Microsoft just updated their Wireless Display app to add Xbox support, meaning PC games can be streamed to an Xbox One. I do this with an Nvidia Shield TV currently but have tons of problems with it and have been looking for an alternative.

With this Wireless Display update being so new, I can't find any info on how it works. Specifically I'm looking to find out if it just mirrors your monitor and matches its resolution, 3440x1440 in my case, or if it will output my TVs resolution instead, 4K.

Anyone willing to take a few minutes to test this for me? It would be much appreciated.

Ended up buying an Xbox One S to test this myself only to find out that the desktop you are streaming from needs to have a wireless adapter. You know, that thing that 99% of gaming desktops don't have.

There's basically no mention of this requirement anywhere, but since the Wireless Display app utilizes Miracast and Miracast relies on having a wireless adapter (even if you aren't connected to a wireless network), it is in fact needed.

You could always add a wireless adapter to handle the streaming and leave the wired adapter for the Internet connection.

I think what he's saying is that Miracast works with a wired connection, but it won't let you stream if you don't have a wireless adapter present. There has to be a way to get around that silliness.

For what it's worth I used one of these for a long time and got superb connections speeds with it.

There is a new version out called the 6400m.

Both can be found for around $40 at other retailers right now. If you actually want to use it make sure you have a free USB 3.1 Gen 2 slot for it.

Actually I think it only does work over WiFi, not Ethernet. About all I can find on the thing is this Reddit thread and some of the posts conclude that it uses Miracast to stream directly from one wireless adapter to another.

I briefly looked for a USB adapter that said it officially supported Miracast and couldn't find any. Then, considering that it's wireless, even if it did allow me to stream in 4K from my PC, I don't think the experience would be very good. Rather than wasting more time and potentially money I just returned the Xbox and went back to the Shield TV. :(
