie's Curse (simple but immersive RPG)
09. Quest for Glory Series (spent countless hours with these on my XTs, 286s, and now I'm playing them again, these are the reason I originally bought a soundblaster (version 1.0)) :D
10. Leisure Suit Larry Series (silliest games)
11. Unreal (original in single player)
12. The rest of the Ultima series
13. The Omnicron Conspiracy (one of Epyx's last games, and a very cool futuristic action/adventur/RPG thingy)
14. Lucas Arts adventures (Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max, Indianna Jones, etc.)

I should start a favorite games of the C64 and Amiga eras too. :D

I used to play on MPlayer for clan XDC. We pretty much dominated dominated MPlayer and Heat.net. My first clan wars and man were they fun. Kali.net was where it was at though. Part of the 33rd Grassrunners.

Zork and Necromancer on my Atari 800XL

...is my age showing?

I played through most of zork in my office a few years ago, FWIW :)

Civ 1 or Civ3, I think. Possibly alpha centauri.
Transport tycoon has swallowed an immense number of hours, like Diablo 2.
Freespace 1&2 are just good. In the best possible way.

Starcraft?

Heatsinker: I'm actually in the middle of a game of Serpent Isle and Silver Seed right now. :D I beat The Black Gate last summer again, and now I'm just leaving Monitor in Serpent Isle. These games are incredible. Try http://exult.sourceforge.net if you haven't yet. It's a Windows engine for the original games. (You need to have the originals to use it.) It's so much better than when you had to free up base memory down to the byte to play these games. :D

A lot of people don't like Pagan, but the game oozes atmosphere. I thought it was amazing, and is still my favorite, followed by the 7 series. Ascension was good too, though I place that below all the 2D ones. I'm much more forgiving of the things they tried to do with these games though, than the average hardcore Ultima freak. Wish they could have finished Ascension the way it was supposed to be though. Stupid EA.

Single Player: mechwarrior II, the whole set and mercinaries, best game in my childhood, only problem was network play... was really lacking there.

Multiplayer: believe it or not, Command and Conquer Renegade, roomie bought it a couple of years back, and been playing it since, wicked online community, cheep purchase ($20 along with the rest of the c&c set) and doesn't require super hardware to run, I love this game. (Graphics could be more real, but who needs blood shooting out their monitor anyway)

PC games that have consumed a considerable amount of my life:

- The jaw-dropping (at the time) Doom 1
- Deus Ex 1
- Planescape: Torment (was there ever a better story in a game?)
- Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (not bad for free)

- The game that I've played more than any other is also free and has been around and developing for over 20 years. Your microwave oven probably has enough grunt to run it, but it's got more depth than anything else I've played. It takes effort to learn, and you might never be able to beat it, but once it's got the hooks in, there is no escape. Angband:
